Abstract

Fish production in Indonesia is increasing, but the main obstacle that can hinder the continuity of the cultivation process is disease attacks. Antibiotics are ingredients commonly used to treat fish diseases. However, antibiotics can have negative effects, so other alternatives are needed to overcome this problem. The use of prebiotics in Indonesia still comes from abroad, whereas Indonesia has many ingredients that can be developed into prebiotics. This research aims to identify and select local prebiotic sources that have the potential to meet scientific criteria as probiotics. The research method was carried out in vitro to determine the glucose, maltose, and fructose content in purple sweet potato, banana stem, cream sweet potato, yam tuber and yellow sweet potato. The highest maltose content is produced by purple sweet potatoes (2.61%), fructose content is produced by yellow sweet potatoes (1.80%), and glucose content is produced by creamy sweet potatoes (2.15%). The results of this study need to be further developed into probiotics that can be used to support sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract

Plankton plays a crucial role in pond ecosystems as primary producers, regulators of water quality, and indicators of trophic status. This study aims to examine the relationship between phytoplankton dominance and water quality, growth, and survival of Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in intensive commercial pond culture systems, as a basis for ecosystem-based plankton management. The study was conducted in three commercial shrimp ponds at PT Bagja Barokah Sarerea, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java, during one production cycle. Observed parameters included plankton community structure and dominance, water quality variables (temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, transparency, COD, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), absolute weight gain, daily growth rate, and shrimp survival. Plankton dominance was analyzed using Simpson’s dominance index, while relationships among variables were assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that the phytoplankton community was predominantly composed of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta, with different dominance patterns among ponds. Phytoplankton density exhibited a strong and significant positive correlation with shrimp absolute weight gain across all ponds (p<0.01). In contrast, the relationship between phytoplankton density and daily growth rate varied among ponds, reflecting differences in water quality stability and organic matter accumulation. Shrimp survival rates were relatively high (81.55–97.09%), with the best performance observed in ponds characterized by balanced plankton composition and stable water quality. This study concludes that well-managed plankton dominance plays a key role in enhancing shrimp growth and survival, highlighting the importance of ecosystem-based pond management to improve productivity and sustainability in intensive shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract

Graphical Abstract  Highlight Research Paraprobiotic for intestinal health of shrimp. Growth performance and immune system increase during administration of paraprobiotics. Microencapsulation for making paraprobiotics. Pathogen inhibition by paraprobiotics.   Abstract Vibriosis, caused by Vibrio spp., is a major threat in shrimp aquaculture, leading to high mortality and economic losses. Probiotics and prebiotics are promising preventive strategies to enhance host immunity and feed efficiency. This study aimed to determine the optimal dose of para-probiotic Pseudoalteromonas piscicida (1Ub) microcapsules and their combination with the prebiotic mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) to improve growth performance and immune responses of Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). The experiment was conducted at the College of Vocational Studies, IPB University, using mysis 2 (M2) larvae reared in 60 × 30 × 35 cm³ aquarium for two weeks until post-larvae stage 10 (PL10). Shrimp were fed synbiotic microcapsules (1% para-probiotic and 12 mg/L MOS) via bioencapsulated Artemia sp. Five groups were tested: K− (control, PBS immersion), K+ (challenged with Vibrio harveyi), A (0.5% synbiotic), B (1.0%), and C (2.0%). After 14 days, groups K+, A, B, and C were challenged with 10⁶ CFU/mL V. harveyi for seven days. Although differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05), group A consistently showed better outcomes, including higher survival rate, final body length, total haemocyte count, respiratory burst, and phenoloxidase activity, along with lower Vibrio counts compared to K+. These trends indicate that synbiotic application, particularly at 0.5%, can enhance shrimp health and resilience. This study highlights synbiotics as a practical strategy to improve survival, growth, and disease resistance in larviculture.

Abstract

Abstract

The aquaculture sector frequently encounters disease problems, both infectious and non-infectious. Infectious diseases in fish can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, all of which can reduce productivity and threaten the sustainability of aquaculture operations. This study aimed to determine the distribution and types of pathogenic bacteria infecting common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and to analyze the prevalence of these pathogens in common carp farming centers located in Pabuaran and Salam Jaya Villages, Pabuaran District, Subang Regency, West Java. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling technique at four observation stations. Bacterial isolation was conducted from kidney and lesion tissues using Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), followed by identification based on colony morphology, Gram reaction, and biochemical tests including catalase, oxidase, TSIA, MIO, O/F, and glucose fermentation tests. The results showed that in Pabuaran Village, Station 1 contained three types of pathogenic bacteria: Aeromonas sp. (87%), Pseudomonas sp. (6.7%), and Enterobacter sp. (6.7%), while Station 2 contained two types: Aeromonas sp. (93%) and Pseudomonas sp. (7%). In Salam Jaya Village, Station 1 contained Aeromonas sp. (87%) and Pseudomonas sp. (13%), while Station 2 contained Aeromonas sp. (87%) and Enterobacter sp. (13%). Overall, Aeromonas sp. was identified as the dominant pathogenic bacterium infecting common carp in both study locations.
