Abstract

Light pollution has become an urgent environmental concern that reduces access to naturally dark skies and contributes to ecological amnesia, the fading of direct connections with the natural world. This study examines how first-time encounters with an unpolluted night sky through astrotourism evoke emotional responses that foster ecological awareness. The research used an interpretative phenomenological approach with ten novice participants who shared their initial experiences in dark-sky environments. The findings reveal affective responses of awe, wonder, existential reflection, and intergenerational concern. These responses transformed passive observation into embodied engagement with the cosmos. Within the framework of emotional geography, the night sky is conceptualized as an affective landscape that restores ecological intimacy and supports environmental reflection. The study positions astrotourism as more than recreation and highlights its potential as an affective pedagogy in environmental education and as a pathway for sustainable tourism. The novelty of this study lies in framing astrotourism as an affective bridge between emotional geography and environmental education.

Abstract

Rural tourism sustainability relies heavily on community competence, yet significant skill gaps among residents remain a critical barrier. This study aims to systematically synthesize the role and models of Non-Formal Education (NFE) in developing tourism village potential. Employing a Scoping Review methodology, twenty-one (21) articles published between 2016 and 2025 were analyzed based on specific inclusion criteria regarding NFE in rural contexts. The review identifies three dominant NFE intervention models: (1) Economic Empowerment (vocational training), (2) Socio-Cultural Preservation (heritage education), and (3) Institutional Capacity Building (governance strengthening). These interventions are proven to essentially transform passive residents into skilled tourism actors. However, this study is limited to academic literature and may exclude practical insights from non-published field reports. Consequently, it is recommended that stakeholders integrate standardized NFE curricula into village policy to ensure consistent human resource development.

Abstract

This study examines the digital destination image of Madakaripura Waterfall by analyzing tourist sentiments expressed in Google Review posts from January 2024 to November 2025. The research is motivated by unique governance issues, particularly the period of temporary closure declared by the local government while on-site operations continued, which triggered diverse tourist responses on digital platforms. The analysis was conducted using the Naïve Bayes sentiment classification algorithm, word cloud visualization, word frequency analysis, and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that positive sentiment dominates (69.44%), primarily driven by appreciation for the natural beauty, scenic landscape, and the unique “eternal rain” phenomenon. Neutral sentiment (8.18%) mainly consists of factual descriptions related to environmental conditions, accessibility, and practical visitor information. Meanwhile, negative sentiment (22.38%) is largely influenced by governance-related issues, including the forced use of local guides, unclear pricing systems, and uncomfortable interactions with local stakeholders. These governance and service-quality issues are identified as the main threats to the destination’s digital image. The study proposes several strategic recommendations, including strengthening community-based tourism (CBT), implementing transparent and standardized pricing, enhancing capacity building for local guides, and optimizing social media–based visitor feedback mechanisms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of tourist behavior in mountain hiking activities in the Sindoro, Sumbing, and Slamet (3S) area of Central Java within the context of nature-based tourism trends and digital mediation. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving eight purposively selected hikers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and analysis of social media posts. The findings reveal a shift in motivation from physical challenge-oriented goals toward self-fulfillment, personal reflection, and psychological balance. Mountain hiking has also become normalized as part of an urban modern lifestyle. Furthermore, social media plays a significant role in shaping aspirations, documentation practices, and the reproduction of tourist behavior, extending the experience of nature beyond physical engagement into digital representation. These findings indicate that contemporary tourist behavior is constructed through the interaction of intrinsic motivation, social needs, and the logic of digital representation in nature-based tourism.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the authenticity and intellectual capacity of Jacobus Rudolph Razoux Kühr (1882–1958) within the sociopolitical context of the Dutch East Indies from 1911 to 1918. It analyses his writings across four newspapers: Sin Po, Pertimbangan, De Indiër, and Perniagaan. Grounded in the premise that the colonial press functioned as a platform for ideological contestation rather than a neutral conduit, the study conceptualizes authenticity as Razoux Kühr’s reflexive awareness of his positionality as an Indo-European intellectual situated between colonial authority and Indonesian society. Furthermore, intellectuality is defined as his capacity to articulate rational critiques of colonial power relations through journalistic discourse. Methodologically, the research integrates historical methods with Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis to explore the interaction between micro-level textual strategies, social cognition, and macro-level colonial structures. The findings demonstrate that Razoux Kühr consistently advocated a liberal ideological stance that was adaptable to various editorial and sociopolitical contexts, including pluralistic engagement with Chinese nationalism, public moral critiques of colonial legitimacy, and intra-press polemics. This article contributes to Indonesian colonial historiography by illustrating how discourse analysis of the press can reveal the dynamic development of intellectual agency within the liminal social position of Indo-European actors in late-colonial society.
