Abstract

The Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) is an essential topic for high school student’s fundamental understanding of 3D shapes of chemical compounds. Due to the spatial aspect of the topic, the students were forced to imagine the geometry of the molecule by predicting the free or bonded electron pair repulsion. Suitable learning media to accommodate those features should be precisely selected to help students properly understand the geometry of the molecule based on the VSEPR topic. This study compared the significant difference in the application of two media of animation video and interactive simulation toward the control and experimental groups, respectively, to enhance conceptual mastery of the VSEPR topic. This study was a statistical quasi-experiment study with two classes of control (animation video) and experimental (interactive simulation) groups. The results of the significant difference test of the groups showed that the distribution of the experimental and control groups was not normal (significantly different) and normal (not significantly different), respectively. Analysis results using Mann-Whitney for the non-parametric free two samples comparative test with a 95% confidence level showed that the application of virtual simulation on the experimental group impacted more in improving the conceptual mastery of the VSEPR topic. Furthermore, there was an identified significant improvement in sub-concepts of the VSEPR topic in binding pair, molecular shape, and electron repulsion. These findings could support the teachers in designing lesson plans for students to master the VSEPR topic.

Abstract

Developing critical and creative thinking skills is essential for prospective science teachers to address complex scientific problems and design effective integrated science learning. This study aimed to evaluate the critical and creative thinking skills of prospective science teachers, particularly on energy and its integration with other scientific topics. A total of 76 prospective science teachers from a university in East Java, Indonesia, participated in the study. Data were collected using essay tests, observation sheets, and interviews, with critical thinking indicators based on the Ennis framework and creative thinking indicators based on the Guilford framework. The data were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that students' critical and creative thinking skills were generally in the low category across most indicators. In critical thinking, difficulties were observed in areas such as inference, advanced clarification, and strategy formulation. Similarly, in creative thinking, low scores were evident in fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration indicators. These findings highlight the urgent need for instructional innovations and targeted interventions to enhance critical and creative thinking skills among prospective science teachers. Strengthening these skills is crucial for preparing future educators capable of designing and implementing effective integrated science learning strategies. Further research is recommended to explore instructional models and scaffolding techniques that can better support the development of these competencies across diverse scientific topic.

Abstract

This research examines natural dyes' chemical and physical characteristics for potential use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Chlorophyll pigments were extracted from two macroalgae species, Caulerpa racemosa and Gymnogongrus flabelliformis, and analyzed using absorbance spectroscopy, band gap energy calculations, and dye-sensitized solar cell performance evaluation. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) characterisation was used to identify the pigments contained in the dye. The absorbance spectra of chlorophyll pigments extracted from both macroalgae species showed broad peaks at 400–800 nm wavelengths, with Gymnogongrus flabelliformis showing the highest absorbance peak at 403 nm. The redox potential analysis for both macroalgae species showed energy gaps (HOMO/LUMO) of 1.3 eV, 1.4 eV, 2.3 eV, and 2.4 eV, respectively, indicating that these natural dyes are suitable for use in DSSC applications. DSSC devices were fabricated using components such as liquid electrolyte, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO₂) photoelectrode, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as counter electrode, and ITO glass as conductive substrate. Meanwhile, to evaluate how well the photovoltaic system worked, we looked at short-circuit current density (Jsc), open circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF), and overall photoelectric conversion efficiency (η). The results showed that the highest performance for Gymnogongrus flabelliformis was Jsc 0.041 mA/cm², Voc 0.28 V, FF 0.239, and η 0.020%, while the highest performance of Caulerpa racemosa was Jsc 0.023 mA/cm², Voc 0.46 V, FF 0.244, and η 0.019%. These findings indicate the potential for using and developing natural dyes derived from these two macroalgae species in DSSC technology. This research offers insight into the feasibility of marine-derived pigments as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for photovoltaic applications.
