Abstract

This study aims to explore the aesthetic values of binary gender (femininity and masculinity) within the visual structure of Yogyakarta Panji masks through the lens of semiotics. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a single case study. The object of the study is the Yogyakarta Panji mask, whose visual structure is analysed to uncover symbols that indicate femininity and masculinity values. Data sources include informants, places, events, and documents/archives collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and content analysis. The validity of the data is tested using data source triangulation and informant review techniques. Data analysis is conducted using the flow model of analysis, which involves data reduction, data display, and verification. The results indicate that the visual structure of Yogyakarta Panji masks, when examined through a semiotic framework, contains signs/symbols and values of femininity and masculinity. These values of masculinity and femininity are also embedded in and have been transformed into various cultural artifacts within the context of Javanese culture. The findings highlight that Panji masks not only reflect aesthetic expressions but also serve as cultural signifiers that preserve, communicate, and reinforce traditional Javanese perspectives on gender.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the paradigms of the younger and older generations regarding the commodification process of mask art in Bobung, Yogyakarta. The research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach with a multiple case study design. Data sources included informants, locations, events, and documents/archives collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and content analysis. Data validity was tested using triangulation techniques and informant reviews. Interactive data analysis techniques were employed, involving data reduction, data display, and verification stages. The study findings indicate that the older and younger generations have different perspectives on the preservation and inheritance of mask art in Bobung, Yogyakarta. The older generation believes that the effective preservation of mask art should not alter the cultural order inherited from ancestors over generations. The younger generation, on the other hand, views successful preservation of mask art as needing to adapt to the developments and demands of the times, thus requiring a commodification process. The opposing paradigms, both in practice and theory, can serve as references and foundations for society, academics, practitioners, and the government on how to preserve cultural arts in an ideal and sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of the form, function, and meaning of the Yogyakarta Panji mask style and its relevance to gender identity reconstruction. The research employs a qualitative single-case study strategy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and content analysis of informants, settings, events, and archival documents. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and informant review, while analysis followed a flow model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the Panji mask has undergone transformations in three concrete dimensions. Visually, it has shifted from classical pakem conventions to contemporary designs influenced by wood-batik and tourism aesthetics. Functionally, it has changed from a sacred ritual object into a commodity within the creative economy and cultural tourism. Symbolically, its meaning has expanded from traditional Javanese moral-philosophical values to more contextual interpretations linked to social identity and cultural promotion. These shifts contribute to gender identity reconstruction by enabling more inclusive representations of masculinity and femininity. The evolving visual forms, broader social roles including the increasing involvement of women in mask making and renewed interpretations of Panji and Sekartaji demonstrate how traditional arts can promote more egalitarian gender narratives today.
