Abstract

Globalization has boosted economic growth, making shipping the most vital mode of transportation and highlighting the need for competent, English-speaking seafarers. So, maritime academy students must be proficient in oral Maritime English (ME) to ensure clear communication and prevent mishaps. This study explored the roles of Artificial Intelligence (AI)  towards the communication strategies used by students. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected through speaking activity observations and semi-structured interviews. Before using AI, students relied on strategies like topic avoidance, message abandonment, approximation, code-switching, and stalling. After AI integration, more effective strategies emerged, such as approximation, clarification-seeking, stalling, and self-correction. The roles of AI towards students’ communication strategy were helping them to avoid literal translation, rely less on others, eliminate message abandonment, and reduce stalling, leading to improved fluency, independence, and professional communication in maritime contexts.

Abstract

Since English has become a professional and communication language in various domains in Indonesia, it is necessary to take into consideration a variety of English used in specific domains, which is called English for Specific Purposes (ESP). To accommodate the instructional material, ELT textbooks have a vital role due to their authority to strengthen teachers’ identity. By employing critical discourse analysis (CDA), teachers can critically evaluate ESP textbooks to ensure they are not just linguistically correct but also culturally sensitive, professionally relevant, and ideologically sound, thereby improving the overall efficacy of ESP instruction. Thus, it is believed that ESP textbook evaluation using CDA is an important thing to do. This article aims at promoting CDA to evaluate textbooks especially ESP. This approach fosters continuous improvement in teaching practices and curriculum development, ultimately enhancing the educational experience for learners in specialized fields. This paper provides the readers with detail explanations about the importance of textbook evaluation, the basic concepts of CDA, the roles of CDA in evaluating ESP textbooks and steps in evaluating ESP textbooks using CDA. In this paper, suggestions and recommendations are also offered to the ESP teachers, students, stakeholders, policymakers, and curriculum developers to use CDA to evaluate ESP textbooks.

Abstract

Environment is currently of concern to the general public. One concerning case is what occurred at the Shidiqiyyah Islamic Boarding School, Jombang. This case has been widely reported by the media in Indonesia, including the online media Kompas.com, starting from the alleged case until it reached the stage of the sentencing hearing. This research examines five news stories from the online media Kompas.com regarding reporting on verdicts in cases of sexual violence at the Shiddiqiyyah Islamic boarding school, Jomban. The aim and formulation of the problem in this research is: How does the online media Kompas.com use framing structures (syntax, script, thematic, rhetorical). This research uses a qualitative approach by collecting data using non-participant observation and documentation. The data analysis technique uses Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki's framing analysis model with four structures: syntax, script, thematic, and rhetorical. The results of this research are (1). Syntactic Structure, Kompas.com media tries to show the events after the sentence was handed down to the perpetrator of sexual violence. (2). Kompas.com's media script structure tries to frame the facts and efforts of the victim while fighting for justice for the victim. (3). The thematic structure of the Kompas.com media shows that the verdict handed down did not match the victim's expectations. (4). Rhetorical structure, in Kompas.com media reporting, is seen using elements of the lexicon, this shows the emphasis in each news.

Abstract

Reading habits are widely recognized as a key factor influencing students’ academic success, while socioeconomic background has often been associated with disparities in educational outcomes. However, limited research in the Indonesian EFL context has examined whether socioeconomic background moderates the effect of reading habits on academic achievement. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with moderation analysis to explore the relationship between reading habits, socioeconomic background, and English achievement among 155 twelfth-grade students at a private senior high school in Surabaya. Data were collected through questionnaires on reading habits and socioeconomic indicators, complemented by documentation of students’ final English scores. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, multiple regression, and moderation testing. The findings showed that students’ reading habits were generally moderate, dominated by digital reading through social media, while academic reading remained limited. A significant positive correlation was found between reading habits and English achievement, indicating that stronger engagement with reading led to better performance. Socioeconomic background was positively associated with reading habits but did not directly predict academic achievement. Moreover, the moderation analysis revealed that socioeconomic background did not alter the relationship between reading habits and achievement. The study concludes that reading habits are a consistent and universal predictor of English academic achievement, regardless of socioeconomic differences. These results highlight the importance of fostering purposeful and sustained reading practices as a strategy to support equitable educational outcomes in Indonesia.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) are already a trend in educational sector. The concepts of HOTS are applied in statements of ‘basic competences’ (as known as KD) in the 2013 English Curriculum (syllabus). The purpose of stating HOTS concepts in ‘KD’ to make all of the process of teaching and learning resulted on the students’ ability to be able to think and practice higher order thinking skills in their daily life. As represented in the ‘basic competences’ (KD) of 2013 English curriculum (syllabus revised edition), HOTS can be considered as the significant point in developing indicator (as the objective) of teaching and learning. The development of indicators should be in line with the theory of HOTS, from analyzing, evaluating and creating (based on the revised Bloom taxonomy). However, there are a lot of English teachers who still get difficulties in developing appropriate teaching learning indicators in fulfilling HOTS concepts. In national practice, the policy of implementing HOTS as the basic competences may not be carried out fully by the Indonesian English teachers. There is also a tendency to ignore the discussion of developing appropriate indicator achievement as the learning objectives. HIGHLIGHTS: Curriculum developers should comprehend the concepts of the curriculum and the language theories applied to the curriculum. Basic competence should be developed following the level of Bloom's cognitive skills, particularly to generate students' higher-order thinking. Implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as a policy in the 2013 English Curriculum Basic Competencies (KD) and English teachers' practices in developing competency achievement indicators

Abstract

A qualitative study has been conducted to explore and encourage Indonesian EFL teachers’ professional well-being using positive psychology. It used thematic analysis approach to scrutinize participants’ well-being and their perception of PP toward their teaching practices during the covid 19 outbreak. By having 4 participants, CATI (Computer Assisted-telephone Interview) was administered to do a semi structured interview since the mobilization was still low during the pandemic. The analyses disclosed that the 5 pillar components of PP or known as PERMA, namely, positive and negative emotions, engagement, relationship, meaningfulness, and achievement were found in participants’ responses to flourish their professional well-being. The results highlight that some elements of PERMA such as accomplishments and meaningfulness are not obtained yet since the participants are still in the process of achieving their most significant goals in their teaching career. Nevertheless, the other three elements, namely, positive emotion, engagement and relationship depicted clearly that all of them are stronger predictors in fulfilling their professional well being. Moreover, the distinctive learning environment, years of teaching, institutional policies and participants’ L1 did not show significant differences on how participants nurture their professional well-being. Thus, it is underlined that an EFL teacher’s professional well-being is not only acknowledged as a personal and subjective occurrence, but it is also influenced by collective and social phenomena in the EFL teacher’s teaching environment. Implications and profound understandings were discussed in this study. HIGHLIGHTS: The analyses disclosed that the 5 pillar components of PP or known as PERMA, namely, positive and negative emotions, engagement, relationship, meaningfulness, and achievement were found in participants’ responses which flourish their professional well-being. The distinctive learning environment, years of teaching, institutional policies and participants’ L1 did not show significant differences on how participants nurture their professional well-being. Higher professional well-being of an educator can contribute to greater work performance by providing teachers with a sense of purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their work.

Abstract

Socratic questioning, rooted in classical philosophy, remains a cornerstone of critical thinking and reflective learning. However, its traditional application requires adaptation to align with the demands of 21st-century education, which prioritizes technology integration, collaboration, and real-world relevance. This article introduces Socratic Questioning 2.0, a reimagined framework that merges classical inquiry techniques with digital tools and student-centered methodologies. By fostering deep learning, this modern approach enhances students' critical thinking, creativity, and engagement. The study explores the theoretical foundation of Socratic questioning, identifies its limitations in modern contexts, and proposes practical innovations to address these challenges. Key characteristics, such as the integration of digital platforms, contextualized questioning, and collaborative engagement, are highlighted alongside implementation procedures that include teacher training and adaptive technologies. Empirical evidence supports the effectiveness of this approach in developing critical skills essential for lifelong learning. By redefining Socratic questioning, this framework equips educators and learners to navigate the complexities of contemporary education. This study particularly examines the implementation of Socratic Questioning 2.0 in English language teaching contexts, where traditional methods often fall short in developing critical thinking and language proficiency simultaneously. The research demonstrates how this modernized approach effectively addresses the unique challenges of language acquisition while fostering deeper learning outcomes.
