Abstract

Considering the crucial skill required in formal education, specifically in higher education, academic writing is a part of every academic writers life. However, some writers often feel that they have insufficient knowledge of source use and academic writing. Responding to this issue, this systematic review aims to untangle factors encountered by the writers while having academic writing and the solution to cope with the problems. A literature search supported by Publish or Perish application explored academic articles published in Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2014 to 2022. Employing the PRISMA method, 19 academic articles in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method designs were selected to explore the issue. Exploring the selected articles, this systematic review resulted in the following findings: (1) the factors influencing students writing apprehension include unfamiliarity with academic tone and style, beliefs about writing, cognitive and behavioral anxiety, and insufficient support for writing; and (2) to cope with this writing apprehension, students may seek help from others, improve their writing strategies, and effectively manage writing feedback. Furthermore, faculty members should provide more appropriate teaching techniques and opportunities for students to share ideas with their peers to reduce writing anxiety and apprehension. The implications for pedagogical practices and future research directions are further discussed.

Abstract

This study examines how undergraduate students perceive and experience the Flipped Classroom strategy in a Business English speaking course. In this model, instruction moves outside the classroom through videos and readings so that in‑class sessions are reserved for interactive activities. Although widely used in general EFL contexts, evidence of Flipped Classroom’s effectiveness in Business English, which belongs to English for Specific Purposes (ESP), is limited. The research employed a mixed‑methods design. A fourteen‑item Likert‑scale survey completed by 133 Indonesian English majors assessed perceptions of efficiency, engagement, time management and satisfaction. Semi‑structured interviews with seven volunteers provided insights on preparation, confidence, anxiety and collaboration. Students watched pre‑class videos via the university’s learning platform and participated in discussions, role‑plays and problem‑based tasks during class. The quantitative results showed positive perceptions: efficiency mean 3.91, motivation and engagement mean 3.76, time management and enjoyment mean 3.73, and satisfaction mean 4.24. Interviews highlighted that pre‑class preparation improved self‑regulated learning, boosted confidence, reduced speaking anxiety and promoted teamwork. The study’s single‑institution scope and modest sample limit generalisation; larger, diverse studies with objective measures are advised. For practice, educators should provide concise pre‑class materials, clear instructions, and adequate technological support, while designing learner‑centred, communicative classroom activities. The findings contribute to the sparse literature on Flipped Classroom in Business English and suggest its potential for enhancing communication skills and learner autonomy in professional language courses.

Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge plays a crucial role in reading comprehension, particularly in extensive reading contexts. However, limited research has explored how Indonesian EFL higher education students employ vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) during extensive reading activities. This study employed a qualitative narrative inquiry approach to investigate the vocabulary learning strategies used by three first-year undergraduate students from a university in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. Data were collected through narrative frames and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed thematically based on Schmitt’s taxonomy of VLSs. The findings revealed that participants employed a range of strategies, primarily contextual guessing and memory association (cognitive strategies), along with social and metacognitive approaches. One student relied heavily on social interaction, particularly with family, to understand new words. Another participant integrated vocabulary learning with personal interests, such as singing, to enhance retention (metacognitive strategy). All participants reported limited reliance on dictionaries, preferring to infer meaning from context or relate new words to prior knowledge. These findings suggest that vocabulary learning in extensive reading is influenced by learners’ autonomy, motivation, and personal engagement. The pleasurable nature of extensive reading encouraged strategy use that was both adaptive and individualized. Narrative inquiry provided rich insights into learners' thought processes and behaviors during vocabulary acquisition. The study offers practical implications for integrating reflective, learner-centered activities into EFL reading instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the achievement and differences in the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) program in elementary schools in Bantul Regency. This evaluative research employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing the CIPP evaluation model with a quantitative descriptive orientation. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, involving respondents consisting of teachers and elementary students from one public and one private elementary school, namely SD Muhammadiyah Bendo and SD Negeri Sutran. The results at SD Muhammadiyah Bendo indicate that 28.13% fall into the "Very Good" category, 12.5% into the "Good" category, 21.88% into the "Fair" category, 18.75% into the "Poor" category, and 18.75% into the "Very Poor" category. Meanwhile, at SD Negeri Sutran, 25% are in the "Very Good" category, 40.6% in the "Good" category, 18.75% in the "Medium" category, 9.4% in the "Low" category, and 6.25% in the "Very Low" category. Overall, the findings reveal a distributional difference in survey results that reflects varying degrees of program success between the two schools. Based on the data distribution and the number of students in the lower categories, SD Negeri Sutran demonstrates a more consistent and comprehensive implementation of the GLS program compared to SD Muhammadiyah Bendo

Abstract

Project based Learning models need to be developed in English learning. This research is needed to support learning model innovation. The purpose of this study is to produce an online-based PJBL model that is valid and appropriate to use in learning English. This study uses research and development (R&D) methods, with a 4-D development model (Define, Design, Development, Disseminate). However, caused of the time limitation to accomplish the steps, this research only implemented at three steps; define, design and development. The instruments used are interview guidelines, questionnaire sheets, and documentation. The subjects in this study were English teachers at SMA Muhammadiyah Langsa and expert lecturers at Samudra University. The results showed that at the Define stage the development of an Online-based PJBL model in English lessons in senior high schools was needed. At the design stage, a draft model and a hypothetical model are obtained. Furthermore, at the Development stage, the results of the media expert validation analysis with an average of 91.25% while material expert validation analysis with an average of 90% concluded that the draft model developed was valid with a fairly high category. , the percentage of the feasibility of the model based on the teacher's response was 0,83% with the Very Eligible category. Therefore, the Online-based PJBL model is valid and appropriate to use in learning English at SMA Muhammadiyah Langsa.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate how Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) enhances the speaking skills of junior high school students in an Islamic boarding school context and how it enhances the quality of the teaching and learning process. Due to the dominance of teacher-centred instruction and limited student engagement in such contexts, this study proposes to apply a more interactive and student-centred approach. This study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, involving 29 male students in grade 7 over two cycles. Each cycle consists of four phases: plan, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, reflective teaching journal, and oral proficiency tests to earn both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings revealed significant enhancements in students’ speaking performance. The students’ mastery level increased from 31.03% (initial data) to 65.52% (cycle 1) and 93.10% (cycle 2). Students demonstrated enhanced fluency, vocabulary, and confidence, along with enhanced motivation and participation in communicative tasks. TBLT also helped reduce speaking anxiety and encouraged more meaningful language use inside and outside the classroom. Despite some challenges, such as limited access to technology and the need for additional scaffolding for certain students, this study demonstrated that TBLT is a viable approach to enhancing speaking skills in a boarding school context. The findings also suggest that TBLT helped to foster students’ communicative competence and enrich English language instruction in similar educational contexts. Recommendations are offered for sustaining TBLT implementation and for future research on long-term impacts and differentiated scaffolding.
