Abstract

This study is a descriptive qualitative which aims to know the appropriateness of the textbook’s content with the cognitive dimension of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and to know the dominant cognitive category of the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy in the textbook. This research was focused on analyzing the English Textbook, “Pathway to English”, which is published by Erlangga. The data was analyzed through data analysis table to categorize the activity with defined as any one of the following: a question or instructional activity, based on cognitive dimension. The result showed that there are 271 activities in the textbook. The activities spread over 105 (38.7%) remembering, 76 (28%) understanding, 48 (17.7%) applying, 28 (10.3%) analyzing, 7 (2.6%) evaluating, and 7 (2.6%) creating. The total number of activities that included to HOTS are 42 activities or 15.5% and the activities that included to LOTS are 229 activities or 84.5%. The most dominant activity was remembering which the lowest dimension of cognitive level of Revised Bloom Taxonomy. Then, the number of LOTS and HOTS activities in each chapter are very different. Hence, it is not enough if the teacher just only uses the English textbook as a teaching tool to improve students HOTS ability.

Abstract

Method section of research articles defined as a crucial part among several sections. This study employed an analytical framework of method sections by adopting from Zhang and Wannaruk (2016) adjusting from Pho's (2008a). There were 15 research articles published in International Journal and 15 others published in Cambodian National Journal selected as the sample for the study. Three vital research questions were established to investigate this analysis comprising (1) to find out on moves structure in Method sections of RAs written by Cambodian authors published in national journal; (2) the same moves structure in Method section of RAs published in international journals; and (3) the differences of both move structure in Method sections of RAs in national and international journals. Three moves in method section were used in the study such as: Move1 on Describing Research Design; Move2 on Describing Data Collection procedures; and Move3 on Describing Data Analysis. The results stated that all these three moves were found as conventional moves in International Journal while optional moves were found in National Journal. Almost the same results on steps in move2 from the analysis except step2 which was found as obligatory in the International Journal. One step in move3 and five steps in move2 were found as the same status. There were only three optional steps found in International while there were five steps and three moves were found as optional steps and moves. This analysis suggested that Cambodian National Journal should provide clear distinction in writing method sections by introducing specific model of moves and steps to write a qualify method for a research. Future researcher should study rhetorical analysis of move structure in method section in the same filed but the samples should be selected from new published research articles and increased the number of research articles for the analysis.

Abstract

Many EFL students struggle to participate actively in classroom discussions due to limited proficiency in English, which can hinder their ability to fully engage and learn. The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perceptions of language translation techniques used in EFL classroom discussions. The methodological technique used in this study is qualitative. Using qualitative descriptive methodologies, study data was gathered through interviews. Ten XI-grade students from a senior high school in Bengkulu were the subjects of the interview process. According to the results, students feel more at ease in class when their teachers employ translanguaging because it allows them to interact in two languages during class discussions, communicate with teachers effectively, engage in more engaging learning activities, and pick up new vocabulary. While some students acknowledged that they had trouble understanding teachers when they spoke in English, the majority of them understood the significance of English.

Abstract

Speaking ability among English as a foreign language learners (EFL) is influenced by various factors, including cognitive diversity that encompasses individual differences in cognitive styles, information processing, problem-solving approaches, and learning preferences. This study investigated the relationship between cognitive diversity and speaking abilities among English Education students at the University of Bengkulu. Using a quantitative correlational approach with 30 students, cognitive diversity was measured through a questionnaire, and speaking ability was assessed via oral presentations. The data analysis involved calculating Simpson's Diversity Index to measure cognitive diversity levels, Cohen's Kappa to assess the inter-rater agreement on speaking ability scores, and Pearson's correlation analysis to determine the relationship between cognitive diversity and speaking ability. Findings revealed a positive but weak correlation (r=0.244, p=0.193) between the variables. While aligning with some prior research on individual cognitive differences in language acquisition, the modest correlation contradicts other findings on cognitive styles' influence on speaking ability among EFL learners. This dissimilarity may arise from sample size, student population characteristics, and other factors like instructional approaches and affective variables. The study emphasizes the importance of taking cognitive diversity into account, along with other factors, to optimize holistic development in EFL-speaking.

Abstract

The discussion section of a research article serves to explain and highlight the importance of the study’s results in relation to the existing knowledge surrounding the research problem. This section should be given more attention since the researcher would give his ideas through his own words and sentences. Accordingly, this research attempts to discover the sentence length and pattern in the discussion section of a research article by international authors in applied linguistics published in international journals. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative study to discover and describe the data. The total number of articles in this study was 30 from six international accredited journals sites indexed by corpus (Q1). The first result indicated that the most frequent types were Medium and Long sentences. It may imply that the authors are willing to write efficient sentences by combining two or more simple sentences to deliver ideas more informatively. The second result indicated that the most frequent types of sentence patterns were Simple and Complex sentences. The authors tended to make simple sentences to help the readers understand the ideas and thought more easily. The authors created complex sentences to make the discussion more efficient and to avoid the redundant of the same sentences or repetition. The third result indicated that RELC articles had the highest frequency of long sentences among all five different journals. The fourth result indicated that RELC articles had the lowest frequency of simple sentences and a relatively frequent number of complex sentences among the five different journals. In contrast, GEMA articles had the highest frequency of simple sentences and a relatively small number of complex sentences. In conclusion, even though the five journals are classified as Quartile 1, they still had differences.
