Abstract

This article exposes how virtual identity or cyber persona deals with metaliteracy today. While traditional identities show particular social constructions, cyber persona asserts ambiguity of sharing culture between cyberspace and real world. The differences also shift enlightenment in literacy into paradox as a consequence of cyber persona trap. Literacy extends to multiliteracy and metaliteracy that enable further possibilities to blur private and public boundaries through interpretations of information. This also encourages the trend of hoax as mismatch between facts and contexts. Hoax exposes absence of reflection on information, or the absence of literacy, in a sharing culture. If literacy defines reading culture, metaliteracy means interpreting in sharing culture. Nevertheless, the interpretation does not enhance understanding because the information is intended for justification of a single truth. Through qualitative method, the analysis includes how metaliteracy shows paradox rather than congruence between virtual and real world. Continuous understanding becomes an alternative to get into the cyber persona. One information alone is never enough to understand realities. In conclusion, cyber persona enables individuals to extend literacy but with a two-edge of blade; information allows further understanding, but could also be used to justify certain ideological truths.

Abstract

The song of Pumped Up Kicks, released by Foster the People in 2010 draws public attention, both because of its melody and dark lyrical theme. This song creates discussions about social isolation, mental health, and violence among teenagers. This paper aims to analyze the song through the qualitative approach and the perspective of social conflicts. By interpreting the lyrics and their deeper implications, this research explores the effects of neglect, bullying, depression, economic disparity, and mental health issues in this song. It highlights how the widening gap between the rich and the poor, along with broken relationships between parents and children, can push youth toward destructive behavior. In conclusion, this analysis suggests that Pumped Up Kicks serves as a powerful social commentary and reminder of the pressing societal issues people face today, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and intervention.

Abstract

This study explores the altruistic qualities of Posey, the main character in Mitch Albom’s novel For One More Day, focusing on her voluntary and intentional behaviors as expressions of altruism. Altruism is defined as selfless concern for the welfare of others, often manifested without expectation of reward. Using qualitative methods and character analysis, this study examines Posey’s acts of sacrifice, emotional support, and moral guidance, specifically in her relationship with her son, Charley Benetto. Her behaviors—from defending her son against unfair judgment to creating lasting emotional bonds—are voluntary and intentional, reflecting a deep commitment to the welfare of others. In conclusion, this study confirms that altruism in the literature can be explained by consistent and intentional actions that prioritize the needs of others over personal gain.

Abstract

In the beginning of March 2021, President of Indonesia annulled alcoholic beverages investment policy which he put in decree about a week before. There were debates among experts and activists about how this investment should be done. Some believe that this decree may enhance local alcoholic beverages culture while others may reject it since the drinks are convinced to bring in bad effects to human beings. There are no universal moral statements, but particular ones, in this decree since people said in economic, cultural, and religious perspectives. Then, how may moral particularism be portrayed in alcoholic beverages investment policy in Indonesia? By examining concepts, theories, and written data, further analysis will be done to answer the question. Bureaucratic law, economic advantages, cultural indications, social impacts, and religious perspectives are the main tensions of this policy. Investment on alcoholic drinks as cultural indications may bring in economic advantages covered by bureaucratic law. However, any bureaucratic law will never omit possibilities of alcoholic abuse which will bring in negative impacts socially. Moreover, religious perspectives which are seen to be best guidance for people should be put above any law including prohibition of alcoholic drink. In conclusion, alcoholic beverages investment policy is the reflection of particularism rather than universal sights of moral conditions.

Abstract

This article underlines the wife’s prolonged projection as her defense mechanism in Marian Parker’s The Recoil of the Gun. Projection as one of defense mechanisms gives attributes of own negative feelings to another person. It is reflected in the utterances of the wife in Parker’s story who keeps blaming the husband whom she has killed. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this paper investigates that the wife’s projection is prolonged before and after the husband’s death. When he is alive, she thinks that the husband is watching her but he is the suspicious one. When he is dead, she keeps justifying herself that what she has done is for the sake of her children. She also keeps saying things about marriage and how she wants to avoid such hereditary for her girls of not being married. It is proven that something is hidden by the wife, but she keeps saying that she is innocent by putting the guilt to the dead man. In conclusion, Parker’s short story shapes understandings that projection done by a character may not happen once since s/he may insist justifications of the negative attributes given to her deceased husband.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the interpretations of morality and ideology in Wes Anderson's film Isle of Dogs. The research employs a qualitative method with the data collection technique of note-taking by watching the film, noting the dialogues of scenes related to the themes of morality and ideology. Data analysis is conducted by examining the characters and plot of the film in relation to the concepts of morality and ideology based on ethical theories and structuralism of ideology. Morality in this film reflects the tension between individual values and collective decisions in society, while ideology is portrayed as a system of power that dominates political decisions. Through the analysis of morality and ideology, it is found that the characters in the film are caught in a conflict between actions that are considered morally right and the ideologies they follow. The film critiques social and political structures through the messages conveyed by characters like Mayor Kobayashi and Chief, who represent a larger system of power. In conclusion, this analysis highlights how the moral messages in the film are connected to ideological decisions that can either worsen or improve the state of society.

Abstract

In China, Han Kitab is an example in how Chinese culture and Islam recognized each other. Ancient Chinese culture is not omitted but enriched by Islam. Confucianism and Islam are different in its each teaching but may crisscross philosophically. Both may come from different backgrounds but both teach people how to behave as individual and part of society. In Indonesia, Islam Nusantara is how Indonesian culture is understood through Islamic perspective. Islam which came later must face many ancient rituals or thoughts. It could not totally eliminate local culture but it can clear up bad aspect of local habits by teaching Islamic way of life. Both Han Kitab and Islam Nusantara shows that Islam did not come to apply such system by force, but it builds such apprehension through acculturation.

Abstract

This paper examines Posey's selfless actions, namely her readiness to make sacrifices, as a major character in Mitch Albom's For One More Day. Emotional empathy and a strong moral commitment are frequently present in altruism, which is characterized as unselfish care for the welfare of others. This study uses a qualitative yet psychological literary analysis to look at how Posey's self-sacrificing actions, whether they be financial, emotional, or physical, show what true altruism is all about. Posey continuously puts the needs of others before her own, from taking on dual parental responsibilities to facing social shame and working nonstop to maintain her family. The results demonstrate that Posey's sacrifices are based on resilience, responsibility, and true love. Her character serves as a reflection of the transforming potential of caring and emphasizes the inner strength needed to continuously give without expecting anything in return.

Abstract

This paper examines the idea of narcissistic self-entitlement as portrayed by Chef Julian Slowik in Seth Reiss and Will Tracy’s The Menu. The study focuses on Chef Slowik’s excessive sense of self-importance and uses qualitative exploratory analysis to analyze how his actions indicate narcissistic behavior. The study examines situations in which Chef Slowik continuously prioritizes his own demands and desires over everyone else’s, even in the face of other people’s sadness and suffering. The study demonstrates how Chef Slowik’s behaviors affected other people’s emotional well-being by examining particular scenes in the film and highlighting his self-entitlement as an example of extreme narcissistic conduct. The analysis concludes that Chef Slowik’s self-entitlement is a powerful example of taking advantage of other people in order to further his own goals.
