Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the influence of maternal factors on stunting in young children aged 24-59 months. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in a subdistrict of Padang. The dependent variable was stunting, and the independent variables were maternal factors. The sample number was 155, and it was collected using stratified and consecutive sampling techniques. Chi-square and logistic regression were applied in data analysis. Results: The study reveals no significant difference between stunted and non-stunted under-five children in terms of the following maternal factors: age at pregnancy, body mass index (BMI), gestational age, upper arm circumference, height, and education. However, both groups showed a significant difference in terms of the number of children (p = 0.041), parenting style (p = 0.006), and knowledge (p = 0.039). Logistic regression analysis showed that mothers who had poor parenting styles had a 3.186 times higher risk of having children with stunting compared to mothers who had good parenting styles (95% CI: 1.382-7.348). Conclusion: The mother's parenting style was the most influential factor in the incidence of stunting among children in Padang City. More effective preventive and intervention measures to overcome the problem of stunting need to pay attention to maternal parenting style, knowledge, and the number of children.

Abstract

The low utilization of antenatal care services has an impact on the condition of the pregnancy not being monitored which will cause danger signs of pregnancy to go undetected and can lead to maternal death. Padang Lawas is the area with the lowest coverage of antenatal care visits in north Sumatra province. The majority of pregnant women in Padang Lawas district do not receive standard antenatal care services. Efforts to increase coverage rates for Antenatal Care visits have been carried out by the Health Service but have not produced any real impact. Objective: This study aims to find out more about the perspective of antenatal care visits for pregnant women. Method: This study was qualitative with a grounded theory approach. The informants in this study were 5 mothers, 5 husbands, 3 midwives, and 1 community figure who were recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using the Content Analysis. Results: The study emerged 4 themes: (1) Culture about pregnancy, (2) Infrastructure in antenatal care, (3) Economic issues, and (4) Mother's behavior in carrying out antenatal care. Conclusions: The findings show that there are several barriers of antenatal care visits in rural maternal communities, so the government needs to pay attention to them in following up on the barriers found in these areas.

Abstract

Background: Empyema is a problem worldwide due to its high incidence, mortality, and morbidity rates. So, administering antibiotics is mandatory to treat the disease. It should be sensitive to the causal microorganisms and avoid resistant ones for treatment efficacy. This research aimed to determine bacterial profile and antimicrobial resistance, which can be fundamental foundations for clinical practices in the treatment of patients, especially in Pekanbaru. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study from medical records at Arifin Achmad and Eka Hospitals from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2022, including culture and antibiotic resistance test results with samples from pleural fluid and antibiotic susceptibility test using VITEK 2.0.Results: A total of 197 pleural fluid specimens were obtained. Gram-negative bacteria were found to be the most prevalent at 79.7%, namely Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.5%), Escherichia coli (12.0%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.0%). Gram-positive bacteria were found at 12.2%, the most common being Staphylococcus aureus (6.1%) and Enterococcus faecalis (2.0%). Antibiotic sensitivity tests for Gram-negative bacteria showed that amikacin and tigecycline were the most sensitive, and Gram-positive bacteria showed the most sensitivity to linezolid, tigecycline, and vancomycin. The resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli to cephalosporins was 18.5% and 75.0%, respectively. The resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to carbapenems was 8.0%, 13.0%, and 53.0%, respectively. Conclusion: Gram-negative is the most common microorganism found in pleural empyema. The resistance of multiresistant bacteria to antibiotics is high and requires supervision to apply appropriate antibiotic administration based on local antimicrobial patterns and the need to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship programs.
