Abstract

The lack of numeracy skills for elementary school students shows the urgency for innovative learning media that can provide math learning experiences that are relevant to real life. This study aims to develop and evaluate a digital mathematics comic based on the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach as a learning media for elementary school students. Using the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation, this study integrates real contexts, visual storylines, and interactive activities into digital media that can be accessed through various devices. The validation results from three media experts with seven aspects and 17 indicators showed that the digital comic was in the highly valid category (80-100%). The comic was also considered practical and effective by teachers and students in helping them understand mathematical concepts through contextual situations. Responses from media experts, teachers, and students mentioned that the storyline was relevant to everyday life, easy to use, interesting, and supported active student engagement. This research has implications for integrating the RME approach into digital comic media, which can transform abstract mathematics learning into a fun, meaningful, and student-centred experience, in line with the demands of 21st-century education.

Abstract

Matematics learning in elementary school is often seen as difficult and not interesting, which makes students lose their interest and enthusiasm for studying. The same situation also happens in class IV at SDN 46 Banda Aceh, where students appear to be less active, not enthusiastic, and not interested during math lessons. One way to deal with this problem is by using interactive and engaging learning tools, such as the Baamboozle game. Media Baamboozle is a learning tool that uses games, helping students to be more engaged and interested in learning in a fun way. This study uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design in the form of a single-group model, which includes pre-testing and post-testing. The population and sample in this research are all the fourth-grade students at SDN 46 Banda Aceh, totaling 28 students. Data collection techniques involved using survey sheets about students' interests and learning motivation that were given before and after the use of the media, along with direct observations and documentation records. The data analysis was done using descriptive statistical methods, normality testing with the Shapiro-Wilk method, paired comparison testing with the t-test, and measurement of ability improvement using the N-Gain method.

Abstract

Mathematics learning poverty remains a pressing challenge in Indonesia, where a substantial proportion of students fail to attain curriculum-level conceptual understanding. Although national and international large-scale assessments have documented the scope of this problem, comparatively little research has examined how mathematics learning poverty manifests at the classroom level in terms of students’ conceptual thinking, instructional practices, and teachers’ professional learning needs. Addressing this gap, the present study conducts a classroom-based needs analysis to investigate mathematics learning poverty and to explore how a school–university partnership mediated through lesson study (SUPER-LS), informed by principles of slow pedagogy, may offer a context-sensitive response. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through diagnostic assessments administered to 336 Grade 8 students, while qualitative data were obtained from structured observations of 12 mathematics lessons and semi-structured interviews with six mathematics teachers. Quantitative results indicate substantial conceptual deficits (M = 32.57 out of 100, SD = 17.45), particularly in fractions and algebraic expressions. Analysis of student responses reveals systematic misconceptions and fragile conceptual understanding rather than random error. Classroom observations further show predominantly teacher-centered and fast-paced instructional practices, with limited opportunities for student questioning, reasoning, and reflective engagement. Teacher interviews highlight a strong commitment to improving student understanding, alongside constraints related to instructional time, workload, and examination pressures. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that mathematics learning poverty emerges from the interaction of student-level misconceptions, instructional practices, and structural conditions. The study provides an empirical foundation for designing diagnostic-informed professional learning. Within this context, SUPER-LS and slow pedagogy function as context-responsive frameworks to support deeper mathematical learning, collaborative teacher inquiry, and more reflective instructional practices aimed at mitigating mathematics learning poverty.

Abstract

Kedua, Hasil uji normalitas menunjukkan data berdistribusi normal (Sig. > 0,05). Ketiga, Uji Paired Sample t-test memperoleh nilai Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,000 < 0,05 dan nilai t-hitung 146,399 > t-tabel 2,060 (df = 25), sehingga hipotesis alternatif diterima. Artinya implementasi penggunaan model pembelajaran berbasis Project Based Learning dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa kelas VI pada materi simetri di sekolah dasar.
