Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a student worksheet assisted by Stellarium website through a design-thinking framework on the topic of the solar system which is stated to be theoretically feasible based on_validation results by the experts. The development of this student worksheet was carried out because students in seventh grade at one of the State Middle Schools in Bandung experienced obstacles in completing the student worksheet due to lack of time and feel less understanding of the material contained in the student worksheet. This study uses the Design & Development Research with a design-thinking framework consisting of 5 principles, namely empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The initial stage was conducting interviews with 15 students, identifying problems in seventh grade, then making a prototype in the form of student worksheet and validated by experts. Findings indicate that the average overall percentage of validation is 91.9% which means that the student worksheet is included in the very good category, This data also shows that the student worksheet is worthy of being tested in schools with improvements according to the suggestions and input given. However, this student worksheet has not been tested yet, due to limited time, so a trial process needs to be conducted in improving conceptual understanding, increasing interest in learning and developing 21st century skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to assess the enhancement and effectiveness of the ICARE instructional approach, utilising PhET simulations, in augmenting students' cognitive abilities. The study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design utilising a non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique in this study was Convenience sampling involving 68 grade XI students (32 experimental class students and 36 control class students) in one of the public high schools in Bandung City. Student cognitive data was collected using a multiple-choice test instrument consisting of 23 questions designed by the researchers. Data analysis was employed to assess the improvement of cognitive ability through N-Gain calculation. In addition, statistical tests and effect size were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the ICARE learning model based on PhET simulation. The findings indicated that the group implementing the ICARE learning model based on PhET simulation demonstrated a greater cognitive ability enhancement than the group solely utilising the ICARE learning model. Statistical analyses revealed a significant disparity in cognitive ability improvement between students utilising the PhET-based ICARE learning model and those solely employing the ICARE learning model. Furthermore, effect size calculations indicated a notable discrepancy in cognitive ability enhancement between the experimental and control groups, characterised by a high category distinction. Therefore, it can be concluded that research using the ICARE learning model based on PhET simulation effectively improves students' cognitive abilities on dynamic fluid material.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study that describes the learning of chemistry during the Covid-19 pandemic. The respondents in this study were 127 high school students from the West Java and Banten provinces. A Google Form questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results showed that the most widely used online class applications were WhatsApp Group feature, Google Classroom, and Zoom. Students also used printed textbooks, e-books, and student worksheets as learning media. Students did laboratory practice at home using easily found tools and materials. However, a small portion of the respondents (< 11 %) used materials purchased from a chemical store, and another small portion of the respondents (< 14 %) used virtual laboratories. They reported the results of their practice by making a laboratory practice report as well as through video activities and Microsoft PowerPoint for presentation. Students learn from home with varying durations. Most students experienced obstacles during the learning process so that they prefer learning face-to-face in class as usual. Therefore, the teacher must prepare a variety of strategies for distance learning so that the students can learn chemistry from home with fun. Some strategies that can be applied are providing audio-visual learning media or computer/android-based games for chemistry, using the online class application that accommodates interactions similar to face-to-face learning, providing laboratory practice using tools and materials that can be easily found around the house, providing virtual lab application, and providing more opportunities for students to ask questions about chemistry topics that they do not understand.

Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the potential benefits and inherent challenges of employing Virtual Reality (VR) technology as an instructional tool in contemporary educational settings. With an emphasis on understanding teachers' perceptions, the study investigates the difficulties faced during traditional oral teaching and the potential advantages that VR-based pedagogy may bring to the educational environment. The participants of this empirical investigation included 20 educators (11 males and 9 females), who provided their insight on a set of 15 questions specifically designed and later analyzed via Rasch measurement. The Rasch model's assessment provided comprehensive insight into the teaching difficulties experienced by educators and the potential benefits accrued from the application of VR as a teaching aid. The findings indicate that the majority of educators face challenges while instructing through oral methodologies without appropriate pedagogical tools. Conversely, the integration of VR in teaching methods was found to foster students' knowledge acquisition, comprehension, and application in novel situations, augmenting their analytical and evaluative capabilities. VR application was also found to bolster student engagement, motivation, and attention in the learning process. However, despite these promising findings, several obstacles were identified, most notably the cost of VR technology and the requisite technical skills needed for its implementation by educators. The results of this study bear significant implications for future research, particularly as a teaching tool in chemistry. It also prompts a discussion on educators' capacity-building to seamlessly integrate VR technology into existing teaching methodologies.
