Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study is based on the implementation of online learning by the government during the pandemic era. Online learning system requires students and teachers to take advantage of existing technology to keep learning even though they do not meet each other. During the pandemic, almost all students in Indonesia experienced online learning by utilizing applications such as zoom and google meet. The purpose of this study is to discover the perceptions of XI grade students at SMA N 1 Patimuan for the academic year of 2021/2022 during the implementation of online learning in the pandemic era. All data obtained through questionnaires distributed using google form. The subjects of this study were the 112 students of XI grade at the SMA N 1 Patimuan. The study found that students felt dissatisfied and experienced some challenges during the implementation of online learning. From their point of view, the disadvantages of online classes outnumber the benefits. The lack of understanding about online learning applications, weak internet connectivity, poor interaction with others, and hard to understand the materials are the most challenges found

Abstract

Feedback is essential for improving EFL students' writing skills, even though it is still underutilized. Yet, only some studies examine multimodal dialogic feedback (MDF) on students' writing. To address the gap, this study, which employed an exploratory mixed-method, investigated the impact of MDF mediated by utilizing Google Docs and Zoom conferences as convenience platforms in a writing class among some Indonesian university learners and the impact of this MDF on the revision quality of the student texts. Furthermore, the study explored the students' perceptions of MDF from the formative assessment framework. While the quantitative method through classroom action research (CAR) with 39 students recruited purposively, examined the impact of MDF on students' writing skills, the qualitative approach using semi-structured in-person interviews with eleven students recruited conveniently, addressed the student's perceptions of the influence of MDF on their writing skills. The quantitative data were analyzed through simple descriptive statistical analyses to visualize the trend of students' improvement and the instructor's feedback. The qualitative data on the students' positive perceptions of the impact of MDF on their writing were analyzed using thematic analysis. Statistical analyses of the student's texts reveal that the student's writing skills are gradually developing. The results demonstrate how mediating MDF during teaching-learning writing affected the student's work on organization, content, language use, mechanics, and text length. Implications for writing instruction and the instructor's feedback are also discussed. Although this current study has limitations, suggestions for further research are offered.

Abstract

Despite the growing attention to EFL students"™ development of critical writing, research identifying their learning needs for this language skill remains more paucity of evidence. The present study aims to explore EFL teachers"™ perspectives on students"™ learning needs of critical writing course in university setting. Drawing on exploratory qualitative research, this study invites eight EFL teachers teaching critical writing course at some universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. The required data are elicited using semi-structured interviews to reach in-depth understanding about the research issue. The findings yield a number of issues conveyed by the EFL teachers related to students"™ learning needs of critical writing. First, teaching critical writing plays a crucial role in shaping students"™ profile toward the twenty-first century skills. Second, a learning model of critical writing instruction, including the syllabus and plannings, learning technique and media, instructional materials, and assessment model, must be developed. As the pedagogical implication, ELT practitioners and policy makers can use this study"™s findings as references in taking policy related to teaching critical writing in university setting.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence and burnout of teachers are highly discussed in previous studies. This study set out to examine (1) the dimensions of emotional intelligence, (2) the dimensions of burnout, (3) the level of burnout, and (4) the relationship among the dimensions of in-service English teachers in Yogyakarta. The method used in this study is a quantitative correlational study through a survey. The instruments used were questionnaires adapted from the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and The Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). The participants of this study were 204 in-service English teachers in Yogyakarta. The data were analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to find out the dimensions of emotional intelligence and burnout of the teachers and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to find the relationship among the dimensions of EI and burnout. The findings show that the emotional intelligence emerged into four dimensions, namely perception of emotion, managing own emotion, managing other's emotions, and utilization of emotions, while the dimensions of teachers burnout emerged into four dimensions namely occupational exhaustion, depersonalisation, and personal accomplishment. Surprisingly the findings show something unusual, it contrasts with several previous findings regarding the level of teachers' burnout.

Abstract

This paper began with concerns about the lacks of sharp rhetorical styles in writing, the methods of citing references, and the formulations of theories and arguments within the conceptual framework in thesis reports written by students of the English Language Education Department. The study was carried out to explain the rhetorical styles of students’ theoretical framework in their thesis report, to reveal weaknesses or the lack of strong arguments in conveying ideas in a straightforward and structured manner, and to suggest actions to prevent the problem form reoccurring in the future. The data were collected from the final project manuscripts written by students of the English Education Study Program, totaling 110 works. The analysis followed the stages of data collection, data display, data reduction and drawing conclusions. The general results of the research showed that the students did not include too many elements of critical thinking in their thesis literature review. In general, they used attribution quite excessively (78%), followed by elements of establishing links between sources (15%), and comparing their own findings or interpretations with other sources 4%. Meanwhile, the elements of application, evaluation, and statement of use had the smallest portion, each 1%. Problems found in the sample were listed based on the comparison between the data and the standard commonly used to regulate the procedure of writing a scientific paper. Recommendations were then formulated which can be used as guidelines for final project writers or any other parties related to writing scientific papers in general; they are training students of the importance of using all rhetorical styles in their citation when preparing a strong conceptual framework.

Abstract

In the field of English language education, the crucial role of assessment for learning (AfL) requires teachers to possess robust assessment literacy. This study explores AfL literacy among high school English teachers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia by utilizing Alonzo's validated AfL survey that establishes a comprehensive six-factor model, delineating teachers as assessors, pedagogists, student partners, motivators, learners, and stakeholder partners. Exploiting confirmatory factor analysis and examining demographic variations, this quantitative research invited 202 English teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia selected purposively based on the geographical service area. Data were collected through an online questionnaire adopting Alonzo's 42-questions AfL and were analyzed quantitatively via Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with four indices, namely comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and standard root mean square residual (SRMR).The findings substantiate the efficacy of the six-factor AfL model, underscoring educators' roles extending beyond traditional frameworks. The investigation also introduces a tool featuring detailed performance descriptors, addressing deficiencies, and harmonizing with AfL principles. It deduces that heightened foundational comprehension among English educators cultivates enhancements in AfL literacy and propels the refinement of professional evaluative competencies, thereby enriching the nuanced discourse surrounding AfL within language pedagogy. While the study's scope is confined to a specific geographical area and a limited cohort of participating instructors, it significantly enriches our comprehension of AfL literacy among English pedagogies. This research, therefore, provides a foundation for professional growth initiatives and facilitates enhancements in pedagogical approaches and academic achievement.
