Abstract

Literature is inseparable from the culture of its intrinsic and extrinsic meanings. It is proved on wabi-sabi, as finding simple perfectness in imperfectness, which has been embraced by Japanese people since 13th century. Carp is a short story by Ibuse Masuji that underlines uneasiness to let go a deceased person that has been befriended with for a long time. The fish of carp is a symbol of despair, but then it changes to a hope when the main character makes up his mind to be sincere in allowing his deceased friend to go. Then, how is wabi-sabi perpetuated on Ibuse Masuji’s Carp? Through qualitative method on cultural studies, this paper highlights condition of wabi-sabi as underlined in that story. Perfectness could not be found if any imperfectness is not well-appreciated. Any happiness could not be found if sadness is still held tightly. Appreciating death means knowing how valuable life is. The fish in this story is not merely an animal, but symbol of belonging that should be let go as the real owners has passed away too. In conclusion, wabi-sabi is exposed in this short story to tell how death is about imperfectness, but the freedom beyond any life is the perfection itself.

Abstract

This article underlines the expressions of fear in Sofia Samatar’s flash fiction entitled The Huntress. The fear felt by the townspeople was thick, the darkness and silence merged. The moon was shining, everyone had their windows shut tight, and a brave man had come to visit the town. The silence is in line with a frightening situation in the story of The Huntress by Sofia Samatar. This paper would like to answer the question of how may fear be accentuated in Sofia's Samatar's The Huntress? Through qualitative method with cultural studies approach in the theory of myth by Claude Levi-Strauss, this paper locates expressions of fear, darkness, and courage in a story of The Huntress by Sofia Samatar. Darkness expresses the threat and disgrace experienced by the townspeople, the hunters are like a feared tenor lion, but then comes a young stranger who calls for courage in the townspeople. The fear of the townspeople is such a socio-cultural myth that has been embraced by them for a long time. In conclusion, the story shows how a young stranger tries to dispel the fear that gnaws at the townspeople's souls, convincing them that hunters are not dangerous

Abstract

In some stories, the development of the characters is motivated by desire. While modern ideas define desire as autonomous, René Girard analyzes desire as imitation from others. “Tell Them Not to Kill Me!” is Juan Rulfo’s short story that tells a story of a fugitive of murder that had to face the death penalty. He fled for thirty years thinking that everyone has forgotten his case, but then he was caught by the Colonel who was the son of the one he murdered. The death penalty was a revenge from a son to his father’s murderer. This paper then focuses on exploring the ways revenge is seen as a mimetic desire in Juan Rulfo’s “Tell Them Not to Kill Me!”. Through the perspective of Girard’s theory of desire, this paper shows that revenge becomes a direct reflection of murder that has been done before. The desire to murder is not spontaneous but determined by the former action. The desire to murder that is expressed by Colonel enables him to punish those who commit crime. ‘The eye for an eye’ is a statement that will not happen if one's own eye is not taken beforehand. Through Girard’s perspective, Rulfo’s story provides evidence that the Colonel’s desire to revenge is mimetic of murder which results in the death penalty of the murderer. In conclusion, the Colonel’s desire is not perceived as positive or negative but a mimesis to the previous other’s deeds.

Abstract

Psychological perspective is widely used today in literary criticism. Guy de Maupassant’s The Christening is one short story related to clustering illusion through the psychological point of view. Clustering illusion is seeing things in logical ways. The question is; how is clustering illusion be depicted in Guy de Maupassant’s The Christening? By using the qualitative method, cultural concepts are used to explain the story in clustering illusion. Things that are so logical then are abandoned in this short story because of religion, custom, and alcohol matters. By comparing the reality and the logic of the doctor as the storyteller, clustering illusion reflects how things that are easily predicted could be really different from reality. Here, tensions between modernity ideas and cultural concepts are contradicted. Modernity which is full of prediction, progress, and individuality is challenged by customary understanding known best by people. In conclusion, the storyteller experiences clustering illusion; what he thinks is logical in an action resulted after another is not as it is because of custom that honors habitual culture above anything else.
