Abstract

Scientific communication is defined as verbal communication that is related to investigation. Science learning has an important part in the scientific communication skills that learners must have, which involves a scientific approach whose stages include observing, questioning, collecting data, evaluating data, and expressing conclusions. Scientific communication has an important role to be mastered by learners to succeed in science disciplines. This study aims to identify STEM-SDGs-based Students’ Worksheets used by students in supporting scientific communication skills on temperature, heat, and expansion material and analyze the scientific communication skills of junior high school students in discussing SDGs issues related to temperature, heat, and expansion. The method in this research uses a qualitative approach with a single case study research type. This research was conducted at MTSN 2 Jember in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 school year. The results showed that the application of STEM-SDGs-based Students’ Worksheets played a role in improving students' scientific communication skills. This is because the STEM-SDGs-based Students’ Worksheets has been prepared by 25% to support each indicator. The STEM approach that integrates various disciplines encourages students to actively participate and discuss, thus strengthening their understanding of complex scientific concepts. Based on the analysis of students' scientific communication skills after using the STEM-SDGs-based Students’ Worksheets, it was found that the highest student condition was in the fourth indicator, namely representation form (86%) with a very good category. While the lowest student condition in the third indicator, namely the use of scientific terms (code), which tends to be low with a deficient category (72%). The interview results show that students understand concepts related to SDGs and can explain scientific phenomena, but still use colloquial language rather than appropriate scientific terms.        Keywords: scientific communication, STEM, SDGs, temperature, heat, expansion.

Abstract

The Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) model synthesises problem-based, project-based, and contextual learning approaches into an integrative pedagogical framework. Ethnoscience connects indigenous knowledge systems with scientific inquiry and provides cultural relevance to science education. This study focuses on the gold and silver craftsmanship of Pulo Village in Tempeh Subdistrict—a generational practice rooted in local ethnoscientific traditions, where artisans employ empirically derived metallurgical techniques. By embedding these indigenous practices into CBL, the research investigates how ethnoscience-informed pedagogy enhances junior high school students' creative thinking skills in understanding temperature, heat, and thermal expansion. Quasi-experimental research followed a posttest-only control group design and was conducted using a purposive sampling technique in the 7th grade at SMPN 7 Tempeh, Lumajang, Indonesia. Primary data was a creative thinking skills posttest, while secondary data was interviews and documentation. Sample data were analysed using homogeneity and normality tests using Kolmogorov-Smirnov. The data proved normal, so the hypothesis test used the Independent Sample T-test. The results obtained showed that there was an effect of creative thinking on students with a two-sample t-test value of significance (2-tailed) (0.003 ≤ 0.05) and the right-tailed t-test, which obtained the value of tcount> ttable (3.097> 2.005). It was concluded that this study, with the application of the ethnoscience-based Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) approach, will influence the improvement of the creative thinking of junior high school students. In the CBL, the learners would collaboratively compose their ideas to solve problems and adjust some results to strengthen creative thinking skills aligned with culturally relevant real-world challenges.      Keywords: challenge-based learning, ethnoscience, creative thinking skills.

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) become important key factors for producing qualified graduates and supporting creativity and innovation. The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program stive to link and match between higher education graduates is not only with the business world and the industrial world but also with rapidly changing future. The research subjects were outbound and inbound student exchange. Qualitative data is used to determine the students perceptions in learning activities at Science Education Study Program. Learning activities by inbound student at UNEJ used as making material in power point slides (ppt) for group presentations, discussing material and analyzing videos. In UNNES, outbound students get project assignments, progress and presentation in virtual meeting. Outbound students to UM are divided into several small groups to prepare papers, power points (ppt slide), video presentations and discussion through Sipejar. Keywords: learning perception, student exchange and student mobility. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp740-750
