Abstract

This article investigates tensions of positive and negative freedom in a flash fiction of Kathy Hoyle entitled Breathe. The story explores themes of personal growth and resilience through one character's struggle. It fits character development in overcoming challenges and emphasizing the importance of inner strength and self-discovery. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this paper exemplifies negative freedom with the sense of urgencies in positive freedom. The absence of external restraints must also be accompanied with comprehensive senses of belief. In analysis, the protagonist's journey from vulnerability to strength illustrates the human capacity to endure and transform in the face of life's challenges, highlighting resilience and growth in the face of adversity. In conclusion, it reminds people that even in the darkest of times, they still have the strength to breathe, endure, and ultimately thrive towards following positive freedom.

Abstract

This paper exposes collateral damage as representation of moral disengagement in the three superhero films of Black Adam, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Man of Steel. Iconography in superhero film represents ambivalent moral justifications. The superheroes must do everything to ‘save’ the world though it is done by embracing evil, destroying surroundings, or using cunning strategies. Any collateral damage in moral disengagement is considered necessary in order to destroy the source of the problem. The superheroes must do everything to save the day though he/she has to kill, to abuse his/her power, and even be ignorant only to focus on bigger things by sacrificing petty things. As the analysis, the moral disengagement is shown through recurring iconography of superheroes who kill other people and destroy the surrounding. The three superhero films indicate that the actions of the superheroes are only focusing on their own moral values. Collateral damage is considered not only as side effect of superheroes’ action, but also as reflection of their moral disengagement. In conclusion, the values that superheroes hold is universal, but actually, those destroy particular matters. Their moral doings are not totally true, but those are justified as one.

Abstract

This article underlines tensions between medical tourism and radical democracy in Indonesian sense. Medical tourism tends to prioritize those who have money to gain more options, yet change the ideas of medical aspects into such trivial recreations. Meanwhile, radical democracy works to realize such welfare states in which all people could reach better options in life. Radical democracy, as indicated by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, is analyzed through genealogy of hegemony as discourses that are used to be owned by several people are distributed to every person’s needs. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, the analysis of this paper emphasizes on how radical democracy promotes undeveloped people to have better access to basic needs but medical tourism still asks answers from capitalism itself. The discourses will only remain as dialogues while the applications of being ideational have shifted into matters of being recreational. Intertwinements of medical aspects and tourism indeed focuses on those who travel and stay, but will slowly eradicate the truth of the needs of those who need better medical assistances. In conclusion, while radical democracy would like to erode hegemony, medical tourism worsens the situation by pushing more trickle-down effects than fairness and equality before everyone.

Abstract

This article exposes crucial points of negotiated understandings between two characters in Japanese flash fiction entitled Two Frogs. The story tells about the different dreams between two frogs that have plans to reach their destination to see another town. This folktale wants to tell the readers about the similarities between Kyoto and Osaka. Through qualitative method, this research underlines that, in fact, Kyoto is more traditional than Osaka, but later the characters reach such understandings than flourishing the conflicts. Any difference should be negotiated so that it never comes into bigger conflict. Negotiated understanding then could not be separated from such reciprocal cultural appreciations as well. In conclusion, the description, interpretation, and narration of the story explores indications of moral messages of negotiated understandings. It is simply taken as a token of peace that should always be gained rather than unworthy loss due to upcoming frictions between assumptions and interpretations of the characters.

Abstract

This paper explores the crucial aspects of subtextual analysis in contemporary literary criticism. Modern literary criticism tends to play on the definitional aspects of literary works, but subtextual analysis goes beyond by regarding implied meanings. The idea is that meanings are waiting to be revealed by the audience. Through explorative approach and qualitative method, the analysis of this article revolves on the strategies, the critical roles, and the instance of subtextual analysis in literary analysis. The strategies of subtextual analysis involve engaging the audience to foster a personal connection with literary works, synthesizing and correlating meanings within literary works, encompassing empathetic engagement with the narrative, and developing diverse perspectives from the audience's vantage point. The critical roles of subtextual analysis consist of facilitating deeper implications through insinuated meanings, enhancing meanings in intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions of literary works, unveiling repressions presented within the text, facilitating exploration of anticipated interpretations and underlying meanings, adopting interdisciplinary approach, engaging with societal dimensions of literary works, perceiving literary works beyond any definition, and propelling co-texts, hypertexts, hypo-texts, and intertexts. In conclusion, subtextual analysis underlines possibilities in literary analysis by comparing various implied meanings related to humans’ identities in particular.

Abstract

This article would like to expose matter of phallocentrism in short story written by Grace Paley entitled Wants. Phallocentrism itself plays role as the dictations of values of male against female beings. Grace Paley’s short story published in 1974 and tells a woman’s perspective that is so slow and simple in wanting anything. Her ex-husband has certain dream to be achieved, but she only wants to be a good mother and be happy. Through qualitative method on cultural studies, this paper depicts dictation of a man to his ex-wife. This is in line with dictation of man in phallocentrism theorized by Ernest Jones. The woman actually has done many intangible things, but those meant nothing for the man as he wants tangible ones. The man wants to run but the woman prefers to walk. Both of them are lost in time of being together since the ex-husband’s side is too dominant for the ex-wife’s part. In conclusion, the short story explains total difference due to radical dominance instead of living dialogues between man and woman.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to visualize the narrative of English-language short stories offers a novel approach to enriching the interpretive and aesthetic dimensions of storytelling. Utilizing BingImage.com as an AI-based image generator, textual narratives are transformed into prompts that create visual depictions of each scene. The visuals effectively reflect the mood, emotions, and settings of the story, albeit with some inconsistencies in character depictions across scenes. This exploratory approach examines correlations between narrative and visuals, scene continuity, and aesthetic accuracy. The findings indicate that AI-based visualization can create a more immersive reading experience, enhancing the reader's comprehension through relevant illustrations. This technology also provides creative interpretations that expand the artistic dimensions of short stories. Despite its potential, challenges such as maintaining visual consistency across scenes remain. These findings provide new insights into the integration of digital technology in literary transformation, paving the way for innovative future methodologies.
