Abstract

The integration of Physical Education (PE) and mental health promotion in adolescents has become a growing focus in educational and public health discourse. This evidence-based systematic literature review aims to explore the impact of school-based PE programs on adolescent mental health, highlighting effective integration models, mediators, and challenges. Using six databases (Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Garuda), twenty peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024 were identified and analyzed thematically and narratively. Findings consistently demonstrate that regular participation in structured PE is associated with reduced levels of depression (SMD = -0.64; p < 0.01), anxiety, and stress, and enhanced well-being, self-esteem, and resilience. For instance, a meta-analysis by Lubans et al. (2016) revealed that school-based physical activity significantly improved psychological well-being across 14 controlled studies. The effectiveness of these interventions is moderated by factors such as gender, age, frequency, and duration of activity, and social support. Programs integrating mindfulness, cooperative games, and sport-based counseling were found particularly effective. Despite promising outcomes, several barriers hinder implementation, including a lack of teacher training, weak institutional support, and prevailing stigma toward mental health in schools. Multi-component interventions—merging PE with counseling, mental health education, and teacher capacity building—are crucial for sustainable outcomes. This review emphasizes the importance of embedding mental health promotion within PE curricula to support holistic adolescent development and calls for future policies to prioritize integrative, evidence-based approaches.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of sports coaching expertise into sports entrepreneurship as a strategic effort to promote business development in Makassar City. Despite the city’s rich sporting ecosystem, comprising over 150 registered clubs, 80 certified coaches, and a growing number of private training centres, the adoption of sportpreneurship remains underdeveloped. Using a qualitative descriptive design with an exploratory case study approach, data were collected from 50 informants, including experienced coaches, athlete-entrepreneurs, academics, sports business owners, and sports training institution managers. Methods included semi-structured in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), document analysis, and participatory observation. Findings reveal that 84% of coaches recognize leadership and communication skills as highly transferable to entrepreneurial contexts, yet 62% cite regulatory and financial constraints as major obstacles. FGDs showed broad consensus on the need for structured mentorship and entrepreneurship education. Document analysis highlighted gaps in local policy and training curricula, while observational data confirmed inconsistent support for sportpreneur activities in practice. A strategic model was developed, consisting of four core components: coaching competencies, institutional support, education and mentorship, and partnership ecosystems. This model offers practical guidance for policymakers, educators, and sports organizations seeking to foster entrepreneurship within the coaching community. The study concludes that aligning coaching skills with entrepreneurial strategies can enhance individual career opportunities and support sustainable economic development in regional sports sectors. Recommendations include curriculum reform, targeted policy incentives, and public-private collaborations to operationalize the proposed model.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between strategic sports management and athlete performance enhancement through organisational effectiveness within the tennis program at the Faculty of Sports Science and Health (FIKK), Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Amid growing expectations for competitive achievement in university-level sports, there is an urgent need to optimise performance through efficient management practices. Using a mixed-method approach involving surveys, interviews, document analysis, and performance metrics, this study evaluates how five key dimensions of strategic management—planning, leadership, coordination, monitoring, and resource allocation—affect athlete outcomes. Quantitative data were collected from 32 student-athletes and eight coaching staff using structured questionnaires and performance monitoring over 12 months. Qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews and analysis of institutional documents. The findings revealed that leadership (Mean = 4.20) and strategic planning (Mean = 4.12) were the most influential factors contributing to performance improvements. Coordination (Mean = 3.98) and monitoring (Mean = 4.05) showed moderate effectiveness, while resource allocation scored the lowest (Mean = 3.67), indicating existing logistical challenges. Statistical regression analysis demonstrated that organisational effectiveness significantly mediated the relationship between strategic management and athletic performance, accounting for 62.3% of the variance in athlete improvement outcomes (p < 0.01). Key performance indicators showed a 50% increase in match win rate, a 27% improvement in serve accuracy, an 8.4% gain in VO₂ max, and a 20.6% rise in athlete motivation scores throughout the study. This research provides empirical evidence that effective sports management strategies can drive meaningful enhancements in athlete performance when supported by well-structured organisational systems. It offers a replicable model for academic sports institutions aiming to balance education and elite performance. The study concludes with recommendations for refining resource allocation, fostering interdepartmental collaboration, and strengthening leadership pipelines in sports programs.

Abstract

Learning modelThis study aimed to develop and evaluate a modified volleyball-based learning model (V-ENGAGE) to enhance student engagement in physical education (PE) at SMK Negeri 7 Makassar. Using a research and development (R&D) design with a quantitative pretest-posttest approach, data were collected from 60 students through engagement questionnaires and performance-based volleyball skill tests. The V-ENGAGE model integrates modified games, collaborative tasks, reflective discussions, and contextual relevance tailored to vocational high school settings. Results showed a significant increase in student engagement across behavioral, emotional, and cognitive domains. The average engagement score improved from 64.2 (pretest) to 83.7 (posttest), indicating a 30.3% enhancement. Volleyball skills also improved, with mean scores rising from 68.5 to 86.1 in the final assessment (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that the V-ENGAGE model effectively boosts both engagement and learning outcomes in PE. The study concludes that a modified volleyball learning model, when pedagogically aligned to students’ needs and school context, can promote meaningful and active participation in physical education. The model can serve as a strategic tool for PE teachers to improve student motivation and performance.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of a modified badminton-based physical education learning model in improving students' motor skills at SMA Negeri 16 Makassar. Using a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group, 60 students were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the modified badminton-based PE intervention for 8 weeks, while the control group followed the standard PE curriculum. Motor skills were assessed using validated instruments from TGMD-3 and MABC-2, including agility (shuttle run), balance (stork stand), coordination (wall toss), reaction time (ruler drop), and speed (30-meter sprint). Posttest results indicated statistically significant improvements in all motor skill domains for the experimental group: agility improved by 19.6%, balance by 21.3%, coordination by 17.4%, reaction time by 15.7%, and speed by 12.8% (p < 0.05). In contrast, the control group showed minimal changes. These findings suggest that badminton-based physical education is highly effective in enhancing students’ motor competencies. The study recommends integrating modified sport-specific models into PE curricula to promote motor skill development and physical literacy.

Abstract

This study is an experimental study with a quantitative approach that aims to analyse the effect of self-hypnosis training on improving concentration and emotional management skills in archery athletes in South Sulawesi Province. The method used in this study is a one-group pre-test post-test design experiment, with a total sampling technique, involving 10 athletes as respondents. The research process was carried out for two months, starting from the initial observation stage, implementation of the intervention, to the final evaluation. Self-hypnosis training was given in a structured and systematic manner during the research period, with the aim of improving the mental focus and emotional stability of athletes in facing competition pressure. The research instruments used included a concentration test and a validated emotional control questionnaire. The data obtained were analysed using a t-test (paired sample t-test) to determine significant differences between the pre-test and post-test results. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there was a significant effect of self-hypnosis training on improving athletes' concentration and emotional abilities. The observation t value of 12.0000 is smaller than the t table value of 19.3000, and the significance level of 0.000 is smaller than the value of α = 0.05. This finding indicates that self-hypnosis training can significantly help athletes improve the quality of focus and emotional control during training and matches. It can be concluded that self-hypnosis training is an effective method to be applied in athlete psychological development programs, especially in sports that require high concentration, such as archery.

Abstract

Environmental health is a crucial indicator of public health development, and the role of sanitation workers in community health centers (Puskesmas) is crucial in maintaining a healthy environment. However, environmental health program implementation remains challenging due to staff's limited understanding of program management aspects, such as planning, implementation, and evaluation. This Community Service Program (PKM) activity aims to improve the capacity of sanitation workers through environmental health program management training. This activity was held at Community Health Center X over two days, involving 20 sanitation workers from the community health center's work area. The training methods used included interactive lectures, group discussions, case studies, and program development simulations. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests, as well as assessments of program development practices. The results of the activity demonstrated significant improvements in participants' knowledge and skills, particularly in designing annual activity plans based on data and local needs. This training strengthened the capacity of sanitation workers to manage environmental health programs systematically, participatory, and sustainably. It is hoped that this activity will serve as a training model that can be replicated in other community health centers to improve the quality of environmental health services.
