Abstract

Abstract. Early adolescents often engage in dangerous behavior, which is a form of sensation-seeking behavior and can be classified as a form of personal fable because it is done intentionally and can endanger others. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal fables and sensation-seeking in the early teens of motorcyclists in Makassar. The subjects in this study were 408 boys who were early teenagers. The sampling technique in this study is cluster sampling using quantitative methods. Measuring instruments used in this research are sensation seeking scale and personal fable scale. Analyzed using Product moment correlation analysis techniques with the help of SPSS 23.0 for Windows. The results showed a positive relationship between personal fable and sensation seeking in early adolescents (p = 0,000, r = 0.401). This study illustrates that the higher the level of personal fable, the higher the sensation seeking of early teenage motorcyclists in the city of Makassar. The results of this study are expected to reduce the level of motorcyclists in early adolescents, given that early teenagers have not been able to control their cognition. Keywords: Early Teenager, motorcyclists, personal fable, sensation-seeking

Abstract

Background: Smoking is something that students do, especially when they are stressed. People's stress levels have been linked to more intense smoking. Objective: to ascertain the function of self-control as a moderating factor in the impact of stress on smoking intensity among college students. Method: The present investigation employs quantitative methodologies. The study sample consisted of 224 students residing in Makassar City who reported smoking. Result: The findings of the initial hypothesis examination indicated that the observed p-value was 0.035 (p < 0.05), and the correlation coefficient was 0.631. The obtained R-square score of 0.443 suggests that stress accounts for 44.3% of the variance in smoking intensity and exerts a statistically significant positive influence on it. The findings from the second hypothesis test utilizing MRA analysis indicated an interaction value of -0.015. Conclusion: The interaction value shows a negative value, which means that the higher the self-control, the smaller the influence of stress on smoking intensity, and vice versa. The results of this research can be used by universities, counselors, and therapists who are involved in the intervention process to reduce and stop smoking addiction so that they can develop intervention programs that emphasize the importance of increasing students' self-control.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of mothers adapting after receiving a Down Syndrome (DS) diagnosis for their child. Utilizing a Heideggerian phenomenological approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews with 10 mothers of children with DS, focusing on their emotional responses, acceptance, and hopes. The analysis identified three main themes: initial reactions to the diagnosis and the resulting loss of hope, the process of acceptance, and managing hopes while adapting to the child's condition. The findings reveal the complex journey mothers undergo in restructuring their emotions and thoughts, underscoring the importance of diagnostic confirmation, social support, and spiritual beliefs in the acceptance process. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of mothers’ experiences following a DS diagnosis and offers insights for health professionals and support systems to better assist families during this critical period. The theme of “reframing hopes” emerged as central, facilitating mothers’ ability to adjust and maintain hope for their children’s futures.

Abstract

Abstract. Conformity behavior is closely related to fandom, especially on social media which faces the issue of spreading hate speech through anonymous accounts. This research investigates hate speech among Twitter users who are members of the Thai Boys Love (BL) fan community. Social media, especially Twitter, often becomes a forum for communication between fans and can trigger hate speech behavior. This study involved 156 active members of the Thai BL fandom community on Twitter and used a scale of conformity, anonymity, and verbal aggression. Data analysis using multiple linear regression. The results of the analysis obtained a value of p = 0.000 and r = 0.271. The p value <0.05, so that conformity and anonymity have an influence on the hate test. The value of r indicates a positive correlation direction, which means that the higher the conformity and anonymity, the higher the hate speech in the Thai BL fandom on Twitter. The implications of this research include developing strategies to prevent and deal with hate speech in online communities, especially among fans of Thai BL content on Twitter. Keywords: Anonymity, BL Fandom, Conformity, Hate Speech

Abstract

Purpose – As internet use grows, cyberbullying has become more common, especially in schools. People who witness cyberbullying (cyber-bystanders) strongly influence these incidents, but little is known about their behavior. To reduce cyberbullying, we need to understand what affects cyber-bystanding. This study examines whether personal peacefulness can predict how people act as cyber-bystanders. Design/methods/approach – This quantitative correlational study examined 127 Indonesian internet users (36 males, 91 females). Data were collected using the Self Perception Scale and Cyberbullying Bystander Scale, with regression analysis employed to analyze the relationship between variables. Findings – Results revealed a significant relationship between personal peacefulness and defender bystander behavior. However, no significant relationships were found with passive or reinforcer bystander behaviors. Gender analysis showed that males exhibited higher levels of personal peacefulness than females. Additionally, males were more likely to act as reinforcer bystanders, supporting cyberbullying behavior, compared to females. Research implications/limitations – This study reveals how personal peacefulness relates to cyber-bystanding among Indonesian internet users. The findings help understand social behavior in schools where cyberbullying often occurs. These insights can help develop strategies to prevent harmful cyber-bystanding behavior by focusing on personal peacefulness. Originality/value – While cyberbullying behavior in Indonesia has been extensively studied, research on cyber-bystanding remains limited, primarily documented through news articles. This study represents the first investigation of the relationship between personal peacefulness and cyber-bystanding in Indonesia. Future research should explore these variables in relation to other factors and different demographic groups to expand the current understanding of cyber-bystanding behavior in the Indonesian context.
