Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition remains a persistent challenge for EFL learners across different educational systems, making effective learning strategies essential for academic success. This study examines Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by undergraduate English students in Indonesia and Pakistan focusing on differences influenced by educational and cultural contexts. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data was collected through a closed-ended questionnaire from 114 students across seven universities. The questionnaire, adapted from Goundar (2019) and based on Gu and Johnson's (1996) framework, categorized VLS into meta cognitive, cognitive, memory, and activation strategies. Data analysis using SPSS included descriptive statistics, normality tests, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Kruskal-Wallis analysis. The results revealed significant differences in VLS preferences, with cognitive strategies being the most dominant in both groups. However, Pakistani students demonstrated higher meta cognitive strategy use than their Indonesian counterparts. These findings highlight the impact of educational systems on VLS selection. The study suggests incorporating meta cognitive and activation strategies into language learning curricula to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social media in shaping the learning behavior and social interactions of junior high school students. The phenomenon of high social media use among adolescents has prompted the need for an in-depth study of its influence on the learning process and social relations in schools. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving students and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Kebakkramat as informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that social media, particularly TikTok, WhatsApp, and Instagram, have become a routine part of students' lives. However, their utilization in learning remains low because students primarily use them for entertainment. The positive impact of social media is seen in easy access to information and accelerated communication, while the dominant negative impacts include distraction, decreased learning focus, and potential conflict in social interactions. The study also found that school policies regarding social media use are still advisory in nature and therefore unable to optimally direct students' digital behavior. This study confirms that social media plays a dual role as a learning and social space, but digital literacy and more systematic supervision are needed so that its use brings more benefits to students.

Abstract

The quality of graduates is a vital indicator of the success of educational institutions, especially for Private Junior High Schools (SMP) operating in a competitive environment that demands high accountability and comparative advantage. The role of School Principal Leadership is believed to be the main determining factor that mediates efforts to improve this quality. This research aims to empirically analyze and measure the influence of School Principal Leadership on the improvement of graduate quality in private SMPs, encompassing both academic and non-academic aspects. This study employed a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto survey design and sampled 30 accredited Private SMPs in the [Specify Study Area] region. Respondents consisted of 30 School Principals and 180 Teachers selected through the Simple Random Sampling technique from each sampled school. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure the School Principal Leadership variable (Transformational and Instructional dimensions) and the Graduate Quality Improvement variable (teacher perception), supported by objective documentation data (exam scores and student acceptance into leading schools). Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression tests after ensuring that the prerequisite analysis tests (Normality and Homoskedasticity) were met. School Principal Leadership, particularly through transformational practices focused on teacher motivation and empowerment, is a key determinant in achieving improved graduate quality in Private SMPs. Schools are advised to prioritize the development of transformational and instructional leadership capacity to ensure excellent graduates in both academics and character.

Abstract

The influence of artificial intelligence (AI)-based deep learning and digital technologies on students’ entrepreneurial creativity, with digital literacy as a moderating variable, is the focus of this study. The research background is grounded in the increasing level of digital skills possessed by students and the growing role of AI technologies in vocational education, particularly in fostering entrepreneurial creativity as a critical competency in the digital economy era. A quantitative method was employed with a sample of 180 students from SMK Negeri 4 Klaten, who were surveyed through a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal that AI-based deep learning and digital technologies in education have a positive and significant impact on students’ entrepreneurial creativity. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS. Digital literacy not only directly affects creativity but also significantly moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial creativity, digital technology, and deep learning. More than 50% of the variability in entrepreneurial creativity can be explained by the model, as indicated by an R-square value of 0.546. These results demonstrate that digital literacy and smart technologies are strategic factors in enhancing students’ entrepreneurial creativity. The study further highlights the need to strengthen digital literacy and integrate AI into vocational learning. It also provides important implications for the development of technology-based entrepreneurship curriculam.

Abstract

This study explores the patterns and functions of code-switching in Instagram captions by Audrey Fanny Aulia, an Indonesian beauty influencer. As social media increasingly reflects the everyday language practices of bilingual users, code-switching has become a key strategy in digital communication. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research analyzes 30 captions posted between September 2024 and June 2025. The analysis applied Poplack’s typology of code-switching—intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching and the communicative function framework of Appel and Muysken, which includes expressive, referential, directive, phatic, and metalinguistic functions. The findings reveal that inter-sentential code-switching appears most frequently, followed by intra-sentential and tag-switching. Regarding functions, the expressive and referential functions were found to be the most common, indicating that the influencer often switches languages to express emotions and connect more closely with her audience. These results suggest that code-switching on social media serves not only as a linguistic feature but also as a communicative strategy to enhance engagement and personal expression. The study highlights how bilingual influencers like Audrey use language performatively to construct and negotiate identity in digital spaces. It contributes to a broader understanding of multilingual discourse in informal online contexts and offers insight into language use in today’s influencer culture.

Abstract

Digital communication has increased the use of code-mixing among social media users, such as on Instagram. This research examines Indonesian-English code-mixing found in both captions and comments of three popular Indonesian bilingual content creators. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, 50 instances of code-mixing were identified and analyzed over a 4-month observation period. Each instance was thoroughly examined and categorized according to Muysken’s (2000) typology, which includes insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. In addition, the underlying motivations for code-mixing were analyzed using Holmes’ (1992) motivational framework. Results show that insertion form (40%), followed by alternation (32%) and congruent lexicalization (28%). Motivationally, prestige and affective expression were the most salient factors, indicating that English serves both as a marker of status and as a means to connect emotionally with followers. Unlike previous studies that focused only on captions or product-promotion discourse, this research combines the classification of code-mixing types (Muysken, 2000) and motivational analyses (Holmes, 1992) across both captions and comments, providing a more comprehensive understanding of bilingual interaction in digital communication.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores educational sociology in the AI era, focusing on the intersection of learning innovation and digital inequality in elementary education. While rapid advancements in artificial intelligence offer new avenues for adaptive, interactive, and personalized learning, their implementation across elementary schools remains highly uneven. This disparity is driven by gaps in internet access, device availability, teacher competence, student digital literacy, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design through library research, this study gathered data from scientific articles, books, policy documents, and institutional reports, which were then evaluated using content analysis. The findings reveal that although AI effectively assists teachers in curriculum design, assessment, and student engagement, digital inequality hinders the fair distribution of these benefits. Viewed through the lens of educational sociology, this gap reflects the reproduction of social inequality via unequal access to resources—where well-funded schools successfully adopt AI while under-resourced ones lag. Consequently, integrating AI in elementary schools requires systematic support through infrastructure equity, teacher training, student literacy programs, and inclusive policies.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of religious culture and analyze its role in building students’ social integration at SD Muhammadiyah Plus Semarang. This research was motivated by the importance of strengthening students’ social character amid increasing social problems such as low tolerance, social awareness, and cooperation in elementary school environments. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of the principal, teachers, and students selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation, while data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that religious culture was implemented through religious habituation activities, teacher role modeling, and the creation of a religious school environment. The implementation contributed to the development of tolerance, cooperation, discipline, social awareness, and mutual respect among students. Religious culture also played a role in creating harmonious social relationships through collective activities that strengthened togetherness and social solidarity among students. This study confirms that religious culture not only functions to shape students’ spiritual character but also serves as a medium for internalizing social values in building students’ social integration in elementary schools.
