Abstract

The ecological crisis faced by humanity today reflects a moral and spiritual failure in preserving nature. The main objective of this study is to examine environmental preservation from the perspective of the Qur'an using a thematic interpretation approach (tafsir maudhu'i). Through the exploration of verses related to nature, this study identifies a number of key concepts such as amanah (trust), khalifah (human leadership), mizan (balance), and the prohibition of facade (damage). The Qur'an firmly positions humans as guardians of the earth who carry ethical and religious responsibilities for preserving nature. The findings of this study reveal that caring for nature is not merely an ethical obligation, but also part of worship and a form of devotion to God. The resulting Qur'anic ecological ethics can be used as a normative basis for the development of environmental education, da'wah activities, and the formulation of public policies based on Islamic values. This study also emphasizes the importance of integrating the values of revelation in facing global environmental challenges wisely and sustainably.

Abstract

In the modern era, approaches to understanding hadith have undergone significant transformations, necessitating more systematic and contextualized methodologies. Thematic hadith studies (mawḍū‘ī) have emerged as a methodological solution capable of integrating the Prophet’s teachings with contemporary realities in a more comprehensive manner. This research aims to examine the concept, history, and development of the thematic methodology in hadith studies. The primary focus is to explore the epistemology of this approach and its implications within modern Islamic academic discourse. This study employs a qualitative method using a library research approach. Data were collected through the analysis of primary and secondary literature, then analyzed using descriptive-analytical and historical-critical methods. The findings indicate that while the thematic method has existed since the classical era, its conceptual maturity has advanced significantly in the contemporary period. This approach has proven effective in addressing the issue of ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth, clarifying inter-narration relationships, and expanding the scope of hadith understanding according to the needs of the time. However, its main challenges include potential subjectivity in interpretation and the need for stricter methodologies in validating both sanad and matn. Therefore, thematic hadith studies serve as a bridge between classical understanding and modern academic demands. Its implications extend beyond the development of hadith science to the continued relevance of Islamic teachings in addressing contemporary intellectual and social challenges.

Abstract

The development of modern Muslim fashion has significantly transformed the way Muslims express their identity, especially in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population. However, the growing popularity of “modest wear” fashion does not always align with Islamic principles as taught in the Hadiths. This study aims to explore the Islamic dress code based on thematic Hadith analysis (maudhū’ī), identify core dressing principles in Islam, and evaluate their implementation within the modern Muslim fashion culture. This research applies a qualitative method through library research, employing the thematic approach to collect and analyze Prophetic traditions related to clothing. The findings reveal that Islamic principles of dress include covering the ‘awrah (private parts), avoiding excessive adornment (tabarruj), refraining from imitating the opposite gender or non-Muslim cultures, and upholding modesty and dignity. These hadiths offer ethical guidance that is not only normative but also practical in the modern socio-cultural context. The study concludes that modern Muslim fashion can serve as an effective medium for visual da'wah if it remains aligned with Hadith-based values. The synergy between religious principles and creative design can form a relevant and dignified Islamic lifestyle rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad saw.

Abstract

This study investigates patterns of legal non-compliance in Islamic inheritance practices among rural Muslim communities in Petir District, Serang Regency, Indonesia, where the doctrinal authority of Farā’iḏ is often subordinated to customary logic and familial consensus. In many such settings, inheritance is distributed through informal arrangements that deviate from scriptural mandates, raising concerns about the erosion of Islamic legal norms and the role of religious figures in mediating these tensions. The research focuses on understanding the underlying drivers of this legal disobedience and analyzing how religious leaders respond to and interpret such practices within the community. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study draws on interviews and participant observation in two villages (Kubang Jaya and Kadugenep) and applies Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and Black’s theory of legal behavior to interpret the findings. The results show non-compliance is driven by strong customary expectations, gendered family roles, limited legal literacy, and practical constraints that hinder formal legal access. This study argues that these practices are not merely accidental or ignorant deviations but socially embedded responses to structural and normative dissonance. Religious leaders exhibit varied responses, ranging from strict textualism to pragmatic contextualization, often opting for ethical accommodation over legal enforcement. The study argues that inheritance’s legal disobedience reflects systemic social rationalities and negotiated religious authority. It contributes to ongoing discussions on Islamic legal pluralism by revealing how Farā’iḏ is accepted but selectively reconfigured to align with local moral economies and offers insight into strengthening legal literacy, religious guidance, and institutional responsiveness in Muslim-majority contexts.

Abstract

Andragogy, defined as the art and science of teaching adults, is an educational approach that emphasizes learner autonomy, experience, needs, and motivation. In the practice of Islamic education, the educator (teacher) becomes one of the key components in effectively applying these principles. The perspective of hadith highlights that lifelong learning and the appreciation of life experience are integral parts of Islamic education. This study aims to explain the concept of adult education based on hadiths and to explore the andragogical principles that can be applied within Islamic educational practice. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis of relevant hadiths. The findings reveal that adult learning in Islam prioritizes an experience-based approach, addresses the actual needs of learners, and builds internal motivation to learn. Furthermore, the importance of patience, respect for experience, and effective communication are essential factors for success in educating adults, whose cognitive processes differ from those of children. This study develops the concept of "prophetic andragogy" as a model of transformative education grounded in prophetic values.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed economic transaction systems, including the widespread use of non-cash payment methods such as e-wallets, mobile banking, and QR codes. This article aims to examine the phenomenon of non-cash transactions from the perspective of the Prophet Muhammad’s hadiths, focusing on the integration between digital innovation and Islamic legal principles. The study employs a qualitative method with a thematic approach to hadiths related to justice, honesty, the prohibition of gharar (ambiguity), riba (usury), and trustworthiness in financial dealings. The findings reveal that although non-cash transactions are not explicitly addressed in classical hadith literature, the ethical values contained in the hadiths provide a normative framework relevant to assessing the legitimacy and appropriateness of modern digital financial systems. When understood contextually, non-cash transactions can be accepted in Islam as long as they uphold transparency, fairness, and avoid prohibited elements. This article underscores the importance of applying the maq??id al-shar?‘ah approach to evaluating modern economic innovations in order to maintain harmony between technological development and Islamic values.

Abstract

The phenomenon of filial crisis—the weakening of children's respect, care, and responsibility toward their parents—has emerged as a significant moral and social challenge in the modern era. This crisis is driven by shifting cultural values, the rise of individualism, and the disruption of traditional family roles in contemporary society. This article aims to analyze the phenomenon from the perspective of the Prophet Muhammad’s hadiths using a thematic and contextual approach. Hadiths addressing filial piety (birr al-w?lidayn), prohibitions against disobedience, and encouragement to honor and care for elderly parents are examined in light of today’s social realities. The study finds that these hadiths emphasize not only ethical norms—both vertical (relationship with God) and horizontal (social relationships)—but also provide a spiritual foundation for preserving family harmony. By recontextualizing these prophetic values, Islam offers both normative and practical solutions to address the filial crisis. This study recommends integrating hadith-based values into character education curricula and reinforcing family-based social systems.

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between human actions and the threat of hellfire punishment from the perspective of the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Using a thematic (maw??‘?) approach, this research explores authentic Hadiths that explicitly describe various reprehensible acts and the corresponding forms of hellish punishment warned as their consequences. The study employs the method of takhrij to verify the authenticity of the chains of transmission (sanad), followed by matan analysis to uncover the ethical messages and spiritual dimensions embedded within. Findings indicate that the majority of hellfire threats are rooted in violations of the rights of fellow humans (?uq?q al-‘ib?d)—such as lying, corruption, injustice, and other social transgressions—rather than ritual violations. This article emphasizes that the eschatological understanding in Hadiths is not merely dogmatic, but serves as a moral character-building mechanism.

Abstract

This study examines social ecology from the perspective of hadith science (‘ulum al-hadith), with the aim of exploring the environmental and social values contained in prophetic hadiths. The main focus of this study is the methodological analysis of hadiths related to ecological issues, such as environmental conservation, social justice, and natural resource management. This study uses a hadith criticism approach, namely by examining aspects of authenticity through analysis of sanad (chain of narrators), criticism of matan (the content of the hadith), and contextual and semantic interpretation of hadiths relevant to environmental themes. In this study, the hadiths analyzed were selectively selected based on their relevance to the principles of Islamic social ecology. The analysis process was carried out thoroughly to assess the validity of the hadith and understand its meaning and normative objectives. This approach integrates classical evaluation methods of hadith science with a contemporary ethical perspective, resulting in a comprehensive framework for formulating hadith-based environmental ethics. Research findings indicate that many authentic hadiths contain strong social ecological principles, such as the concept of caliphate (human leadership over the earth), mizan (balance), and distributive justice. These values emphasize the importance of human responsibility in preserving nature and creating harmony between humans and their environment. These hadiths also demonstrate the close relationship between the spiritual dimension and socio-ecological responsibility. This study makes a significant contribution to the development of hadith-based Islamic environmental jurisprudence. With a methodological and academic approach, this study enriches understanding of Islamic ecological ethics and opens up opportunities for integrating religious values into just and sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively examine the concept of gratitude (shukr) from the perspective of the Qur'an by employing a thematic interpretation approach ( tafsīr al-maw ḍ ū'ī ) combined with the grounded theory method. This dual approach allows for an in-depth exploration of Qur'anic verses related to gratitude while also constructing theoretical frameworks derived directly from the primary data—namely, the Qur'anic text itself. The research adopts a qualitative, library-based methodology, where relevant verses are collected, categorized, and regularly analyzed to understand how gratitude is depicted, what forms it takes, and how it influences human life. The findings reveal that gratitude in the Qur'an goes beyond verbal expressions of gratitude to God. It encompasses inner awareness, acknowledgment of divine favor, wise utilization of blessings, and concrete actions that reflect obedience to God. Gratitude is presented as an active response to divine grace, resulting in positive behavior, spiritual closeness, and the strengthening of ethical and social dimensions in a believer's life. Moreover, the Qur'an affirms that those who are grateful are not only spiritually elevated but also promised an increase in blessings and a noble status in the sight of God. In the current socio-religious context, the value of gratitude holds significant relevance as a foundation for character development and emotional resilience. This study affirms that gratitude is a universal Islamic value that integrates theological, psychological, and ethical aspects. Thus, it is expected that this research contributes both theoretically and practically to the development of thematic Qur'anic studies and a deeper understanding of spiritual consciousness.
