Abstract

Attention span is a person’s ability to focus on a piece of information without being distracted for a certain period of time. This study aims to examine the learning strategies employed by university students to adress the decline in their attention span resulting from the use of TikTok and Reels. Using a literature study approach, data were collected from scientific journal articles and official websites discussing the use of short-form videos, attention apan among university students, and reccomended strategies for addressing attention span issues. The results of the study indicate that excessive consumption of short-form videos such as Tiktok and Reels can lead to a reduction in attention span, cognitive decline, and academic performance amongst students. Therefore, learning strategies such as setting learning goals and maintaining motivation, managing time through screen time management, using the pomodoro technique, and fostering concentration can be adopted by university students to adress issues with their attention span.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of social media on adolescents’ social lives, especially its effects on friendship quality, social connectedness, face-to-face interaction, identity development, and peer pressure. Social media platforms have become daily communication spaces where adolescents maintain relationships, seek support, express themselves, and join wider communities. This article uses a descriptive qualitative literature review by synthesizing ten publications and official reports issued between 2021 and 2025. The selected sources include longitudinal studies, ecological momentary assessments, correlational research, qualitative studies, and systematic reviews. The findings show that social media does not produce a single uniform effect. Active and purposeful communication can strengthen existing friendships, provide emotional support, expand social networks, and help adolescents explore identity. In contrast, passive browsing, excessive use, social comparison, continuous peer monitoring, and pressure to remain constantly connected can reduce perceived connectedness, increase loneliness, intensify interpersonal conflict, and encourage problematic use. Offline friendship quality remains a strong protective factor. The impact also differs according to gender, self-esteem, self-concept clarity, peer susceptibility, motives for use, and the type of platform activity. The study concludes that adolescents need balanced digital habits, critical media literacy, clear interpersonal boundaries, and continued face-to-face interaction, Families and schools should guide social media use without ignoring its role as a legitimate social environment for adolescents.

Abstract

The low learning outcomes in Social Studies (IPS) at SMP Negeri 14 Jakarta, particularly in class VII B which recorded the lowest average score among all seventh-grade classes, indicate the need for more effective instructional media innovation. This study aims to examine the implementation of digital pop-up book learning media in improving the Social Studies learning outcomes of class VII-B students at SMP Negeri 14 Jakarta. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of two cycles covering the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects comprised 34 students from class VII-B, selected based on having the lowest average score among all seventh-grade classes. The results show that the implementation of digital pop-up book learning media significantly improved both student learning outcomes and engagement, as evidenced by an increase in the achievement of Learning Outcome Indicators (IPH) from 70% in cycle 1 to 85% in cycle 2, as well as an increase in the average student engagement rate from 49% in cycle 1 to 82% in cycle 2. These findings demonstrate that digital pop-up book media is effective in improving Social Studies learning outcomes while also encouraging students' active participation in the learning process.
