Abstract

A prevalent issue among the elderly is cognitive deterioration. Modifications in behavior and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle have been demonstrated to mitigate cognitive decline in the elderly. The objective of community service initiatives is to disseminate knowledge regarding cognitive health in the elderly and to offer brain workouts to the community, particularly targeting women who are PKK activists in Mliwis Village. This community service initiative employs an instructional methodology that incorporates PowerPoint presentations and leaflets, utilizing a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The event took place at the Posyandu Sidorejo in Mliwis Village, Boyolali. The target audience for this activity was PKK mothers in Mliwis Village, Boyolali Regency, Central Java. To measure the level of knowledge about cognitive health, a questionnaire developed by the community service team was used. This activity consisted of six stages, namely opening, pretest, education, group brain exercises, discussion, and post-test. 51 participants, comprising PKK mothers, attended this activity. The most extensive age range was 31-40 years old, with 16 (31.4%) participants, and the largest occupation was housewife, with 36 (70.6%) participants. The education and discussion activities went well. The enthusiasm of the participants also increased with the joint brain exercises. The average pretest and posttest scores were 90.26 ± 10.78 and 93.68 ± 7.50, respectively. There was a significant difference in knowledge between the pretest and post-test measurements (p = 0.034; < 0.05). It is hoped that this educational activity will help form independent and happy elderly people.

Abstract

This is an analysis of the tree community’s composition and structure of Bukit Badindiang sacred forest in Nagari Simpang, Pasaman West Sumatera. The study aims to (1) to obtain a representative account of the structure and composition of tree community of the sacred forest, (2) to estimate the Aboveground Carbon Stock (C-Stock) accumulated on it. A one-hectare plot was divided into 25 subplots of 20 m × 20 m each for tree and debris data collection. In each subplots, there would be a 5m x 5m sapling subplots and 1m x 1m seedling, understorey plant and litter subplots were nested inside. A total of 446 trees were recorded, representing 139 species from 49 families with a total basal area of 38.59 m2. The most dominant tree species was Campnosperma auriculata [Importance Value (IV) of 19.19]. The other prevalent species were Ficus benjamina (IV =16.50) and Mallotus caudatus (IV =14.78). A total of 62 species (44.6%) was considered locally rare with density of 1 tree/ha. Mallotus caudatus had the highest density (37 trees/ha) and Ficus benjamina had the highest Basal Area (BA) (5.61 m2 = 14.51% of the total). Euphorbiaceae (IV= 37.40) was the dominant family. The richest families were Euphorbiaceae (10) and Lauraceae (10). The total estimated Aboveground C-Stock was 190.62 MgC/ha, with the highest C was contributed by trees (178.85 MgC/ha or 93.8% of total). Trees with diameter class of 10 – 69.99 cm stored 62% of total tree carbon. The species richness, tree density and C-Stock of Bakit Badindiang sacred forest were relatively higher than those in several disturbed lowland forests in Sumatera.

Abstract

This study investigated the potential use of rejected soybean milk as a raw material for producing liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) for hydroponic cultivation. The research was designed as a laboratory-based experimental study. The LOF was formulated from soybean milk waste, spent mushroom baglog, turmeric, and garlic through anaerobic fermentation. It was then characterized based on sensory and chemical properties and applied to hydroponically cultivated water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) over a 9-week growth period. Sensory evaluation showed that the resulting LOF was a brownish-orange, free-flowing, and odorless liquid, indicating the occurrence of humification processes during fermentation. Chemical analysis revealed low macronutrient concentrations, with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents of 0.18%, 0.003%, and 0.16%, respectively. These values were below the Indonesian National Standard for liquid organic fertilizer. The LOF also had an alkaline pH of 8.32. Plant growth trials demonstrated a progressive decline in growth performance as the proportion of soybean-milk-based LOF increased. The AB Mix treatment consistently produced superior results across all growth parameters, including plant height, leaf number, and leaf size. Plants treated with the LOF generally exhibited yellowish-green leaves and reduced vegetative vigor, although survival remained 100% across all treatments. These findings indicate that rejected soybean milk can be valorized into a physically stable LOF; however, the current formulation provides insufficient plant-available nutrients and may induce plant stress due to its high pH and the potential phytotoxic effects of turmeric and garlic extracts. Further optimization through nutrient enrichment, pH adjustment, and controlled additive concentrations is therefore required to develop soybean-milk-based LOF as a viable alternative to synthetic AB Mix for hydroponic cultivation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the diversity and analyze the distribution of mosses (Bryophyte) in various types of habitats in the Girimanik Nature Forest Area (NFA). The main issue in this research is the limited data on the identification and distribution of moss along the spring trails in the area. The method used is exploratory research with a descriptive qualitative approach through systematic line sampling, observation, and species identification in the laboratory. The types of habitats observed were pine forests, mixed forests, coffee plantations, and river areas. The results show that 682 individual mosses were found, belonging to 40 species, 22 families, and 29 genera, with the dominant group being leafy mosses (Bryopsida). The distribution of species shows differences in each habitat, with river areas and pine forests having higher diversity compared to coffee plantations and mixed forests. This pattern is supported by the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), which indicates moderate diversity in pine forests (H' = 2.41) and river areas (H' = 2.32), lower diversity in mixed forests (H' = 2.08), and the lowest diversity in coffee plantations (H' = 1.72), while the overall habitat shows a high diversity value (H' = 3.15). These differences are influenced by environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, soil pH, and substrate availability. The conclusion of this study is that the diversity and distribution of mosses are greatly influenced by environmental conditions, with variation in diversity levels across habitats reflecting the role of microenvironmental gradients in shaping bryophyte community structure.

Abstract

Litter is a fragment of aboveground carbon stocks, a vital bridge to the belowground carbon cycle. Land conversion to agricultural purposes will affect litter production. This study aimed to compare the litter production of natural forests with cocoa-based agroforestry systems (AFS) in West Sumatra. Litter production was measured in five different types of ecosystems, namely natural forest (NF), cocoa-rubber-based AFS (CR), multistrata cocoa-based AFS (CM), cocoa-coconut-based AFS (CC), and cocoa monoculture (M). This study is quantitative research with the collection method. The difference in litter production between the five ecosystems observed was tested using ANOVA parametric statistical method. Litter was collected monthly for one year in which litter traps were evenly distributed in each research plot. Ecosystems of NF and M produced the highest annual litter (6.04 Mg ha-1 and 4.65 Mg ha-1 respectively), while CR produced the lowest one (2.52 Mg ha-1). Although this study did not perform comprehensive modeling of decomposition dynamics, the measurement of annual litter production can provide a further understanding of the dynamics of ecosystem carbon, especially in cocoa-based agroforestry.
