Abstract

This study aims at describing critical thinking subskills taught by Indonesian EFL teachers in academic writing and explaining how they taught the subskills. This qualitative study used two Indonesian EFL teachers who taught academic writing at one of state universities in Surabaya. Data were collected using observation checklist and field note. The obtained data were analyzed using interactive model analysis. Results showed that there were three out of forty critical thinking subskills that were not taught by the teachers namely providing and selecting the best examples, using credible sources, and maintaining the consistency of tenses choice. Another finding showed that there were seven ways of teaching critical thinking subskills namely individual consultation and feedback, class explanation, peer-feedback, groupwork of ideas construction and discussion, general class feedback, analysis task, and work review and discussion. This study suggests that EFL teachers can use the forty critical thinking subskills in teaching writing through one of the seven ways of teaching found.

Abstract

The current existence of AI is unstoppable. Many parties consider AI to be a serious threat to the world of education, including universities. The use of AI by students in doing tasks often causes anxiety among lecturers. There is concern that AI reduces students’ creativity in exploring their own ideas in making essays or designing learning materials (worksheets). One of the courses that require students to explore their creativity is ESP Material Development. In this course, students are required to learn to develop teaching materials in the form of worksheets in accordance with the needs analysis results identified in the ESP Program Design course. This research is designed to find out students' tendencies in using AI for developing ESP worksheet, while also finding out whether they think that AI chatbot is really useful for them so that they can yield an ESP worksheet whose activities are in accordance with the learning objectives and having an attractive and professional appearance in the same time. The methods used were questionnaires for and FGD with 40 ESP Material Development class students. It was found that most students tried to use AI chatbot for getting inspiration whenever they get stuck in finding more ideas for their worksheets. Most students admitted that AI helped them in that situation. However, they did not recommend the use of AI from the very beginning of developing worksheets. They confessed that using AI would cause confusion and reduce creativity when it is used since very beginning.

Abstract

Private English tutoring in Indonesia has become popular due to student demand. In practice, English private tutors mostly graduated from a linear academic background, whether in the English language and literature or education study program. English tutors who graduated from non-linear study programs have the same opportunity to teach English and perform their language-ability. This present study applied narrative inquiry to know how the private tutors’ academic background and learning journey outside formal education shaped their English proficiency. The participants of this study are four private English tutors; two tutors graduated from the English language and education, and the other two graduated from political science, who have been teaching for more than two years and achieved more than 500 scores in their TOEFL. The findings reveal that the tutors’ non-linear academic background and personal life experiences also helped how they could practice their communication skills using English.

Abstract

The popularity of video games among language learners makes games a potential medium for learning languages. Previous research shows that playing video games, one of which is DOTA 2, can have a positive effect on students' vocabulary acquisition, but it still does not explain what specific vocabulary learning strategies are used. This study explores DOTA 2 players' experiences in acquiring new knowledge and identifies effective strategies for acquiring knowledge in the context of the game. The research method used is a case study research design, as well as semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that DOTA 2 players learned new vocabulary through exposure while playing the game, and social interaction was the most emphasized comprehension learning strategy used by the participants. This study provides insight into the effectiveness of DOTA 2 as a language learning tool, especially regarding knowledge acquisition.

Abstract

Abstract. Metacognitive awareness has been recognized as a predictor of learning outcome, especially in tertiary level of education, and particularly in second and foreign language teaching and learning of writing. This component is crucial for EFL students whose first language is not English. In order to fulfill the demands of their own academic careers and future studies, there is a rising requirement for students to acquire more in-depth topic knowledge and to improve their text-analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation skills. However, few studies have been conducted to examine metacognitive awareness in relation to argumentative writing. This study reports a quantitative study that investigates the correlation between EFL students’ metacognitive awareness and argumentative writing performance. Data collected in this study include a questionnaire and argumentative writing scores. Participants were 30 EFL students at one of the universities in Indonesia. The findings reveal that students’ metacognitive awareness is at an intermediate level while it was statistically insignificant that a relationship between their metacognitive awareness and their argumentative writing performance. The results suggest urgent action from EFL teachers and stake-holders to seek a feasible solution to foster students’ implementation of their metacognitive awareness into their writing and other language skills. Keywords: Argumentative writing, correlational study, EFL students, metacognitive awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to explore postgraduate students' perceptions of the importance of Neuroeducation in English Language Teaching (ELT) and their awareness of its application. A mixed-methods approach was employed in this study. The study involved 30 postgraduate students from Master of Education programs at various universities. Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data, while open-ended interviews were conducted to gather qualitative data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the quantitative data and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The findings reveal that postgraduate students perceive understanding brain function as crucial in ELT. Regarding the awareness of Neuroeducation, participants highlighted the significance of accessible neuroscience resources, with the highest mean score (M = 4.87) for the need to make neuroscience information easily available to educators. The study concludes that postgraduate students recognize the importance of Neuroeducation in creating personalized and inclusive learning environments, though challenges remain, such as the need for formal training. Thus, Neuroeducation is considered an interdisciplinary field that can bring insights into how the brain learns the knowlegde into more effective and inclusive teaching stratgies, particularly in English language teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions, practices and reflections of pre-service English teacher towards peer assessment in Public Speaking course. This study not only focuses on students' perceptions, but also discusses how students practice this peer assessment and how they reflect on the implementation of this peer assessment. A basic interpretative study approach was used because it focuses on understanding the meaning individuals ascribe to their experiences. This approach allows researchers to explore the complexities of peer assessment from the participants' perspectives, rather than simply measuring outcomes. The participants in this study were 26 second-semester students from the 2023 intake of the English Language Education Program, who were enrolled in the Public Speaking course. There were three instruments needed to collect data, namely open-ended questionnaire, observation and peer assessment rubric. The findings reveal that most students positively perceive peer assessment as an effective tool for receiving feedback and improving their speaking skills. In practice, students utilized the rubric to evaluate their peers, providing scores, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and presenting feedback. Reflecting on these experiences, some students suggested that the peer assessment rubric could be simplified to enhance clarity and better align with the course objectives.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) has been widely implemented in language learning. However, no research has been conducted on its use with linguistic landscape (LL) as a pedagogical tool in primary schools. This study was therefore conducted to look into the use of PjBL with LL for language practices and values in primary school. The purpose is to analyse the kinds of PjBL incorporating LL conducted, the teaching procedures implemented, the competencies and values promoted, and teachers’ opinions about its use for primary school. The study used a mixed-methods design that relied heavily on qualitative description and was supplemented with quantitative analysis. The study was conducted at a primary school, which was selected using the purposive sampling technique. Six teachers, six experts and students of grades 4, 5, and 6 teachers were involved. The amount of 520 LL was collected during the year 2022 using direct observation, questionnaire, interviews, and document study analysis. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show that PjBL of various kinds (PLS projects, legacy students’ projects, event-based and annual projects) has been incorporated into LL for language instruction. The teacher needs to prepare, introduce the concept of LL, allow students to observe and analyze the tasks, have discussions, design and creation, presentation and display, and reflection as the teaching procedure.  Multifaceted competence and values are promoted. The teachers and experts have positive opinions about it. The study implied that PjBL with LL is very beneficial for language practices and character values.

Abstract

When the goals in teaching pronunciation are that students attain “near-native” and “socially acceptable” pronunciation, and are assessed with a valid and reliable instrument using the Praat device and human interpretation raters, a new way to assess pronunciation skills is needed. This article proposes such a new way. Through suprasegmental identity (rhythm), English teachers’ pronunciation skill (E-TPS) will be correctly assessed. Using Praat as a device and human raters for interpretation to assess E-TPS stands on several premises. First, the measures of pronunciation constructs should be valid and reliable. Second, the role of raters in English pronunciation assessment presents unique challenges in drawing valid inferences from performance, in scoring assignments, in making decisions for which a pronunciation assessment was intended, to the pedagogical and social consequences beyond, and to connect concerns in giving judgments. Third, the raters should have familiarity with both accent and content. Fourth, a suprasegmental (stress, rhythm, and intonation) approach is an important complement to segmental teaching. Fifth, rhythm plays a big role and is defined as a “continuum” of functions and effects in pronunciation assessment. Sixth, the trend among the technology-minded for testing using automated assessment of pronunciation has as its goal accuracy in imitating native speakers, as is reflected in the use of Praat as a device. Therefore, the blending approach (Praat and raters) represents the future in assessing E-TPS.
