Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of project-based learning (PjBL) on students’ motivation in science learning. The participants consisted of 31 eighth-grade students from a public school in Bandung, West Java, comprising 16 male and 15 female students. The research employed a classroom action research design, with data collected through questionnaires and classroom observations. Specifically, students’ motivation was measured using the Students’ Motivation Toward Science Learning (SMTSL) questionnaire, which encompasses six dimensions: self-efficacy, active learning strategies, science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal, and learning environment stimulation. The findings revealed that students’ motivation levels in science learning during Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 were 69% and 68%, respectively, both categorized as “good.” However, the data also indicated a lack of significant improvement in motivation despite the implementation of the PjBL approach. This stagnation suggests that further exploration is needed to understand the underlying factors contributing to the limited impact of PjBL on students' motivational development. Potential areas of inquiry include the quality of project implementation, student engagement dynamics, and contextual factors within the learning environment that may have influenced the outcomes. Abstract

This study analyzed the difficulty level of a science process skills test using the Rasch Model. Conducted with high school students, the study employed a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest assessments to measure changes in nine indicators of science process skills following an educational intervention. The intervention, an e-module on climate change based on place-based education, was integrated into the science curriculum. Results showed significant improvements in students' abilities across all indicators, with initially challenging questions becoming easier post-intervention. These findings underscore the effectiveness of e-modules in enhancing science process skills such as observing, communicating, interpreting, predicting, classifying, asking questions, applying concepts, formulating hypotheses, and planning experiments. The analysis using the Rasch Model indicated a decrease in question difficulty levels from a positive measure value in the pretest (+2.13) to a negative measure value in the posttest (-2.13). The greatest improvements were observed in the indicators for formulating hypotheses (question 8) and planning experiments (question 9), with differences of -7.91 and -7.15, respectively. This study highlights the utility of the Rasch Model in educational assessment and the potential for targeted educational interventions to enhance student performance and learning outcomes in science education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the science teaching materials integrated with ESD and Ethnoscience based on teachers' teaching experiences and educational qualifications. This case study research involved six junior high school science teachers in Cimahi City who participated voluntarily in a teacher training program. Data collection techniques in this research used observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data analysis employed a descriptive narrative approach by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions.  Then, triangulation is also performed for data validation. Based on the research findings, teaching materials prepared by novice teachers with less than five years of teaching experience tend to be textbook-oriented, and the language used still needs to be suitable for the cognitive level of junior high school students. However, the materials they prepared have an attractive appearance. Meanwhile, experienced teachers elaborate and provide contextual examples, using easily understandable language and incorporating tables or graphs to enhance students' literacy and numeracy skills. Out of the six teachers, four have a Biology/ Biology Education background, and two have qualifications in Physics Education at the bachelor's level. Teachers choose teaching materials that align with their educational background because they feel more confident in delivering scientific concepts. Through this research, it is described that teachers still tend to develop teaching materials based on the 2013 curriculum, whereas, at present, the preparation of teaching materials should be aligned with the principles of the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

In the context of classroom-based learning, the majority of students tend to acquire cognitive knowledge. It is essential for students to not only acquire cognitive knowledge but also develop awareness of sustainability as a result of teaching and learning activities. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure sustainability awareness among high school students. Developing an instrument of sustainability awareness for students is important to measure and encourage their understanding and actions in preserving the environment sustainably. The instrument developed consists of three subdimensions: economy, society, and environment. This instrument assesses awareness of the concept of sustainable development and practices, attitudes, and moral values for sustainability at the individual level. This study used the Rasch modeling analysis technique. The instrument is a closed questionnaire containing 21 items using a 4-point Likert scale. The results of the Rasch modeling showed that the overall Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was in the "good" category, while the item reliability coefficient was in the "very good" category. However, the student reliability coefficient was in the "weak" category. The results of the instrument validity test showed four invalid items. These items showed ZSTD and Pt Mean Corr values that did not meet the established criteria. However, the existence of invalid instrument items and weak student reliability coefficients did not affect the overall quality of the instrument. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed instrument is considered appropriate for measuring the sustainability awareness profile of students.
