Abstract

This study presents analysis by the increasing interest of adults in learning Arabic, but they still face various obstacles such as limited time, low motivation to learn, and limited access to flexible learning media. This study aims to analyze the use of the Memrise application as a medium for learning Arabic vocabulary using an andragogical approach. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were adult beginners who have never studied Arabic and have used the Memrise app for 14 days. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that Memrise is effective for adult learners because it supports independent, flexible, and adaptive learning processes. Features such as native speaker audio, spaced repetition, and gamification help with vocabulary retention and learning motivation. User score documentation shows consistent daily improvement, reflecting the success of independent and continuous learning. Furthermore, the vocabulary material presented is relevant to the context of learners' daily lives, thereby accelerating the process of internalizing meaning. Despite the limitations of the free version's features, learners can still maximize the learning process. This study concludes that Memrise is a relevant digital learning medium for adult learners in mastering Arabic vocabulary in a practical and sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the mispronunciation of the consonant /f/ in Arabic by Javanese Speakers (JS), Sundanese Speakers (SS) and Batak Speakers (BS). The focus is on the sound /f/ as it can shift to /p/ when spoken by speakers of various L1 languages. Javanese, Sundanese, and Batak were chosen because of their prominence in Indonesia. Using a descriptive-evaluative-comparative approach, the researchers analyzed the pronunciation of /f/ by JS, SS, BS, contrasted with a native speaker (NS), Sheikh Misyari bin Rasyid Al-'Afasi. The research data was in the form of sound recordings of the recitation of nine verses of the Quran with the sound /f/, collected using the listen-record-pay-attention technique and analyzed acoustically through Praat. The findings reveal phonetic interference in pronouncing/f/ at the beginning, middle, and end of words by SS and BS. In JS, it only occurs at the beginning and the end. The absence of sound /f/ in the phonological system of local languages can cause this interference. The implication lies in learning to listen and speak Arabic, helping to design strategies to overcome pronunciation errors when encountering foreign sounds in the learner's phonological system.

Abstract

This study examines the learning outcomes of Arabic language learning during and after the COVID-19 pandemic at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Inayah in Bandung City, Indonesia. Qualitative research methods, including interviews, observations and documentation, were used to analyze the effectiveness of learning methods and factors influencing student learning outcomes. Purposive sampling was employed to select 15 ninth-grade students studying Arabic. The findings of the study reveal several important points. First, there were differences in the learning situation between home and school. Students must help understand Arabic material during online learning and catch up when returning to face-to-face classes. Second, students preferred to learn at school due to a more engaging and interactive environment, while online learning was associated with distractions and reduced motivation. Third, students perceived online methods as monotonous and less effective than post-pandemic methods. Fourth, various learning media were utilized during online learning. Additionally, students reported that even the online platforms couldn't help them study the Arabic language. The study emphasizes the importance of interactive and engaging methods to enhance student learning outcomes. The results contribute to a broader understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Education and provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers.
