Abstract

The present study used a mixed method research design since it aimed at examining the degree of relationship between the students’ writing attitude, apprehension, and writing performance and investigating the causes of both factors. The finding of the study revealed that there was a significantly positive correlation between attitude towards writing and learners’ writing performance (r=.240 and sig=.049<.05) and the difference of performance was significant (Sig.= .018 < .05). The writing apprehension and writing performance were significantly negatively correlated (r=-.246, sig=.043) and the difference of performance was significant (Sig.= .000< 0.05). The interview result showed several factors causing the students’ writing attitude and apprehension. The positive attitudes were caused by the importance of English as an international language, the relationship of English and science, the interest in writing and English, and the lecturer’s evaluation. Students having negative attitude confessed that they were not good at English, writing in English was a difficult activity, and they did not write much. Low writing apprehension was caused by the interest in writing, being good at grammar and vocabulary, and positive thinking in completing the task. At last, students with high apprehension thought that they were afraid of making mistakes; since they were not good at English, they tended to translate bahasa Indonesia into English, and they were not able to develop topics given by the lecturer.

Abstract

Evidence is mounting that teacher question can assist EFL students in various purposes in teaching learning process. However, teacher’s lack of knowledge about questioning taxonomy could become a failure in leading students’ learning. This study investigates questioning strategies, the taxonomy of questions-type, and their application by teacher in advanced prose class, to scaffold students’ learning. Classroom observations, field notes and videotape recording, were employed to collect the data. Findings indicate that among four types of questioning strategies, redirecting was the most frequently used to initiate students’ responses and to probe more into students’ understanding. Other findings show that low-cognitive questions were common. Of those, knowledge-based questions were the most frequently used to confirm students’ understanding of the materials they learnt, but, the higher-level questions were rarely used. It was also found that teacher employed questioning strategies ineffectively to manage the class; insufficient time responded to a complex level of questions; the number of questions created confusion. Some changes to create effective classroom questioning and a stronger connection between the level of question and the questioning strategies are discussed.

Abstract

This paper reports on a study aiming to unravel the challenges that Indonesian novice teachers of English have to cope with, in terms of lesson planning and implementation, classroom management, and professional development. It also inquires into the teachers’ pre-service teacher education experience and support system provided by the school, which might relate to their challenges. The study is a qualitative case study involving eleven English teachers of secondary schools (junior and senior high schools and vocational schools) in Malang areas who have less than five years of teaching experience. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires followed up with semi-structured interviews as a means to clarify and elaborate what the respondents had written in the questionnaires. The study reveals various challenges faced by these novice teachers, including planning and implementing a lesson based on the 2013 Curriculum, designing and applying motivating learning strategies and assessment procedure that would be applicable to a class of students with a relatively low level of ability, and managing a big class. It concludes with some recommendations to bridge the gap between the pre-service and in-service teacher education and professional development.

Abstract

The English teaching in a public vocational school of Akomodasi Perhotelan (SMK AP) so far has shown unsatisfactory result. Based on the preliminary study it was found that the writing skill of the tent graders of SMK AP 3 was low. This classroom action research was aimed at improving the students’ writing skill of descriptive text by implementing VAK learning model. In this study 26 students were selected as subjects. This study was completed through one cycle using VAK learning model. The findings revealed that students’ writing scores increased after the researcher implemented the VAK learning model. The average score of the students improved 38.18 points into 81.49 compared to their scores in the preliminary study which was 43.31. Out of 26 students, there were only 7 (26.92%) who failed to achieve the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). It can be inferred from the findings that the VAK learning model succeeded in helping the students to improve their writing’ achievement. The result of this study implies that VAK learning model can be an alternative to improve the students’ writing skill.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at researching how YouTube Tutorial Videos can improve students’ speaking skill in performing procedure text. It employs Collaborative Action Research adapting Kemmis and Taggart design, which covers 1) planning, 2) implementing, 3) observing, 4) reflecting. Result of the study showed that the students’ speaking skill was improving in three aspects 1) accuracy, 2) fluency, 3) performance. However, it was revealed that native English speaker (NES) videos are not helpful for the students, especially the low-level student. Non-native English speaker (NNES) videos were more helpful for the students because they tend to speak slower with clearer articulation.Key Words: youtube tutorial videos, speaking, procedure textAbstrak: Penelitian bertujuan mengetahui bagaimana video tutorial YouTube dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam menampilkan teks prosedur.
