Abstract

This research describes family gender roles in Big Little Lies novel. Gender roles discussion has been important to see how social creates expectation or standard that men and women should behave. Society gives appropriate role to appropriate gender. In order to describe this phenomenon in the novel, the researcher used Eagly’s social role theory with feminist approach. The research is designed with qualitative approach. In collecting and analyzing the data, the research applied method of documentation and content analysis. The result showed that there are two kinds of gender roles in family domain in the novel; the breadwinner and the homemaker. Mainly, women were expected to be the homemaker whereas men were expected to be the breadwinner. The expectation came from the typical activity of men and women in the novel’s environment. However, the research also found that agentic women like Madeline, Renata, and Jackie, they could participate in the role of the breadwinner. Communal men like Ed, Jonathan, and Stu, they could participate in the role of homemaker. The research concluded that the novel’s society did not project the typical gender roles strictly because husbands and wives in the novel are allowed to shift roles.

Abstract

Humans are always in touch with the needs in this life. In order to survive, one of the most important examples is the need for safety needs. The phenomenal drama Othello by Shakespeare was chosen as the main data source in this research. This research aimed to analyze the unfulfilled of safety needs in the form of anxiety and its impact on the main character in Shakespeare's drama "Othello". This drama was set in 1603 with a tragedy and was written by the world-famous playwright William Shakespeare. The story that ended in tragedy is inseparable from the anxiety used by others to overthrow power and the Othello family. With these problems, the researchers explored the anxiety factor by using Maslow's psychological theory about the hierarchy of needs, especially at the level of safety needs. This research used qualitative descriptive method because the data collection technique used is to describe the analysis through words and sentences that exist in the data source. The approach used in this research was psychological approach in a literary work. The results found from this research that there is an anxiety factor that underlie Othello's feeling that he is always threatened. Jealousy is a factor that causes anxiety in the character "Othello" which focused on household relationships. This excessive anxiety then causes impacts in the form of misunderstanding, the death of Othello's wife, and Othello's suicide.

Abstract

The city of Medan is facing a critical environmental situation due to recurrent flooding that has affected various areas throughout 2024–2025. According to data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Medan, there are 25 flood-prone points, with 7,699 houses inundated and 24,874 residents affected. This condition is exacerbated by the low level of public awareness regarding environmental cleanliness and unplanned urban development that neglects ecological balance. In response, a community service team from the Department of Indonesian Literature conducted a program entitled “Environmental Awareness Movement through Green Literature” in Dusun III, Tanjung Gusta Village, Sunggal Subdistrict—one of the flood-prone areas in Medan. The program involved approximately 50 young participants and featured two expert speakers: an ecologist and a literary scholar specializing in environmental studies. Participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the sessions, which included lectures, group discussions, and interactive question-and-answer activities. The materials covered topics such as ecosystem preservation, the impact of waste on water channels, and the role of literature as an educational and inspirational medium for fostering environmental awareness. As a follow-up, participants and the community service team initiated concrete actions such as tree planting, community clean-up activities, and the creation of eco-literary works, including poetry and short stories with ecological themes. The program not only encouraged behavioral change toward environmental stewardship but also aimed to develop youth as role models for environmentally conscious communities. The program outputs include a submitted national journal article, online news coverage, a training module (in progress for ISBN registration), an intellectual property (HAKI) submission, and a documentary video—serving as tangible contributions to environmental sustainability in Medan.

Abstract

The food security of the Koto Gadang VI Koto community in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, is frequently threatened by crop failures caused by pests such as rats and planthoppers. This study aims to describe how the ratik tolak bala tradition functions as a cultural strategy for maintaining local food security. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional and religious leaders, farmers, and field documentation. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman (reduction, display, conclusion drawing) and was interpreted through C.A. Van Peursen’s framework of tradition (mystical, ontological, and functional stages). The findings reveal that ratik tolak bala originated as a communal response to pest attacks threatening rice crops—the main food source. The ritual consists of two stages: ratik duduak (collective chanting in the mosque) and ratik tagak (processional chanting around the village), accompanied by the application of paureh, a herbal mixture of local plants, and field sanitation activities. Led by a mursyid (religious teacher), the ritual effectively reduced pest infestations, restored harvest yields, and ensured stable household rice stocks. Theoretically, the practice reflects a transition from mystical belief to functional rationality consistent with FAO’s four food security pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability.

Abstract

Romanticism is often misunderstood as something genuine love and merely about romance. In fact, romanticism is an understanding of great ideas that also be delivered great ideas. The development of Romanticism delivered a new orientation that called National Romanticism by maintaining the freedom of individual, sovereignty, and independent of human rights. This study took data from three Walt Whitman poems; Patriotic, War Democracy, and Poem of America. Researcher was using the concept of interpretation to explore the meaning of poetry and the influence of romanticism in Whitman poetry. Researchers use Isaiah's theory in his book “the root of romanticism” to explore the influence of the romanticism idea on Whitman's poems. From the three samples of poetry, it is found that romanticism is very influential in Whitman poetry, especially the idea of romantic nationalism. Patriotic themes, nationalities and egalitarian concepts are reflected in Whitman's collection of "Leaves of grass" poems. Patriotic themes and nationalities are seen from the struggle for the right of individual freedom in opposing slavery and aristocratic government. The egalitarian concept is seen from the struggle to promote equality, as well as the democracy system that promotes people's sovereignty. The role of the idea of romanticism has evolved in American territory because it shares the same pattern and state of affairs as revolutions against noble, social, and political norms and rationalization of nature. Thus, the representation of romantic ideas originating from Western Europe of the 18th century has penetrated into the 19th century America which is reflected in the works that carried Whitman.

Abstract

The condition of the Malays is significantly marginalized due to the migration and the rapid industrial development in Batam, Indonesia. However, the Malay sacred myth is still sustained as a local wisdom for the Malay generations. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the ethnoecology behind the story of the sacred myth of Bumbum, Puak, and Batu Belah as a representation of environmental Malay local wisdom in Kampong Tua Nongsa, Batam. Within the conceptual framework of ethnoecology as a bridge to understanding the relationship between literature in the form of folklore and the culture of society, this qualitative research collected data through observation by being directly involved in the community and in-depth interviews with 21 informants including the key jury of the sacred places, community advice, community leaders, village officials, and the younger generation of Malay people in Kampong Tua Nongsa. Data analysis was carried out by comparing, reconfirming, classifying, and interpreting the data with an ethnoecology approach. The results showed that there were three important ethnoecological representations: (1) the ecological ties between forests and humans in the sacred Bumbum, (2) the reflection of the wise king in the sacred of Puak, and (3) the sea as the central life of nature in the sacred of Batu Belah. Sacred site prohibitions reveal deep connections between human behavior and nature, emphasizing ethical considerations; these stories highlight cultural values, insights for heritage preservation, and solutions for environmental challenges within an ethnoecological framework, stressing the importance of ethics in human-nature interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the shift in the meaning of Fahombo in the dynamics of culture and modernization using the theory of diffusion of innovation from Everett Rogers (1962). This theory highlights how changes in Nias culture occur through the process of innovation, communication, time, and social systems. In this context, Fahombo is not only maintained as a cultural heritage, but also experiences adaptation due to the influence of modernization and globalization. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a virtual interview method via the Zoom application to explore in depth the information needed. The informants involved consisted of parents who had experienced or witnessed Fahombo in a traditional context, community leaders who had a deep understanding of the history and changes in the tradition, and local residents who witnessed firsthand the transformation of Fahombo in recent decades. The results of the study show that the shift in the meaning of Fahombo occurs through five stages of innovation adoption according to Rogers, namely: awareness, interest, evaluation, experimentation, and acceptance. Traditional values are maintained, but reinterpretation occurs in the context of tourism, cultural identity, and social expression. This transformation reflects the process of social and selective adaptation in which local and global elements interact to form a new understanding of Fahombo in contemporary Nias society. This study provides insights into how traditions can survive and thrive in changing social systems.
