Abstract

Migrant university students living in boarding houses face significant challenges in maintaining healthy lifestyles due to academic pressure, environmental changes, and limited access to health-supporting facilities. Health literacy plays a crucial role in enabling students to manage their health independently by accessing, understanding, evaluating, and applying health information. This study aims to analyze the role of health literacy in shaping self-management skills and healthy lifestyle behaviors among migrant students residing in boarding houses. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using a structured online questionnaire distributed to 50 migrant students. The instrument measured dimensions of health literacy, physical health behaviors, mental health awareness, and self-management practices. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify behavioral trends and literacy patterns. The findings indicate that while students demonstrate relatively high access to digital health information, the application of health knowledge in daily practices such as balanced diet, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep remains inconsistent. Academic workload and economic constraints emerged as major barriers to healthy behavior. The study concludes that students’ health literacy is predominantly at a functional level and has not yet fully translated into sustainable self-management practices. These findings highlight the need for targeted health education interventions that promote critical and applied health literacy among migrant students.

Abstract

The preservation of local culture faces increasing challenges amid globalization, digitalization, and shifting youth lifestyles. Cultural literacy plays a crucial role in shaping young people’s awareness, attitudes, and participation in safeguarding cultural heritage. This study aims to analyze the level of cultural literacy and the extent of youth participation in preserving local culture. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, involving young respondents aged 18–25 years. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire measuring cultural literacy dimensions—cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, critical understanding, and cultural participation. The findings indicate that most respondents demonstrate moderate to high levels of cultural literacy, particularly in cultural awareness and symbolic understanding. However, active participation in cultural preservation activities remains relatively limited and tends to be symbolic rather than practical. The results suggest that while young people possess basic cultural knowledge, gaps persist between cultural understanding and concrete participatory actions. Strengthening cultural literacy through education, digital media engagement, and community-based cultural programs is essential to foster sustainable youth participation in local cultural preservation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of digital health literacy among migrant students living in boarding houses near campus and its association with healthy lifestyle behaviors. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey design. Data were collected from migrant university students residing in boarding houses through a questionnaire based on the digital health literacy framework, encompassing four core dimensions: access, understand, appraise, and apply. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to examine patterns of digital health literacy and health-related behaviors. The findings indicate that most students demonstrate strong abilities in accessing and understanding digital health information, particularly through the internet and social media platforms. Students also show a relatively high level of awareness in verifying health information sources. However, a proportion of respondents remain uncertain when appraising the credibility of digital health information. In terms of application, the majority of students report engaging in positive health behaviors, including maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, regulating diet and hydration, performing light physical activity, and adopting adaptive coping strategies to support mental health. This study concludes that digital health literacy plays a significant role in shaping healthy lifestyle behaviors among migrant university students. Strengthening evaluative and applicative competencies through targeted digital health literacy education and campus-based health promotion programs is essential to support sustainable health behaviors in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of environmental literacy among university students living in boarding houses in Medan Tembung District and to examine the role of the boarding house environment in supporting pro-environmental behavior. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design involving 60 respondents selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the environmental literacy level of boarding house students is categorized as good across all measured dimensions. Environmental attitudes and support from the boarding house environment show the highest average scores, while pro-environmental behavior, although still categorized as good, appears relatively lower. These findings suggest that students’ environmental behavior is influenced not only by individual factors but also by the availability of facilities and the management of the boarding house environment. This study concludes that the boarding house environment plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of students’ environmental literacy. Therefore, improving sanitation facilities and strengthening environmental management in boarding houses are recommended to promote sustainable pro-environmental behavior among students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of digital media literacy among students of Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED), particularly in relation to information awareness and social media practices. A quantitative survey design was employed involving 55 active undergraduate students selected through non-probability sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on four dimensions of media literacy: information access, information evaluation, digital awareness, and responsible social media use. The instrument was validated through expert judgment and demonstrated acceptable reliability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including percentages and mean scores. The findings indicate that UNIMED students generally possess a high level of digital media literacy. Students demonstrate strong awareness of the importance of verifying information, understanding the potential risks of misinformation, and utilizing social media responsibly. However, the results also reveal that awareness does not always translate into consistent information verification practices, indicating a gap between digital literacy knowledge and actual online behavior. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening media literacy education within higher education institutions through the integration of critical thinking, information verification, and digital citizenship competencies. This study contributes empirical evidence on university students’ digital media literacy and provides recommendations for developing educational strategies that foster responsible and critical engagement with social media.

Abstract

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a participatory, TBM-based approach in strengthening disaster literacy and psychosocial well-being in post-disaster communities. The findings show a significant improvement in disaster literacy, with most participants progressing from low baseline understanding to moderate and high levels, and around 75% able to identify risks, explain evacuation procedures, and demonstrate basic preparedness. Community participation also increased substantially, particularly among children and youth, indicating that interactive and contextual learning approaches enhance engagement and learning outcomes. Beyond cognitive gains, the study reveals important psychosocial improvements, including reduced anxiety, increased emotional stability, and stronger social interaction. The integration of trauma healing and community-based counseling within learning activities proved effective in supporting emotional recovery and rebuilding social cohesion. These findings confirm that combining disaster literacy and psychosocial support within a participatory framework produces more comprehensive outcomes than fragmented interventions. The study contributes by offering a contextual, integrative, and sustainable model that strengthens both cognitive and socio-emotional capacities. It also highlights the evolving role of TBM as a community resilience hub, demonstrating its strategic potential in supporting post-disaster recovery and long-term community empowerment.
