Abstract

Field trips have long been recognized as a significant component of educational endeavours. While students at the primary and secondary levels commonly engage in such activities, the integration of field trips into tertiary education remains infrequent. University studend who attend the English classes are seldom afforded the opportunity to directly observe authentic professional environments or explore potential workplaces related to their future careers, experiences that can be facilitated through field trips. Additionally, given the increasing emphasis on the internship program held by Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, a gap arises as students are limited in their exposure to real-world work environments. The objective of this research endeavour was to investigate university students' perceptions of field trip activities and assess how these experiences contribute to the development of students' autonomous learning skills. Qualitative data for this study were collected through two questionnaires, a preparation and a reflection Google sheet. The participants consisted of 27 students enrolled in the International Relations Study Program at UPN Veteran Jakarta. The findings of the study revealed that field trips offer numerous benefits to English for Professional Purposes students, including enhancing their understanding of academic concepts, providing a deeper real-world context for learning, and fostering social interaction. The questionnaire results demonstrated a predominantly positive perception among the students. Furthermore, a majority of the participants reported engaging in autonomous learning activities during the field trip, facilitated by the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and seek their guidance through questioning.

Abstract

Transnational families in Indonesia currently still have many difficulties in developing and creating an ideology of language use that they implement in their families, with a variety of languages to maintain their family's ethnic identity. This research explores three research questions, as follows. (1) How did parents perceive the roles of various languages in shaping their children's future? (2) What languages were used in the family? This research finds the choice of language use within the context of Indonesian transnational families with different ethnic backgrounds. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design (Yin, 2014), this study employs 2 participants, a woman, and her mother, both of them are scholarship awardees, who negotiate language ideologies, practices, and policies within their families among linguistic diversity and transnational mobility. Through thematic analysis (Saldana, 2012) of data collection from semi-structured interviews and observation, revealed several initial, open, and axial codes. This finding of this research reveals 1). The differences ideology between two generation. 2). The family's efforts to balance maintaining English and Bahasa Indonesia language. The implication of this study is made for the language policy maker and other transnational parent.  In conclusion, this study highlights the complexities of language use in transnational families and demonstrates that these families face challenges and opportunities in creating an environment that supports language learning.

Abstract

In this era of globalization, equipping children with English language skills is very important. Bilingual schools have become a popular choice for parents, as they believe English is important because it is an international language. The English Day program plays a crucial role in creating a learning environment that supports structured language use, fostering a comfortable and enjoyable habit of using English. However, the specific reasons for choosing this school and the contribution of English Day to the linguistic and academic development of children still need to be researched further. Therefore, this research attempts to explore the reasons why parents enroll their children in bilingual schools and how the role of English Day in bilingual schools can help them become more proficient in English. This research uses a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry method. The researcher used semi-structured interviews to collect data and analyzed it using Braun & Clarke's thematic analysis. From The research findings reveal the main motivations that parents enroll their kids in bilingual schools to make sure they learn English, enjoy a stimulating atmosphere, and become ready for college. Initiatives like English Day improve language proficiency, add enjoyment to the learning process, and encourage critical and creative thinking while offering useful real-world experience. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of delving deeper into parents' motivations to inform educational policies and practices; this research can assist parents in making more informed decisions regarding school choices for their children. This research contributes to the understanding of bilingual education choices, highlighting the practical value of English.

Abstract

English language learning in primary schools still needs more attention, especially regarding teacher training in designing effective lesson plans. Many teachers do not have an English language education background and have never received training in designing English language learning activities, so they have difficulty developing materials that meet students' needs. This study aims to determine how primary school teachers develop and implement English language learning activities in the classroom. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The research subjects were two primary school teachers with a classroom teacher education background and teaching experience of 6 and 11 years respectively. The results showed that the teachers developed learning by watching learning videos and consulting with more experienced colleagues as a form of initiative and creativity in dealing with limited competencies and resources. They also face challenges in adapting methods to different student learning styles and managing limited learning time. Observations show that although the implementation of lesson plans is going according to plan, there are still problems with student participation, understanding of the material, and the effectiveness of activities, so adjustments to teaching strategies are needed. This study highlights the importance of sustained and equitable professional development so that all teachers, including those without an English education background, are able to teach adaptively and effectively in diverse classrooms.

Abstract

Rapid growth of studies on Chat-GPT acceptance within the broader context of AI in education (AIEd) has provided valuable insights into how participants across settings perceive and use this tool for teaching and learning. This study replicates earlier investigations on AI acceptance but narrows the focus to a specific task: editing and proofreading. It also expands the inquiry to address ethical concerns and overreliance-two recurring themes in AIEd research. A modified extended TAM questionnaire covering seven aspects was distributed to 71 first-year EFL university students enrolled in a writing course that permitted Chat-GPT only for editing and proofreading, with clear restrictions. Group interviews were also conducted. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; qualitative data were examined thematically. Findings reveal a consistent three-step use of Chat-GPT: prompting, pasting the manuscript, and reviewing. Students treated AI output as a draft for enhancement, not as final work. Variation emerged in how much students revised AI-suggested edits, suggesting differing levels of reliance. The study confirms that perceived usefulness and ease of use contribute to students’ attitudes and intentions, moderated by self-image and subjective norms. While long-term dependency remains unclear, students appeared cautious when boundaries were set. This study suggests that when lecturers provide clear guidelines, students tend to view Chat-GPT as a learning aid and show awareness of academic integrity and authorship. The findings underline the need for well-defined institutional policies on AI use in writing instruction, while acknowledging the study’s contextual limitations and the need for further research.

Abstract

Amidst Covid-19, teachers, and students in many regions are forced to shift to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). This ERT context has attracted researchers to re-investigate dimensions of teaching and learning within this new situation. This paper reports an investigation on the students’ engagement during  ERT in a tertiary EFL setting. Two aspects are highlighted: description of the students’ engagement and its interplay with the choice of teaching-learning platforms.  Questionnaires, interviews, and artifacts were used to collect data. A combination of descriptive statistics and a thematic model of analysis were used to analyze the data. The total respondents of this study were five EFL students in the 6th-grade semester at a university in Surakarta. The researcher employed a case study methodology and use two data, primary data, and secondary data. For the primary data, the researcher used the result of interviews and questionnaires. The secondary data is additional data to get the data. The secondary data which is used is an artifact. The study revealed that all three kinds of engagement: cognitive, behavioral, and emotional, were observed in both high and low bandwidth platforms. This implies that there is another factor other than technology that plays a significant role in engaging the students to learn. Considering the cost and the infrastructure readiness, it is suggested that teachers focus on implementing the principles of good teaching instead of glorifying the use of sophisticated technology. In terms of technology use, it is recommended to choose the one that provides better accessibility and wider access for the students.

Abstract

Current studies provide compelling evidence that project-based learning (PBL) is an effective method for the students. Considering the empirical findings, PBL is highly endorsed in many EFL contexts. However, with the major shift to online learning due the pandemic, little is known about the possibility of PBL implementation within this new context. This current case study attempts to portray the PBL implementation within the online context and how the students perceive the implementation. The study was carried out in an English Education Department involving 36 seventh-grade preservice teachers (PTs). The data were collected through classroom observations, online questionnaires, and in-depth semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using the interactive model and the results of the analysis show the stages of PBL can be implemented in the similar way to that in the offline setting. However, the technological use in the online setting differs in terms of the amount of its usage frequency. The study also revealed that the students consider the implementation of PBL in online setting as challenging yet motivating. The findings imply that the changes of teaching and learning setting do not affect the durability of the PBL. It means that with a little tweak, mainly in terms of technological usage, grouping and group communication, PBL might be successfully implemented in the online setting.
