Abstract

Gout disease, also known as gouty arthritis, is a condition characterized by elevated blood uric acid levels, typically above 7.5 mg/dL. This occurs due to a disruption in purine metabolism that triggers an increase in uric acid. This disease is a degenerative condition that affects the joints and is most commonly found in the community, particularly among the elderly. The implementation of community service was carried out in Kampung Biru, Kampung Melayu sub-district. The number of community service members was 24. The purpose of this community service was to provide education and drug information services, as well as guidance on how to take medication correctly, to increase public awareness about gout and its management. The stages carried out were providing a pre-test, followed by an educational presentation using media in the form of leaflets, health checks, and drug information services provided by the community service team. General practitioners issued prescriptions, and a post-test was subsequently administered. The average results obtained during the pre-test were 3.75, and the post-test results were 4.05. These results indicate an increase in knowledge before and after receiving education, with a positive impact on participants regarding the importance of health awareness.

Abstract

A wound is a disorder of skin integrity caused by physical trauma or disease. Wound healing is a natural restorative response to tissue injury. It is a complex dynamic physiological process involving several overlapping phases. Although wound management has been applied, however, some time it is associated withmajor drawbak including invasiveness, antibiotic resistance, and high costs. Natural medicines are being developed for wound management to resolve the drawback. Commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis was proven to play a role in natural wound healing process. This study aimed to investigate the wound healingactivity of a topical gel preparation containing S. epidermidis isolate extract on an incision wound model in rats. The methanol extract of S. epidermidis isolate was prepared by maceration and used as an active ingredient of the topical gel using NaCMC as a gelling agent. A physical stability test was carried out by assessingorganoleptic properties, pH value, homogeneity, dispersion, and viscosity of the gel preparation. The gel preparation was then topically applied once-daily for 11 d on incision wound model of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The wound healing was observed daily and calculated using Morton’s formula. Nosignificant change in the physical stability parameters of the gel preparation was observed during observation on day 1, 7, and 14 (p>0.05). A significant increase in wound healing after the application of the gel preparation compared to negative control was observed (p<0.05). In contrast, no significant difference inwound healing between the gel preparation and the positive control group was observed (p>0.05). In conclusion, the topical gel preparation from S. epidermidis isolate extract accelerates healing on incision wound models in rats.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were threefold: (1) to formulate Bajakah Tampala extract (Spatholobus littoralis) into a stable transdermal gel with variations in gelling agent and penetration enhancer concentrations; (2) to evaluate the physical characteristics of the resulting transdermal gel; and (3) to determine the anti-inflammatory efficacy of the gel in a white mouse model. The study hypothesizes that there is no significant difference in anti-inflammatory activity between the transdermal gel and the negative control, and that the gel formulation does not fully meet all standard evaluation parameters, such as thickness. A laboratory experimental design with pre-test and post-test approaches was employed using twenty-two male white rats (Rattus norvegicus), aged 2–3 months and weighing 200–250 grams. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test. Results indicated that the transdermal gel exhibited good and stable physical characteristics, with a homogeneous texture, skin-compatible pH (5.2–6.2), and the ability to withstand over 400 folds without damage. Formulas containing penetration enhancers (F2 and F3) demonstrated superior pH stability and weight uniformity compared to F1. In vivo testing revealed that F2 and F3 reduced edema to 0.30–0.31 mL, nearly matching the positive control (diclofenac sodium, 0.45 mL). These findings suggest that the incorporation of penetration enhancers significantly improves the gel’s ability to deliver Bajakah extract and suppress inflammatory responses.

Abstract

Abstract

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) have increased significantly every year. Approximately 70-80% of these infections involve biofilms. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of nano spray formula of kelubut leaf extract in inhibiting and eradicating biofilm formation on catheters. Kelubut (Passiflora foetida L.) leaf extract was obtained through maceration process to obtain useful compounds. Antibiofilm activity was assessed using microbroth dilution, with scanning electron microscopy for visualization. The nano spray formulation activity of kelubut (Passiflora foetida L.) leaf extract was able to inhibit biofilm growth by (77.74% ± 0.01), while ciprofloxacin was slightly more effective with a value of (80.22% ± 0.01). SEM analysis confirmed the ability of the kelubut leaf extract nanospray formulation to inhibit and damage Escherichia coli biofilms. The nano spray formulation of kelubut leaf extract (Passiflora foetida L.) coded NS1 is able to inhibit biofilm formation activity on catheters and has the potential to be developed as an antibiofilm candidate against bacteria that cause urinary tract infections.
