Abstract

Land use regulation and soil and water conservation techniques need to be intensified to minimize the impact of climate change, especially in controlling floods, erosion and landslides. The purpose of this service is to provide education to the public in efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change through environmentally friendly soil and water conservation technology. The method used in this service is a participatory educational and training method or educational and participatory approach with extension activities, training and technical guidance. The results of the service implementation have been carried out, namely: preparation, introduction of activities, implementation of counseling/training on the material: a) The benefits of increasing land productivity through soil and water conservation techniques and b) Introduction and several soil and water conservation techniques, namely vegetative techniques and terrace construction. the contours of the A frame model, in addition, an evaluation is carried out. Service activities provide benefits in increasing land productivity and assisting in planting arrangements according to contour lines and as a basis for making terraces.

Abstract. Akhbar, Nuryanti S, Naharuddin. 2020. Spatial distrubution and habitat characteristics of Macadamia hildebrandii in the Sintuwu Maroso Protection Forest, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 770-779. Research on the spatial distribution of Macadamia hildebrandii Steen (haleka) tree species is one of the important stages in the preservation of Sulawesi's endemic plants. The purpose of this research was to obtain information regarding the spatial distribution of M. hildebrandii in the area of Sintuwu Maroso Forest Management Unit, Central Sulawesi and the relationship between its occurrence with habitat characteristics in term of land and climate variables. Data was collected by establishing sampling plots using stratified systematic sampling based on land cover, namely primary and secondary dryland forests. Index of dispersion was used to calculate the distance between population while the chi-square test was used to investigate the relationship between M. hildebrandii population and variables of land and climate. The results showed that the M. hildebrandii trees mostly grew in the mountain rain zone ecosystem, clumped in groups according to the characteristics of the dominant natural habitat. The important characteristics of its habitat were it had red-yellow podzolic-lithosol soil type, altitude of ? 1,500 m asl, slope class of ? 25%, middle slope aspect, tineba volcano rock formation (which is volcanic sedimentary rocks), metamorphic parent material, secondary dryland forests, and rainfall of 1,600-2,000 mm/year. The results of study can be used as baseline information for the conservation and sustainable utilization, including cultivation, of M. hildebrandii especially in the montane zone of rain forest ecosystem in Sulawesi.

Spatial model of forest area designation and function based on multi-criteria in dry land and mangrove forest ecosystems, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 3620-3630. Along with the dynamics of rapid social change and the need for land for economic development, land and climate parameters on changes in the designation and function of forest areas, it is time to integrate with socio-economic parameters and government policies while still paying attention to the condition of existing forest vegetation cover. This study aimed to develop a spatial analysis model of changes in the designation and function of forest areas based on multi-criteria in dry land and mangrove forest ecosystems. The research used a descriptive-spatial method with a multi-criteria-based decision-making technique for changes in the designation and function of forest areas. The data analysis utilizes Geographic Information System. The motivation for the proposed forest area change is the target to be achieved in the multi-criteria decision analysis. This research resulted in a spatial analysis approach that integrates scoring techniques and multi-criteria-based decision-making techniques. In Locus BL_010, a change in the function of forest area can be generated, while in Locus TL_003 a decision is made to change the allocation and function of forest area. The achievement of multi-criteria-based spatial analysis on changes in the designation and function of forest areas is quite flexible in decision making because each proposed motivational target will be achieved if it is in accordance with the established criteria and field facts.

Analysis of changes and criticality level of mangrove forest ecosystem as a basis for rehabilitation downstream of Poso Watershed Area, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3179-3188. Effective mangrove forest management requires accurate data and information on changes and criticality levels within the ecosystem. This research aimed to assess changes and determine the criticality levels of mangroves using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a foundation for sustainable conservation and rehabilitation efforts. Multi-temporal satellite data was utilized to analyze mangrove forest cover changes between 2013 and 2023, while NDVI transformations were applied to evaluate forest vegetation density and criticality levels. The results identified five families and 11 mangrove species in the downstream Poso Watershed, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. These included Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. from the Avicenniaceae family, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam., Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) Blume, Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C.B.Rob., Rhizophora apiculata Blume, Rhizophora mucronata Lam., and Rhizophora stylosa Griffith from the Rhizophoraceae family, Sonneratia alba Sm. from the Sonneratiaceae family, Xylocarpus granatum J.Koenig and Xylocarpus rumphii (Kostel.) Mabb. from the Meliaceae family, and Nypa fruticans Wurmb from the Arecaceae family. The mangrove canopy density downstream of the Poso Watershed was categorized into dense (55,652 ha), moderate (56,863 ha), and rare (67,578 ha). The R. stylosa was the dominant species. The criticality assessment classified the mangrove forest as largely damaged, with a TSV1 value of 190 on a scale of 167-233. Severely damaged or very critical areas covered 35,836 ha (6.58%), damaged or critical areas encompassed 401,462 ha (73.68%), and 107,546 ha (19.74%) were classified as not damaged or not critical. The ecosystem damage was further assessed through vegetation density, with moderate density recorded at 1,259 trees/ha and rare density at 360 trees/ha. Monitoring these changes and criticality levels is essential for successful rehabilitation and demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable conservation.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), analyze spore density, assess the level of AMF colonization in the roots of Pigafetta elata, and evaluate the physical and chemical properties of soils within its habitat.The study was conducted from August to October 2025. Soil and root samples of Pigafetta elata were collected from its habitats in Puroo Village, Lindu District, Sigi Regency, and Sedoa Village, North Lore District, Poso Regency. Soil samples were analyzed to identify AMF morphospecies and determine spore density, while root samples were analyzed to determine the percentage of root colonization. These analyses were carried out at the Forest Biotechnology Laboratory, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB University), Bogor, West Java. Analyses of soil physical and chemical properties were conducted at the Soil Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Tadulako University, Palu.The results showed that in Puroo Village, three AMF morphospecies belonging to two genera (Acaulospora and Glomus) were identified, with a spore density of 5 spores per 20 g of soil and a root colonization rate of 49.56%. In contrast, in Sedoa Village, seventeen morphospecies belonging to three genera (Acaulospora, Glomus, and Gigaspora) were identified, with a spore density of 47 spores per 20 g of soil and a colonization rate of 45.84%. These differences were associated with edaphic conditions: Puroo had a near-neutral soil pH (6.30), high organic carbon content (4.15%), and good porosity (55.86%), whereas Sedoa had acidic soil conditions (pH 4.48), moderate organic carbon content (2.16%), and lower porosity (45.84%). This study revealed an ecological trade-off within AMF communities. In habitats with favorable soil conditions (Puroo), AMF allocated more energy to root colonization. Conversely, in environmentally stressed habitats (Sedoa), AMF produced a greater number of spores as a survival strategy. These findings provide baseline information for the conservation of Pigafetta elata and support the utilization of AMF as a biological agent in ecosystem restoration efforts

Abstract

Studies on forest-area conversion generally examine land-cover dynamics and forest policy separately, leaving the relationship between formal changes in forest designation, actual landscape conditions, and their underlying institutional factors insufficiently understood. This study addresses this gap by integrating multi-temporal land-cover classification with policy, regulatory, and interview analyses to evaluate the conversion of part of the Central Sulawesi Grand Forest Park (Tahura). Sentinel-2 imagery from 2019, 2020, and 2025 was classified using the Random Forest algorithm on the Google Earth Engine platform. The spatial findings were complemented by document analysis and semi-structured interviews with three key informants from relevant forestry institutions. Classification performance showed Overall Accuracy values of 92.99%, 89.77%, and 95.30%, with Kappa coefficients of 0.8855, 0.81, and 0.86 for 2019, 2020, and 2025, respectively. The results indicate that the Tahura area decreased from 7,128 ha to 5,149 ha following Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree No. SK.6624/MENLHK-PKTL/KUH/PLA.2/10/2021. The converted area comprised 1,933 ha designated as Limited Production Forest and 46 ha as Other Land Use Areas. In 2025, the remaining Tahura was dominated by primary forest covering 3,105.38 ha (60.31%) and secondary forest covering 1,040.47 ha (20.21%). Although the conversion complied with formal procedures, it revealed tensions between regional development interests and conservation objectives. The novelty of this study lies in linking legally mandated forest-area conversion with empirically observed land-cover dynamics and institutional explanations within a single analytical framework. Practically, the findings provide a basis for post-conversion monitoring, rehabilitation prioritization, spatial-policy evaluation, tenure-conflict resolution, and the protection of ecologically important areas.

Abstract

The increase in tourism activity in the Lake Tambing area has the potential to put pressure on the ecosystem, especially on wildlife that is sensitive to human disturbance. Lake Tambing located in Lore Lindu National Park, Central Sulawesi, is an area of ​​high ecological value and home to a variety of endemic flora and fauna. This study aimed to analyze the potential of fauna, particularly bird populations, as indicators of ecological conditions and to observe the impact of tourism activities on bird diversity. The study was conducted from February to June 2025 at the camping ground and on the trackings trail using the line transect method. Data analysis included the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, evenness index, dominance index, and t-tests for comparisons between habitats. The study identified 56 bird species from 30 families, of which 26 are endemic to Sulawesi. Diversity index values ​​ranged from 2.79 to 3.28, indicating moderate to high levels of diversity. Statistical tests showed that tourist activity had no significant impact on bird diversity in either habitat type. This indicates that anthropogenic disturbance at Lake Tambing remains at a low level. These findings provide an important scientific basis for sustainable tourism practices, standardization of birdwatching site design, and effective endemic species conservation efforts in the Lake Tambing area.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effect of the fiber weight fraction of oil palm empty bunch fiber (OPEBF) composite with HDPE matix on tensile strength and impact. The composite fabrication process is performed using the hot compression method for 210oC with a weight fraction of 40, 50, and 60% fiber. The results showed that the highest tensile strength of the composite fraction of 40% fiber was 3.461 MPa and its modulus of elasticity was 97.702 MPa, followed by the fraction of 50% fiber with a value of 2.948 MPa, the modulus of elasticity was 88.544 MPa, and the lowest value was in the fraction of 60% fiber with a value of 2.205 MPa, and the modulus of elasticity was 87.622 MPa. Furthermore, the highest effort in the impact test on the weight fraction of 40% fiber is 4,249 Joules and an impact energy value of 8364,744 Joules/mm2, followed by a weight fraction of 50% fiber with an effort value to break the specimen of 3,935 Joules and an impact energy value of 7745,651 Joules/mm2, and the lowest attempt to break the specimen at the weight fraction of 60% fiber has a value of 3,341 Joules and has an impact energy of 6576,934 Joules/mm2.

Abstract

Community-based collaborative watershed governance offers a potential solution to the limitations of government-led management by leveraging substantial social capital to sustain watershed functions. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate community social capital in watershed conservation and formulate strategies to strengthen it, promoting the sustainability of Poso Watershed. The investigation was conducted in Tentena and Sawidago Villages in Poso Watershed, using interviews with households and key informants, focus group discussions, and field observations. This research employed descriptive quantitative analysis to assess community social capital characteristics and levels, while applying SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis to develop strategies for strengthening social capital. The results showed that high cognitive-social capital required substantial structural social capital to generate collective action in watershed conservation. Weak structural social capital was reflected in the community’s limited understanding of formal rules and low involvement in organizations related to forest and watershed conservation, leading to weak solidarity and collective action. Strengthening social capital required harnessing the role of the Watershed Management Coordination Forum, which engages government and stakeholders in community-based collaborative watershed management. This primary strategy should be supported by improving communication, socialization, counselling, increasing community participation, and fostering the role of local institutions in watershed conservation.
