Although the relationship between student motivation, self-perception, and achievement in science education is well established, there is still a lack of focused studies on these aspects at the lower secondary level, particularly in private school settings where student demographics and learning environments may pose unique challenges. The purpose of this study is to: (1) assess lower secondary students' motivation and self-concept in scientific learning; and (2), using correlational analysis and qualitative feedback, determine ways to improve these aspects. Using a quantitative descriptive survey design, this study assessed 60 grade 7-9 students from a private lower secondary school. The Students’ Motivation Toward Science Learning (SMTSL) and adapted Chemistry Self-Concept Inventory (CSCI) measured motivation and self-concept, respectively. Data analysis included mean scores for both variables and Spearman’s rank correlation (accounting for Liker-scale ordinality and non-normal distributions). A moderate-high level of motivation (Active learning strategies [ALS]=4.0-4.1 highest, Performance Goal [PG]=2.8-3.1 lowest) and self-concept (Positive Perception of Science Self Concept [PSSC]=3.8-3.9 highest, Mathematic Self-Concept [MSC]=2.9-3.2 lowest) with moderate positive correlation (r = 0.572, p < 0.001) underscores that self-concept and motivation are interrelated, suggests interventions should simultaneously promote active learning (to enhance ALS) while addressing mathematical confidence (to improve MSC). These findings suggest that teachers can boost engagement through active learning and confidence-building strategies, while school and policymakers should design targete interventions to support students with low scientific confidence and high performance pressure.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize quality education and environmental protection. Biodiversity education in Phase E requires students to solve problems related to biodiversity. However, complex terminology and limited learning tools create challenges. This research aims to analyze effective learning strategies for teaching biodiversity using a TPACK framework. The method used in this research is a literature review carried out systematically by PRISMA. The analysis will map pedagogical approaches, content based on CoRes analysis, and technological aspects. Findings will inform the development of effective learning strategies for high school biodiversity education, contributing to achieving SDGs, particularly SDG 15 on terrestrial ecosystems. The finding shows that The use of CoRes to narrow down the information is required to instruct students and promote the attainment of the 15th SDG goal. Based on the findings of the analysis, the pedagogical review of the approach used, namely local wisdom, the field trip method, and the discovery learning model, as well as the use of technology to assist students in identifying PlantNet, Picture This, and iNaturalist, is considered effective to be implemented in learning biodiversity material.

The purpose of this study was to improve students’ problem-solving ability and metacognitive self-regulation (MSR) by applying science technology society (STS) learning model integrated with metacognitive self-regulation. The participants were 13 students from Department of Biology Education who took microbiology courses. A quasi-experimental method with one-group pre and posttest design was used in this study. Data were collected through pre and posttest with eight open ended questions to measure students’ problem-solving ability on four microbiology topics (food, pathogen, waste and water microbiology). These topics were studied sequentially in two months. The instrument used to measure MSR is a questionnaire with open-ended questions. This questionnaire was developed based on three aspects of MSR namely, planning, monitoring and evaluation. MSR questionnaire was administered to students at the end of each topic. The N-gain test was used to analyze the improvement of students' problem-solving ability on each topic. The average score of all aspects in MSR questionnaire was used to explore students’ metacognitive self-regulation. The correlation between MSR and problem-solving ability was analyzed using Pearson correlation. The results revealed that the N gain score of problem-solving ability was increased from 0.56 in the first topic to 0.7 in the next three topics. The average of MSR score also increased from 66.15 in the first topic to 87.23 in fourth topic. There was a positive correlation between students’ MSR and problem-solving ability. These results indicated that application of Science Technology Society integrated with MSR is an effective strategy in improving students’ problem-solving ability and MSR. The implementation of this research is to develop a lecture program as an effort to improve the learning process

The learning outcomes in the independent curriculum expect students to have skills in processing and analyzing data and information. These skills are in line with the information processing abilities developed by Marzano (1993). This research aims to determine the level of students' information processing abilities in biotechnology learning and its relationship with students' cognitive processes. The data in this research were processed using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square–Structural Equation Model) analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, the instruments used to test information processing abilities, level 1 retrieval and level 2 comprehension cognitive systems, metacognitive systems and self-systems are valid and reliable. However, the level 3 analysis and level 4 knowledge utilization cognitive systems showed invalid and unreliable results so no further evaluation was carried out at these two levels. The results of the inner model analysis show that increasing information processing abilities have a significant and linear relationship to increasing cognitive processes. The relationship between information processing abilities and cognitive processes from the highest respectively is students' comprehension (L2), self-system (L6), metacognitive system (L5), and retrieval (L1).
