Abstract

Boat seine gear is a fishing gear is classified as a purse seine that has high productivity, resulting in a high composition of catches. The composition of fish species in the body of water is used to predict species diversity to show the number of individuals or different types of fish due to differences in size, shape, and quantity. In addition to diversity, size distribution also functions to show the growth rate of fish based on length frequency in a body of water. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diversity and size distribution of catches from boat seines in the Carocok Tarusan Coastal Waters. A survei method was used in this study. A purposive sampling method was used for the sampling. The study showed that the total catch of boat seine was 433.904 fish weighing 899,86 kg, which was divided into main catch (HTU) and bycatch (HTS). The number of HTU catches of payang was higher (92.51%) than that bycatch of 7,49%. The diversity index value in the Carocok Tarusan Coastal Waters was 0,37, the uniformity index was 0,12 and the dominance index was 0,86. It can be concluded that the results of the diversity and uniformity index are relatively low while the dominance index value is relatively high. The distribution of anchovy size as the main result of payang, which is 64,74% is considered worthy of being caught

Abstract

This study aims to compare the fishing performance of wire traps (bubu kawat) using two different types of bait, namely oil palm fruit and coconut pulp, in Kelari Lake, Muaro Jambi. The research was conducted over a period of 20 days with two treatments and a total of 20 repetitions. Each treatment used 10 units of wire traps placed randomly at the study site. The observed parameters included fish species, number and weight of catches, and frequency of fish occurrence. The results showed that seven fish species were captured during the study, namely Nilem (Osteochilus vittatus), Kapiat (Puntioplites falcifer), Sebarau (Hampala ampalong), Tembakang (Helostoma temminckii), Gabus (Channa striata), Sepat (Trichopodus pectoralis), and Baung (Hemibagrus nemurus). Nilem was the most frequently caught species in both bait treatments, while Gabus had the lowest catch frequency. Statistically, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the number and weight of catches between the two bait types, although coconut pulp produced slightly higher catch numbers. Environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, and water depth were within the optimal range for freshwater fish, supporting the fishing activity. This study concludes that both bait types can be effectively used with wire traps, but oil palm fruit provides more consistent results for fishermen in Kelari Lake.

Abstract

West Sumatera has high fishery potential, particularly for macarel(Thunnus sp), whose presence is influenced by oceanographic factors such as sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a concentration, and ocean currents. This study aims to analyze the variability of SST, chlorophyll-a, and currents in West Sumatera waters, identify oceanographic indicators of upwelling events, and examine the relationship between upwelling and potential macarel fishing grounds. Using a qualitative survey approach and ArcGIS 10.8, spatial analysis was conducted to determine potential fishing zones. Results indicate SST fluctuated between 28.1°C (February 2023) and 30,4°C (July 2022), while chlorophyll-a showed seasonal variation, peaking at 0.40 mg/m³ in June 2022. Current patterns are influenced by monsoonal winds and global atmospheric phenomena, with stronger currents during the East season, promoting upwelling and marine productivity. Overlay analysis revealed weak to very weak upwelling occurring periodically. Despite the weak upwelling, West Sumatera remains a highly potential fishing area, supported by positive correlations between SST and chlorophyll-a with macarel fishing zones. Regression analysis shows SST and chlorophyll-a negatively affect macarelcatches, whereas currents have a positive influence. Overall, oceanographic variability significantly impacts fishing potential in West Sumatera.
