Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease and still a health problem in the world. Melatonin is responsible to metabolize carbohydrate and regulate blood sugar levels. Several studies proved Melatonin is useful in the diabetes therapy and its complication by performing antioxidant activity through various signaling pathways. The role of the melatonin hormone in the pathogenesis of complications of diabetes mellitus is still a lot of controversy. Animal studies are still incomplete to explain the mechanism of action of melatonin. Therefore, this review aims to discuss Melatonin role administration in DM and its complications. This review was started by searching articles using electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, SpringerLink and Pubmed between 2009-2019. Melatonin increased respiration within mitochondria; acted as antioxidant that fight free radical production; and reduced oxidative stress. It diminished proinflammatory cytokines in diabetes and prevents various DM complications on eyes, cardiac and male reproductive organs through antioxidant effects. It inhibited proinflammatory within several signaling Pathways, included PI3K/Akt-Nrf2,cGMP-PKG, Nrf-2-HO-1 and MAPK, Syk, p38MAPK pathways. There are various melatonin roles in diabetes and DM complications as a promising new breakthrough of DM treatment. It is necessary to explore Melatonin role in other DM complications. Most of this research is on experimental animals, thus clinical trial studies should be carried out in humans to make melatonin a promising therapeutic or prevention for diabetes and its complications in the future

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) often give a macrovascular complication such as Peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a sensitive and specific examination for PAD. Obesity can be a risk factor of PAD. Obesity can be classified by the BMI (Body Mass Index) classification. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship of BMI with ABI in Type 2 DM (T2DM) patients of Javanese ethnicity. This study was an observational analytic research with case-control design and used a purposive sampling technique. There were 40 case samples and 40 control samples. Data analysis used the Independent T-test and Chi-square test. There was a significant differences on age (p=0,000), METs (p-value=0,003), and ABI (p-value=0,002) between the two groups. In the DM group was found that most abnormal ABIs were found in the higher BMI, even though there was no significant correlation by the statistic (p-value=0,255). BMI contributed less to the ABI value of Javanese ethnic T2DM patients.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia is a condition when the blood glucose levels exceed normal levels. Hyperglycemia can lead to the occurrence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The use of natural ingridients in lowering blood glucose levels has been carried out. However, studies on the benefits of lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta) in reducing blood glucose levels have never been reported. This research aims to analyze the effect of administration lesser yam extract to hyperglycemic rats. Data were collected using experimental laboratoris pre-post test randomized design. Data were analysed using analysis of variance one way statistical test and advanced Tukey. Lesser yam contains Inulin as PLA (Water Soluble Polysaccharide) which serves to inhibit gastric emptying thus it can help manage a diet of people with hyperglycemic. The results obtained by the control group (not given treatment) shows no change in fasting blood glucose levels intesting as well as post prandial. The administration of lesser yam extract affects blood glucose levels to decreased in hyperglycemic rats in all groups. Significant decrease occurs in the testing conditions of first, second and third day post prandial group. The decrease is caused by the influence of the extracts after 2 hours of administration. Lesser yam (DioscoreahispidaDennst) is capable of lowering blood glucose levels of hyperglycemic rats in post prandial condition.

Abstract

Implementing COVID-19 Community Activity Restrictions (Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat/PPKM) affects community activities, including type-2 Diabetes mellitus patients in Demak Regency. BMI and HbA1c are risk factors for increased blood glucose levels of DM type 2. This research aims to determine the impact of corvid-19 PPKM against BMI, Glucose Levels, and HbA1c in Type 2 DM Patients in Demak Regency. This study used secondary data from the Chronic Disease Management Program (PROLANIS) in three health centers (Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat/Puskesmas) in Demak Regency. Which was grouped into measurements before PPKM (October 2019 and February 2020), the PPKM period (August 2021), and the end of PPKM (March 2022). The complete variables were incorporated into the final analysis. A total of 164 respondents were spread across in Wonosalam 1 (n=64), Bonang 2 (n=49), and Wedung 1 (n=51).  The results of the Analysis of Friedman and the Wilcoxon post hoc showed that there was an influence of COVID-19 PPKM on Glucose Levels (p= 0.000) and HbA1c (p = 0.000). There was no influence on BMI (p = 0.108) in Dm Type 2 patients in Demak Regency, meaning on the variable levels of FBS and HbA1c, there are at least two different measurements in October 2019, February 2020, August 2021, and March 2022 measurements.  Special attention is needed in DM patients to control changes in BMI, Glucose levels, and HbA1c during the implementation of COVID-19 PPKM.

Abstract

Background: Complementary Feeding Practice is an important factor for the fulfilment of children’s nutritional needs. Due to the nutritional imbalance between the energy and nutrient needed by infants and what provided by breastmilk, therefore it should be fulfilled by comple- mentary feeding. One third of toddlers worldwide are in developing countries who obtain adequate complementary feeding, with a standard frequency and variety. Meanwhile, in Indonesia two third or most of the children aged 0-24 months do not obtain appropriate complementary food. The study aims to develop “Ibu Pintar” Bookmic, a media which is valid and effective to improve maternal knowledge and attitude in appropriate complementary feeding practice. Subjects and Method: The design of the study used 2 methods. The first method was Research and Development to collect user data and subsequently generated a product that can be utilized to improve knowledge and attitude of mothers of toddlers. The second method was quasi expe- rimental design conducted before and after the study without any comparison to apply Paired Sample T-Test by using SPSS. Results: The result indicated that after the treatment with “Ibu Pintar” Bookmic maternal knowledge in complementary feeding practice was improved (Mean= 1.42; SD= 0.67) compared to maternal knowledge in complementary feeding practice before the treatment (Mean= 0.66; SD; 0.77), and the result was statistically significant (p < 0.001). After the treatment with “Ibu Pintar” Bookmic maternal attitude in complementary feeding practice was improved (Mean= 0.76; SD= 0.43) compared to maternal attitude in complementary feeding practice before the treatment (Mean= 0.44; SD; 0.50), and the resulf was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion: “Ibu Pintar” Bookmic is effective for maternal knowledge and attitude in complementary feeding practice. Keywords: knowledge, attitude, and complementary food. Correspondence: Fifty K. Abstract

Background: Balanced nutrition for mothers during breastfeeding is closely related to breast milk production, puerperal recovery, and other influences on the sustainability of the puerperal or breastfeeding mother. The thing that needs to concern is that if the nutrition for breastfeeding mothers is not met, the nutritional needs for breast milk production will be taken from the mothers’ body reserves. This condition will cause the mother to experience the risk of disease and chronic malnutrition. This study aims to develop the "Segi Busui" Booklet media and to determine the effectiveness of the "Segi Busui" booklet media toward knowledge and attitude concerning balanced nutrition in breastfeeding mothers of 0-6 months babies. Subjects and Method: The method used in the study was Research and Development (RnD) using the Borg and Gall model. The type of study used to determine the effectiveness was pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study was 48 breastfeeding mothers of 0-6 months babies. The dependent variables were knowledge and attitudes. The independent variable was the booklet “Segi Busui". The data were collected using questionnaires. The analysis technique used was the Wilcoxon test. Results: The average score of maternal knowledge increased after (Mean= 19.65; SD= 0.93) the "Segi Busui" booklet intervention compared to before the intervention (Mean= 13.06; SD= 1.74), and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). Meanwhile, the maternal attitude score increased after (Mean= 66.71; SD= 3.48) the "Segi Busui" booklet intervention compared to before the intervention (Mean= 53.60; SD= 5.93), and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001) Conclusion: The “Segi Busui" booklet media is effective in increasing knowledge and attitudes concerning balanced nutrition in breastfeeding mothers of 0-6 months babies. Abstract

Biosorption is a new waste treatment technology that can eliminate toxic heavy metals. Biosorption can be considered as an environmentally friendly alternative technology to treat industrial liquid waste that is economically proper to use. One of them is biosorption that utilizes the microorganisms’ absorption ability, especially bacteria that can absorb heavy metals in waters, such as Enterobacter agglomerans. This research aimed to determine the ability of E. agglomerans in reducing heavy metals pollution in local river. The research employed the measurement of the effect of lead (Pb) to E. agglomerans growth using Optical Density (OD) at wavelength 600 nm. The colony numbers were calculated using a standard curve. While the ability of E. agglomerans to reduce heavy metals concentration in liquid media was measured using AAS with a wavelength of 240 nm. The results showed that lead affected the growth of E. agglomerans. The OD value has a negative relationship with the concentration level of Pb. The ODs were decreased from 2.867 to 1.242, using Pb level from 0 ppm to 20 ppm. Therefore, it proved that E. agglomerans could reduce heavy metals concentration in local river in Central Java Province. This research was the first report on E. agglomerans activity on heavy metal in contaminated water. This result can be used as a reference for industrial sites near the river to treat their wastewater before discharging it to the river body to preserve its water purity.
