Abstract

The income of vegetable farmers in Wakuli Village comes from production results and the prices received by farmers. Efficient management and increased production should have an impact on farmer welfare. However, in reality the exchange rate and the existence of farmers are often neglected in the economic system, especially in the distribution system for vegetable crops, so they are unable to provide positive profits. The aim of this research is to analyze the role of middlemen from the perspective of vegetable farmers and to determine the type of dependency of vegetable farmers as patron-clients. The informants in this research consisted of 1 key informant from village officials, the main informant consisted of 7 vegetable farmers and 3 middlemen, as well as 1 supporting informant from the head of the farmer group. The data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interviews and documentation. The instruments in this research were an interview guide, writing tools and recording equipment. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman interactive data analysis model. The research results show that middlemen in agricultural activities in Wakuli Village have an active role as capital owners, buyers and marketers. There are several types of middleman roles that are considered to be able to help farmers in dealing with economic and social problems. The role of the middleman covers all aspects (production, marketing, financial and social) needed by farmers in Wakuli Village. In the vegetable production process, farmers depend on capital provided by middlemen and in the marketing process the vegetables are sold to middlemen. Of all the farmers who were informants in this research, on average, they channeled their vegetable harvests to middlemen.

Abstract

Cocoa and patchouli plants are the two primary commodities in Indonesia's agricultural sector. Technically and economically, cocoa and patchouli cultivation have advantages and disadvantages. These advantages and disadvantages will, of course, impact the costs and revenues of farming. Meanwhile, farmers cultivating cocoa or patchouli commodities aim to obtain maximum income. However, some farmers in South Konawe Regency have decided to switch from cocoa to patchouli. Thus, this study aims to analyze the influence of farmer age, area of cultivated land, pest and plant disease attacks, and cocoa productivity on farmers' decision-making to replace cocoa plants with patchouli. Puduria Jaya Village, part of South Konawe Regency, was chosen as the study location. The study was conducted in April 2020. This study determined 60 farmers who cultivate cocoa and patchouli as the study population. The census method was used to determine the sample of farmers. The variables observed were the farmer's decision to change crop types, age, cultivated land area, pest and plant disease attacks, and cocoa plant productivity. Interviews were carried out for data collection. The collected data was analyzed using binary logistic regression. The results of data analysis show that the productivity of cocoa plants significantly influences the decision-making opportunity for farmers to replace cocoa plants with patchouli. Meanwhile, the farmer's age, cultivated land area, pest attacks, and plant diseases do not have a significant effect. The greater the decline in the productivity of cocoa plants, the more excellent the opportunity for farmers to make decisions to replace cocoa plants with patchouli. Therefore, easy and cheap cocoa cultivation technology is needed to increase the productivity of cocoa farming.

Abstract

Red Palm Oil (RPO) is a natural antioxidant source rich in carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, and vitamin E, with significant potential for development as a functional food ingredient. However, the primary challenge in utilizing RPO is the degradation of its bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids and vitamin E, during processing and storage. This degradation can affect the nutritional quality and health benefits of products containing RPO. This article is a narrative review aimed at evaluating the potential of Red Palm Oil (RPO) as a natural antioxidant source in the development of functional foods. The article also identifies the key challenges in maintaining the stability of bioactive compounds and reviews various cutting-edge technological solutions that can enhance its stability, which have not been widely addressed in the existing literature. The proposed approaches include the use of low-temperature processing technologies, microencapsulation, and nanoemulsion to preserve the nutritional quality and bioactive compound effectiveness in RPO. The findings indicate that while RPO has a high content of carotenoids and vitamin E, the stability of these compounds heavily depends on the processing methods used. The application of proper processing technologies can enhance RPO’s potential in functional food products, contributing to the prevention of degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. In conclusion, RPO has significant potential in the functional food industry; however, further innovations in processing technologies and marketing strategies are required to optimize its utilization. Abstract

Farmers’ dependence on inorganic fertilizers in crop cultivation remains high, leading to increased agricultural production costs and a gradual decline in soil quality and fertility over time. Meanwhile, Dana Village, Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, has abundant local waste resources, including crop residues, leaves, livestock manure, and household kitchen waste, which have not been optimally utilized. These materials have the potential to be processed into solid and liquid organic fertilizers that can improve soil fertility and enhance crop productivity. This Community Service Program aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills through training on the production of solid and liquid organic fertilizers based on local waste as an alternative to inorganic fertilizers. The program was implemented through lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice. The results showed increased farmers’ understanding, technical skills, and interest in independently producing and applying organic fertilizers. This activity is expected to be an initial step toward strengthening farmer self-reliance and promoting environmentally friendly agricultural waste management.
