Abstract

Authentic assessment holds a crucial role in modern biology education as it supports competency-based evaluations that enable students to apply scientific knowledge in real-world settings. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of research trends on authentic assessment in biology learning using data from the Scopus database. Employing a quantitative approach, the study analyzed the temporal distribution, international collaboration, dominant keywords, and thematic evolution from 39 selected articles through tools such as co-authorship network analysis, keyword co-occurrence mapping, and thematic evolution analysis. Results indicated a significant rise in publications since 2018, peaking during the COVID-19 pandemic due to shifts in assessment methods for online learning. The disciplinary distribution showed a predominance of social sciences (26.1%) intersecting with biology and environmental science. The United States and the UK emerged as leading contributors, with support from institutions like the National Science Foundation. Keyword analysis identified two major clusters: animal-based assessment (motor theme) and molecular biology (emerging theme). However, the literature showed limited representation from developing countries and minimal exploration of advanced technologies. This study contributes by (1) mapping scientific developments in authentic assessment research, (2) offering a bibliometric analysis protocol applicable to similar areas, and (3) suggesting future directions including global collaboration, validation of long-term instruments, and focus on niche topics like biodiversity-based assessments. The findings offer practical implications for designing context-responsive assessment guidelines. Nonetheless, the study is constrained by its reliance on Scopus and English-language sources, potentially excluding other relevant contributions.

Abstract

Holistic performance assessment is an assessment approach that focuses not only on work outcomes, but also on the process, potential, and personality and social aspects of employees in the context of basic education. This study aims to analyze the application of holistic performance assessment as an instrument for employee competency development at SDN Rampal Celaket 1 Malang City. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation of school principals, teachers, and education staff. The results of the study show that holistic performance assessment is able to provide a comprehensive picture of employee performance through the integration of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. The application of this assessment contributes to the improvement of employees' professional, pedagogic, social, and personality competencies through reflective feedback and continuous development planning. In addition, the assessment process involving active participation between assessors and employees encourages a collaborative, transparent, and work-oriented work culture that is oriented towards improving the quality of educational services. The main obstacle found is the limited understanding and consistency of the implementation of assessments in the field, so continuous training and assistance are needed for schools. Thus, holistic performance assessment can be used as a strategic instrument in educational human resource management to build adaptive, reflective, and competitive employee competencies, in line with the demands of 21st century education transformation.

Abstract

Variations in institutional quality indicate the absence of a coherent and standardized framework for defining school excellence. Muhammadiyah has extensive contribution schools in Indonesia. Offers an integrative Outstanding School Model of Muhammadiyah as a strategic framework for achieving a golden standard in future-oriented education. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of Islamic values and future competencies into a unified Outstanding School Model of Muhammadiyah, which is further aligned with a real-world school evaluation system to establish a standardized framework for educational excellence. This study employs a qualitative design-based approach by integrating systematic literature review and document analysis to develop an Outstanding School Model of Muhammadiyah. The findings reveal that, although the MFS instrument is structurally comprehensive, it remains conceptually fragmented. Through thematic and quantitative analysis, its components are reorganized into four core dimensions: academic excellence, Islamic character (Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan), future skills, and institutional quality. The results also indicate an imbalance in indicator distribution, with a strong emphasis on institutional aspects and limited integration of future-oriented competencies. The transformation of an existing evaluation system into a coherent and integrative framework that aligns Islamic educational values with global competencies. Furthermore, the model is aligned with SDG 4 Quality Education, reinforcing its relevance within global educational discourse. This study contributes by providing a standardized reference for improving school quality and guiding the development of Muhammadiyah education toward a sustainable and future-ready paradigm.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of integrating Self-Directed Learning (SDL) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing students' scientific reasoning skills in biology education. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed, combining a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design with qualitative exploration. The participants were 30 undergraduate students in biology education. Quantitative data were collected using a scientific reasoning test, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and reflective writings. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ scientific reasoning scores (p < 0.001) with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.35). Qualitative findings indicated that learning independence, authentic problem-solving, metacognitive reflection, and scientific collaboration contributed to this improvement. The integration of SDL and PjBL fosters a student-centered learning environment that supports cognitive and metacognitive development. This study offers an integrated pedagogical model and practical implications for enhancing higher-order thinking skills in biology education. Abstract

Salmonella typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever, has increasingly developed resistance to conventional antibiotics, necessitating research into alternative antimicrobial agents. Moringa oleifera L. is a medicinal plant rich in phytochemical compounds including flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids with documented antibacterial properties. This study examined the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of moringa leaves against S. typhi growth, and evaluated the validity and practicality of a monograph developed from these experimental findings for undergraduate microbiology education. Using a True Experimental Research design with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), the antibacterial activity was assessed through the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method at concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%, with Aztreonam as positive control. The monograph development followed the 4-D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Results demonstrated that all extract concentrations significantly inhibited S. typhi growth (p = 0.000), with the highest inhibition zone diameter of 14.18 mm at 100% concentration, classified as strong inhibition. Higher concentrations consistently produced larger inhibition zones, indicating a dose-dependent antibacterial effect. The developed monograph achieved validity scores of 91.67% (content expert) and 92.85% (media expert), both categorized as valid. Practicality testing with 14 students yielded a score of 87.93%, indicating the monograph is highly practical for use in microbiology courses. These findings confirm moringa leaf extract as a promising natural antibacterial agent and establish its viability as research-based educational material.
