Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of developing a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model to enhance students' critical and creative skills in learning procedural texts at SMPN 7 Satap Maiwa. The goal was to create a dynamic, engaging, and effective learning environment using the PjBL model to improve students' skills, particularly in English learning. This research employed quantitative methods to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the PjBL model in enhancing students' critical and creative thinking abilities in procedural text learning. The development of PjBL in education has seen significant progress, especially in secondary English language teaching. This study specifically aimed to assess the application of the PjBL model in teaching procedural texts, with a focus on creating posters using the Canva application by analyzing a tourist spot. The study involved 15 students in the experimental group and 15 students in the control group. The results showed a significant improvement in the students' scores from pre-test to post-test in the experimental group. The average pre-test score for the experimental group was 68.66, while the post-test mean score increased to 86.33. In comparison, the control group’s pre-test and post-test scores were 57.66 and 82.66, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that the p-value was smaller than the α level (0.001 < 0.05), leading to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of H1, indicating that the use of PjBL in learning procedural texts had a positive impact. In conclusion, this study suggests that integrating the PjBL model can effectively enhance students' critical and creative skills, contributing to improved overall learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the collaborative learning method in enhancing students' motivation to learn English, focusing on seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 SATAP MAIWA. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study explores how collaborative learning techniques influence students’ motivation and evaluates their role in improving the English learning process. The findings indicate that the collaborative learning method has a significant positive impact on students’ motivation. Among the 20 students who participated, 16 (80%) reported increased confidence in using English, opportunities to assist each other in overcoming challenges, and improved problem-solving skills when completing assignments. Group interactions further encouraged students to participate actively in learning activities, making the process more engaging and enjoyable. Collaborative learning also fostered stronger peer relationships and provided a supportive environment where students felt more comfortable expressing their opinions and ideas. The study concludes that the collaborative learning method is an effective strategy for boosting students' motivation in learning English. By working together in groups, students not only gain confidence in communication but also develop essential social and cognitive skills. This method encourages students to be more responsible for their learning while promoting mutual support and cooperation. Therefore, collaborative learning can serve as an alternative approach to improving the quality of English instruction, particularly in encouraging student-centered learning and active participation in the classroom.

Abstract

Speaking skills are a fundamental aspect of learning English as a foreign language, essential for academic and professional success. However, many students, especially in non-English-speaking environments, face difficulties in communication due to limited vocabulary, low confidence, and lack of practical speaking opportunities. This study explores the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing students’ English-speaking abilities at MTs YMPI Rappang. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and an analysis of students’ speaking performance before and after PBL implementation. The results show that PBL significantly improved students’ speaking skills in terms of fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and confidence. Students became more motivated to speak and actively participated in classroom discussions and group projects. The collaborative nature of PBL fostered peer learning and provided students with authentic speaking experiences, enabling them to practice English in real-world contexts. This study highlights the potential of PBL as an effective method for improving speaking skills and recommends its broader application in language teaching to create more engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Werewolf game in improving the speaking skills of second-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang. Speaking is one of the most essential language skills, yet many students face difficulties in fluency, confidence, and vocabulary usage. Traditional teaching methods often fail to actively engage students in meaningful communication. Therefore, implementing game-based learning, such as the Werewolf game, offers an interactive and enjoyable approach to language learning. This research employed a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design involving seven students. Participants engaged in structured speaking activities before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS, revealing a significant improvement in students' speaking performance. The mean score increased from 54% to 83%, with a p-value of 0.006 (< 0.05), indicating a statistically significant impact. These findings suggest that incorporating the Werewolf game into speaking lessons can effectively enhance students’ participation, motivation, and confidence in expressing their ideas in English. The Werewolf game promotes real-time interaction, critical thinking, and spontaneous speech, which are crucial for developing communicative competence. By encouraging students to articulate their thoughts, respond to others, and negotiate meaning in a dynamic setting, the game fosters a more engaging and less anxiety-inducing environment compared to conventional methods.

Abstract

This research investigates the difficulties faced by second-semester students of the English Education Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in offline classroom settings. The research problem focuses on identifying linguistic, psychological, and contextual factors that hinder effective learning. The main objective is to analyze these challenges and provide insights for improving teaching and learning practices. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation from 15 purposively selected students. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (1994) framework data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing supported by NVivo software for thematic coding. Findings reveal that linguistic difficulties, particularly in listening comprehension, grammar mastery, pronunciation, and vocabulary, are the most dominant obstacles. Psychological barriers such as speaking anxiety, fear of mistakes, and low self-confidence further impede participation. Contextual issues, including noisy classrooms, ineffective teaching methods, and limited speaking practice, exacerbate the problem. Despite these challenges, students suggested interactive teaching strategies, such as games, storytelling, audiovisual aids, and real-life examples, to enhance engagement and comprehension. The research concludes that addressing both cognitive and affective needs through student-centered and communicative approaches, alongside improving classroom management and teaching materials, is essential for fostering a more effective EFL learning environment.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalized world, English proficiency is essential for academic and professional success. However, many first-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang remain at a basic proficiency level, which hinders their progression toward intermediate competence as required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This research addresses the lack of tailored instructional materials that support students’ transition from basic to intermediate proficiency. This study aims to design and develop instructional materials based on a comprehensive needs analysis. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), the research engaged 30 first-semester students, three lecturers, and five alumni. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, diagnostic tests, pretests, posttests, and classroom observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests, while qualitative data were examined thematically. The findings revealed that students faced significant challenges in speaking fluently, comprehending oral input at natural speed, identifying main ideas in reading, and organizing ideas in writing. The developed instructional materials, which integrated task-based and skill-based approaches aligned with CEFR descriptors, demonstrated effectiveness in bridging these gaps. Posttest results showed significant improvement across all four language skills, confirming the materials’ role in supporting students’ transition toward intermediate proficiency. This research contributes to English language education by providing empirically validated instructional materials that respond to learners’ actual needs. It offers practical implications for lecturers, institutions, and future researchers in designing relevant and level-appropriate English learning resources.
