Abstract

This study investigates polysemy in Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” using a non-empirical qualitative design grounded in lexical semantics. The research aims to identify polysemous lexical items, examine their contextual meanings, and analyze their semantic functions in shaping lyrical interpretation. Data were obtained from the official song lyrics and analyzed through descriptive textual analysis involving lexical identification, contextual classification, and semantic interpretation. The findings reveal that numerous lexical items such as “shape,” “heart,” “fall,” and “touch” exhibit systematic meaning extensions between literal and metaphorical domains. Context plays a crucial role in determining meaning selection, allowing lexical ambiguity to function as a controlled interpretive mechanism. The study further shows that polysemy contributes to aesthetic structuring, emotional intensification, and communicative efficiency within the lyrics. These functions demonstrate that lexical meaning in song discourse is dynamically constructed rather than fixed. Overall, polysemy operates as a central semantic strategy that enhances both interpretive depth and artistic expression in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic construction of denotative and connotative meanings in the song lyrics of “Let Her Go” by Passenger through a non-empirical qualitative design grounded in Geoffrey Leech’s theory of meaning. The analysis focuses on how literal lexical references and implied emotional significations interact to produce layered interpretations within lyrical discourse. Data were obtained from the complete song lyrics and analyzed through close reading, semantic categorization, and contextual interpretation. The findings reveal that denotative meanings function as structural anchors that provide literal clarity, while connotative meanings dominate the interpretive dimension by expressing emotional experiences such as regret, loneliness, love, and realization. The study further identifies that repetition, symbolism, metaphor, and binary oppositions such as light and darkness significantly contribute to semantic depth and thematic coherence. Interaction between denotative and connotative layers forms a unified interpretive system that enables emotional resonance and narrative progression. The research concludes that semantic analysis is essential in revealing the complex relationship between literal and emotional meanings in song lyrics.
Beyond the Lyrics: A Semantic Analysis of Hidden Meanings in Ruth B.’s Song “Dandelions Duma Simanjuntak; Bernieke Damanik

Abstract

This study examines the hidden meanings in Ruth B.’s song “Dandelions” through a semantic approach. The study aims to reveal how simple lyrical expressions construct deeper emotional and symbolic meanings beyond their literal interpretation. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes selected lyric lines by focusing on denotative meaning, connotative meaning, metaphor, symbolism, and imagery. The findings show that connotative meaning is the dominant semantic element, indicating that the song communicates its message mainly through implied and emotional meanings rather than direct expression. The word “dandelions” functions symbolically as a representation of fragile hope, wishes, and emotional uncertainty, while the metaphor “I see forever in your eyes” reflects an imagined future and emotional commitment. The analysis also reveals a gradual emotional progression from attraction and idealization to hope, longing, and uncertainty. These findings suggest that the simplicity of the lyrics does not reduce their semantic richness; instead, it strengthens the emotional accessibility of the song. Therefore, this study confirms that popular song lyrics can be examined as meaningful linguistic texts that reflect human emotions, personal desires, and hidden layers of meaning.
Understanding Meaning in the Short Story “The Open Window” by Saki Through Contextual Analysis Mutiara Angelica Sinaga; Bernieke Damanik

Abstract

This study carries out a contextual analysis of Saki’s short story, “The Open Window,” employing a four-layer analytical framework that integrates historical-biographical, socio-cultural, linguistic-pragmatic, and narrative-structural dimensions of meaning. One of the potential limitations of using meaning as a foundational element in a literary analysis is that meaning is always embedded in a specific context. Thus, the study attempts to pinpoint the definitive meaning of the story in relation to its situational and psychological context. A qualitative descriptive approach is employed, drawing on selective dialogue and narrative analysis. Data relevant to contextual analysis are primarily drawn from semantics and pragmatics, with particular attention to Gricean maxim violations as mechanisms of communicative deception. The Open Window is ironically meaningful, and this meaning mostly hinges on the context and the characters’ points of view. There are contextual elements in the story that the author intentionally leaves unexplained, inviting readers to engage in active inferential interpretation. The findings demonstrate that meaning in the story is produced not through any single analytical lens but through the dynamic interaction of all four contextual layers. Contextual analysis thus offers a productive perspective on meaning that is not explicitly stated in the text, and this constitutes a valid justification for employing the technique in the analysis of literary works.
Constructing Emotional Meaning Through Deixis: A Semantic Analysis of Deictic Expressions in Adele’s "Someone Like You” Kristin Permata Sari Manalu; Bernieke Anggita Ristia Damanik

Abstract

This research examines how deictic markers in Adele’s well‑known song "Someone Like You" generate emotional significance through a semantic lens. Using a mixed approach that combines qualitative identification and quantitative frequency counts, the study isolates five categories of deixis—person, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social—within the lyric text. The analysis tracks how each type shifts its reference according to the song’s narrative context and maps those shifts onto the emotional states expressed across verses, chorus, bridge, and outro. The findings show that person deixis (I, you, someone) appears most often, building both intimacy and psychological distance. Temporal markers (never mind, sometimes) evoke nostalgia and regret, while spatial terms (here, there) mark emotional separation. Discourse connectors (but, so, and) weave the lyrical fragments into a coherent story, and a clear shift in deictic center moves the listener’s perspective from observer to dialogue participant to solitary reflector. These results confirm that deixis operates as a core semantic device for constructing affective meaning in popular music, directly answering the research questions about how context‑dependent reference produces the song’s emotional arc from longing to acceptance. Practically, songwriters and music educators can apply deictic mapping to enhance emotional storytelling or to teach language‑emotion interplay in lyrics. Future comparative studies across musical genres or languages are suggested to test the generalizability of these patterns.

Abstract

This study investigates how context shapes the interpretation of meaning in language from a semantic perspective. While traditional semantics often focuses on the relationship between linguistic forms and their inherent meanings, this research emphasizes that meaning cannot be fully understood without considering contextual factors. The study aims to explore how different types of context—linguistic, situational, and cultural—interact to influence meaning construction and interpretation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes selected examples from both written and spoken discourse to identify how context contributes to meaning disambiguation and pragmatic understanding. The findings demonstrate that context plays a decisive role in resolving lexical and structural ambiguity, guiding inference, and aligning interpretation with speaker intention. In particular, the study highlights that identical linguistic expressions may yield different meanings depending on contextual conditions. The study concludes that context is not a peripheral element but a central component in semantic interpretation. Incorporating contextual analysis enhances the accuracy of meaning interpretation and supports more effective communication. These findings have important implications for linguistic theory, language teaching, translation studies, and discourse analysis, where sensitivity to context is essential for achieving clarity and precision.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings in Instagram captions as a form of user-generated content. The problem addressed in this study was how literal and implied meanings are used in digital communication. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a semantic analysis approach. The data were taken from five Instagram captions posted by public figures. The findings show that connotative meaning is more dominant than denotative meaning. Short captions can convey complex meanings through metaphor, symbolism, and ambiguity. It is concluded that meaning in social media, especially Instagram, is flexible and highly influenced by context and user interpretation.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types of lexical relations found in the song “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” by The Script and examines how these relations contribute to the song's overall meaning and emotional message. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through repeated listening to the song and systematic transcription of its lyrics. The analysis draws on the semantic theories of Yule (2010) and Lyons (1977) to identify and interpret three types of lexical relations: repetition, antonymy, and synonymy. The findings reveal that repetition is the most dominant lexical relation, appearing in more than 30 instances across eight distinct recurring phrases, functioning to reinforce the speaker's emotional persistence and unwavering devotion. Antonymy is found in ten contrasting pairs such as "broke" versus "broken-hearted" and "move on" versus "not moving" which highlight the emotional conflict at the heart of the song. Synonymy is identified in seven sets of near-synonymous words and phrases that create lexical variety while sustaining consistent meaning. These lexical relations collectively construct a rich semantic landscape that amplifies the song's themes of love, loyalty, and longing. The study concludes that lexical relations are powerful tools for meaning-making in song lyrics and that songs offer valuable material for semantic analysis in linguistics education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze referential and contextual meanings in the song Lose You to Love Me performed by Selena Gomez. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to examine how meaning is constructed within song lyrics. Referential meaning refers to the direct relationship between words and real-world entities, while contextual meaning is influenced by emotional, situational, and experiential factors. The data were collected from the official lyrics of the song and analyzed using semantic theories proposed by George Yule and Geoffrey Leech. The findings indicate that contextual meaning is more dominant than referential meaning. Many expressions in the lyrics are metaphorical and reflect emotional experiences such as heartbreak, self-reflection, and personal growth. The study concludes that understanding song lyrics requires contextual interpretation beyond literal meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze political risk lexis in the BBC News article entitled “Trump's Confidence Is Undimmed – But Every Iran Option Comes with Risk.” The focus of this research is to identify the lexical items related to political risk and examine their meanings using a lexical semantic approach. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design, as it seeks to interpret the meanings of words within their context rather than to quantify data. The data are taken from a BBC News article and collected using a documentation technique by identifying words and phrases that represent political risk. The analysis reveals that several key lexical items, such as risk, threat, danger, uncertainty, and escalation, are used to construct the concept of political risk in the text. These lexical items are analyzed based on their denotative, connotative, and contextual meanings. The findings show that risk is the most dominant lexical item, supported by other related words that emphasize different dimensions of political instability. Furthermore, the study finds that these lexical items function not only to describe events but also to emphasize uncertainty, construct a perception of danger, and influence readers’ interpretations of the political situation. In addition, the study demonstrates that lexical choices play a crucial role in media discourse, particularly in framing political issues. The use of political risk lexis in the article contributes to constructing a narrative of instability and complexity in the United States–Iran conflict. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of lexical semantic analysis in understanding how language is used to shape meaning and influence public perception in media texts.
