Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The agricultural sector is the primary source of livelihood for communities in Southeast Asia; however, these activities increase the risk of exposure to zoonotic diseases, particularly leptospirosis. Southeast Asia is one of the regions with the highest incidence of leptospirosis in the world. This literature review aims to identify risk factors for leptospirosis among agricultural workers in Southeast Asia. The search for research articles utilized three databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect) using a descriptive approach based on literature review and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 9,800 articles were screened for duplicates, publication year (2016–2025), open access, English language, and analytical study design, leaving 459 articles. These articles were then screened based on exclusion criteria (review articles and those irrelevant to the keywords), resulting in 253 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. These articles were further reviewed based on relevant populations and outcomes, resulting in 10 articles to be included in the literature review. The findings of this study revealed variations in risk factors across countries, including the presence of livestock, the presence of waste in the work environment, and the habit of not using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Based on the findings, there is a publication gap in Southeast Asian countries regarding leptospirosis risk factors among agricultural workers, thus necessitating further research in other Southeast Asian countries. Abstract

Hypertension, a chronic disease, remains a leading cause of global illness and death. Medication adherence is critical for managing hypertension, yet poor adherence is common. This systematic review evaluated how community empowerment and self-management education influence medication adherence in adults with hypertension. Using PRISMA guidelines, the review identified studies published in English from 2015 to 2025 in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus, focusing on adult hypertensive populations and reporting adherence outcomes. Studies without educational or empowerment interventions were excluded. Two reviewers independently selected and assessed the quality of studies. Of 443 articles, six met the criteria. Results showed that structured self-management education, especially with personalized support and follow-up, significantly improved medication adherence. Community empowerment strategies, including family involvement, peer support, and engagement with local health workers, further enhanced motivation and long-term adherence. These findings highlight the importance of integrating self-management and community-based interventions into hypertension care. Such approaches may strengthen public health programs, promote sustained treatment adherence, and reduce hypertension-related complications. The review’s evidence supports prioritizing these strategies for better health outcomes. This review was not prospectively registered.

Abstract

Lymphatic filariasis is a chronic infectious disease caused by filarial worms and transmitted to humans through the bites of various mosquito species in tropical and subtropical environments. In Indonesia, Simbang Kulon sub-district is categorized as a filariasis endemic area based on the results of finger blood surveys (SDJ), but research on entomological surveys is rare. This study aims to conduct an entomological survey (identifying and understanding the bionomics) of mosquitoes as filariasis vectors in Simbang Kulon Sub-district, Buaran District, Pekalongan Regency, Central Java Province. This study used a descriptive survey with a cross-sectional design. Mosquito capture was carried out using the Human Landing Collection and Resting Collection methods both inside and outside the house. Samples were taken to the laboratory. The results of the identification of 50 mosquitoes found 94% Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes and 6% Culex vishnui mosquitoes. The blood-sucking activity of Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex vishnui in the research area is eksophagic, while the resting behavior of Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex vishnui in the research area is more outdoor resting. Peak fluctuations in blood-sucking and resting activity in Culex quinquefasciatus inside and outside the house are generally at 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM. Based on the results of the research data analysis, Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes are a potential vector mosquito species of filariasis in Simbang Kulon Village, Pekalongan Regency

Abstract

Tuberculosis which shows resistance to various types of drugs poses a significant burden in efforts to prevent and control tuberculosis globally. Since 2020, guidelines from the WHO have recommended a shorter treatment with an all-oral regimen for Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB), with the inclusion of bedaquiline instead of an injectable agent. However, the treatment success rate for DR-TB in Indonesia is still low. This study aimed to determine factors contributing to unsuccessful DR-TB treatment using STR in Central Java. This was a nested case-control study of 412 DR-TB patients enrolled with a Short-Term Regimen, registered in 2021 to 2023 who had treatment results in a subset of the Tuberculosis Information System cohort data. Independent variables analyzed included age, gender, patient employment status, history of previous TB treatment, DM status, HIV status, resistance pattern, initial sputum examination results, drug side effects, treatment initiation interval, body mass index, and BPJS ownership status. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22 software, with logistic regression analysis to identify the determinants. The determinant of unsuccessful treatment outcome in Central Java Province which is 51.04% was the positive results of initial sputum examination of treatment (aOR=10.501; 95%CI=5.056-21.807), drug side effects (aOR=1.853; 95%CI=1,000-3.436), obesity (aOR=3.115; 95%CI=1.188-8.166) and BPJS non-possession status (aOR=2.213; 95%CI=0.932-5.255). More strategies are needed to improve the success of treatment with STR.

Abstract

Malaria is a communicable disease that poses a serious problem in Papua New Guinea, with the country recording the highest incidence of malaria in the Asia-Pacific region each year. However, research on the risk factors for malaria in Papua New Guinea is still minimal, especially among pregnant women. This study aims to investigate the correlation between malaria incidence in pregnant women in Papua New Guinea. This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional approach conducted on 200 pregnant women from January to March 2024 in Abou District, Papua New Guinea. Data collection used questionnaires and Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) to diagnose malaria infection in pregnant women. The independent variables in this study are healthcare-seeking behavior, prevention of malaria, knowledge of malaria, maternal age, marital status, occupation, education level, and residential location. The dependent variable in this study is the incidence of malaria in pregnant women. In this study, the data analysis used included univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with chi-square, and multivariate analysis with logistic regression. The results showed that the risk factors for malaria incidence in pregnant women in Papua New Guinea are malaria prevention (p-value 0.014; OR= 4.426) and healthcare-seeking behavior (p-value 0.033; OR= 4.033), meaning that pregnant women with poor malaria prevention behavior and poor healthcare-seeking behavior are four times more likely to suffer from malaria. It is hoped that pregnant women will increase their awareness of malaria prevention during pregnancy and make full use of healthcare facilities during pregnancy.
