Abstract

Teachers' language assessment literacy (LAL) is critical to the success of education, the quality of students' learning, and students' willingness to study. Yet, studies on teachers' LAL preparation to face the Merdeka Belajar (Freedom of Learning) curriculum are still scarce. Most LAL studies used questionnaires to assess teachers' knowledge. In contrast to that, this study utilized teachers’ LAL knowledge test adapted from Al-bahlani (2019). This study investigates teachers' self-perceived LAL consisting of competence, frequency of practice, and assessment knowledge in The Association of English Teachers Banyumas district region (MGMP) with a total of 77 participants involved by investigating teachers' self-perceived LAL consisting of competence, frequency of practice, and assessment knowledge. The current study utilized two data sources, including a questionnaire and a language assessment knowledge test to employ a quantitative methodology using MANOVA and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results showed both strengths and weaknesses in the teachers’ LAL, as well as matches and mismatches between teachers' self-perceived and shown assessment knowledge. Overall, EFL teachers in Banyumas regency are at a fair level of LAL and pre-service training in assessment was the variable with the greatest impact on teachers' LAL. Future research may also require investigating the objectives, actions, and outcomes of assessment training provided by teachers’ training institutes and professional development programs.  Keywords: LAL, Language assessment, Language Assessment Literacy, Merdeka Belajar curriculum, Freedom of Learning Curriculum.

Abstract

There is a growing body of literature examining the significance of authentic assessment in enhancing teachers’ assessment literacy. This study set out to investigate pre-service English teachers’ perception of authentic assessment in their speaking class. This sequential explanatory study employed a set of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews in the data collection. A total of 46 pre-service English teachers in their final year participated in this study. They completed a web-based survey, and four of them who used authentic assessment in their speaking class were selected for an interview. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive analysis while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that 71.74% of respondents were aware of what authentic evaluation entails as learned from various sources, primarily lecturers and tutors. More than 25% of respondents could not comprehend an authentic assessment, and fewer than a fifth (19.57%) of those surveyed had never taken a course on authentic assessment. The results from the survey and interview also showed that lack of time or the lengthy implementation time of authentic assessment, as well as the class size were reported to be the main challenges of the students in applying authentic assessment. Oral interviews, picture-cued descriptions or stories, information gaps, story/text retelling, role plays/simulations, oral reports, and debates were examples of the authentic assessment tools they normally used. This study implied the need for more authentic assessment trainings and or sessions for these pre-service English teachers in the future. Keywords: perception, authentic assessment, speaking

Abstract

The current EFL curriculum for high schools in Indonesia demands integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains in assessment. Therefore, teachers must consider these domains in designing assessment instruments and use them, including in a full-online class. In this type of class, they must choose effective methods with principled eclecticism that meet the assessment principles. This study examines the teachers’ assessment process, from constructing the assessment devices to implementing the test in virtual classrooms. The qualitative research approach was used to explore the online-based assessments involving 16 English teachers recruited through convenience sampling techniques. Accordingly, the data were collected using virtual semi-structured interviews through a WhatsApp call. The data were analysed descriptively through a thematic analysis integrated with an interactive technique to locate and identify common patterns of meaning in a data set. The findings show that teachers used several methods to design their tests in the planning stage, considering several aspects based on the eclectic approach principles for effective assessment practices. However, teachers need more assessment literacy regarding their knowledge of test quality. This research employed qualitative data from a small number of teachers, so future studies that include more teachers from different locations and consider different viewpoints, including those of students, families, and policymakers, on how to evaluate student achievement virtually are recommended.

Abstract

Despite the growing body of literature recognizing the importance of multicultural education in the 21st Century, little is known about the preservice English teachers’ (PSETs) multicultural disposition (MD) in the Indonesian setting. This survey study examined the Multicultural Dispositions Index (MDI) of PSETs. The 22 items of Thompson’s (2009a) MDI scales with four dimensions, i.e., cross-cultural competence, multicultural worldview, knowledge of professional and personal self, and professional skills and commitment, were adopted to explore the PSET MDI in this study. It was a nine-type self-report scale. The study involved 185 PSETs (aged 17–22 years; 146 females and 39 males) from one of well-established teacher education universities in Indonesia. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted to confirm the underlying MDI dimensions. The findings showed that the PSETs MDI was best represented by 18 items that emerged into the same four dimensions. It means the PSETs in Indonesia possess the four dimensions of multicultural dispositions, facilitating them to navigate school-level multicultural education. Four items from the original 22 items of MDI must be due to the cross-loading and low factor loading since the value was found to be more than 0.50. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the MDI be revised when used in the Indonesian multicultural context.

Abstract

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools have implemented blended learning, where learning is held online and offline. The use of blended learning is considered effective but the application of blended learning will still be the same when applied to inclusive classes where there are not only regular students but also students with special education needs (SEN). The purpose of this research is to better understand teachers' perspectives on blended learning activities in English classrooms, as well as perceived barriers and problems, also in this research, was to tell a story. To know how EFL teacher experiences when teaching in an inclusive classroom the researcher interviewed an EFL secondary school teacher. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of inclusive education implementation is dependent on teachers' instructional approaches, learning resources, and institutional and governmental support. Her perspectives on inclusive education were critical in teaching people about special education students and changing attitudes while dealing with both regularly developing and disabled students. The financial position of the student's families is one of her ongoing difficulties as she tries to adopt blended learning in the inclusive classroom. She had vowed to investigate blended learning and find methods to include it in regular courses or inclusive classes.

Abstract

The context of English education in Yemen provides a critical backdrop for comprehending the challenges Yemeni students face in acquiring proficiency in English pronunciation. These challenges are primarily rooted in the distinct differences between the Arabic and English sound systems, variations in syllable structure and intonation, and the influence of local dialects. Such factors are instrumental in identifying the obstacles Yemeni learners encounter in accurately articulating English phonemes. This research delves into the efficacy of phonetics instruction, specifically phonics training, in ameliorating English pronunciation skills among students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings in Yemen. Employing a literature review methodology, this study meticulously collects and analyzes data from pertinent academic sources to assess the impact of phonics training on pronunciation proficiency. The findings reveal a significant enhancement in students' ability to correctly identify and articulate English phonemes, thereby improving their verbal interaction and comprehension skills, and bolstering their confidence in English communication. The contributions of this study are manifold. It illuminates the pivotal role of phonetics instruction in refining English pronunciation among EFL learners in Yemen, providing empirical evidence to support the integration of phonetic teaching within the EFL curriculum. Moreover, it advocates for the enrichment of educational resources and teacher development programs, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing English pronunciation in Yemen's English language education framework. Through its insights, this study not only addresses a critical gap in the literature but also proposes actionable recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of English pronunciation teaching in Yemeni EFL classrooms. In essence, this study underscores the transformative potential of phonics training in elevating the English language proficiency of Yemeni students, thereby contributing significantly to the broader discourse on language acquisition and pedagogy.

Abstract

Critical thinking and writing are considered as one of the twenty-first century skills that must be acquired by students; however, research on this area still needs more empirical paucity of evidence. The present study aims to reveal English students’ learning needs on critical writing course at university level. Drawing on survey research, this study invites 437 undergraduate students majoring in English department from four universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. Statistical analysis identifies key student priorities: acquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing information; effective communication; articulating their opinions; publishing their writings; and presenting materials at international forums. The data also reveal that English students encounter significant challenges in critically analyzing information and drawing conclusions from reading passages. Regarding their expectations for critical writing instruction, students aspire to enhance both their critical thinking and academic writing abilities. This is particularly pertinent for pre-service teachers who will need to teach content and produce both academic and non-academic publications. Additionally, the survey indicates a positive student response to incorporating technology (e.g., social media, networking sites, websites) into collaborative learning activities for critical writing courses. These findings provide valuable insights into the needs and expectations of English students regarding critical writing courses, offering a clear direction for course design and instructional strategies.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning has been studied over three decades in various subjects and schools, This meta-analysis study aimed to synthesize the most recent findings of the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), specifically on students' mathematical reasoning ability. The data were obtained from relevant primary studies published in national and international journals or proceedings during 2014-2021. Ten effect sizes from eight studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were analyzed using a systematic review and meta-analysis. JASP 0.15.0.0 software was used to measure the formula of Hedges g to determine the effect size. The result showed that PBL has a strong effect on students' mathematical reasoning ability (gRE = 2.062, 95% CI [1.436, 2.689], p < 0.001) when compared to traditional learning. The results of the analysis of moderator variables revealed that publication year (Qb = 5.460, p < 0.05) and sampling technique (Qb = 9.032, p < 0.05) had significant effect on the effectiveness of PBL on students' mathematical reasoning ability, while educational levels (Qb = 1.649, p > 0.05), sample size (Qb = 2.081, p > 0.05) and publication sources (Qb = 0.573, p > 0.05) did not show any significant effect. The result of this study provides important information for further meta-analysis study and the implementation of PBL in mathematics learning.
