Abstract

In Islam, prayer (salat) is a fundamental obligation that must be performed under all circumstances, including during illness. Muslim patients have high spiritual needs, in which religious practices serve as a source of strength in coping with disease. Although Islam provides concessions (rukhsah) in performing prayer for the sick, limitations in patients’ understanding of how to perform prayer according to their health conditions are still found. This lack of knowledge may affect the proper practice of prayer during hospitalization. Therefore, this study aims to identify patient characteristics related to the practice of prayer, to examine the level of knowledge of the five daily prayers in relation to their practice among patients, and to analyze patients’ overall level of knowledge regarding prayer. This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The results show that patient characteristics, particularly productive age and higher educational level, contribute to their ability to perform prayer during hospitalization. A significant relationship was found between the level of knowledge of prayer and its practice, where better understanding was associated with more optimal religious practice. Overall, most patients had a high level of knowledge of prayer, although a small proportion still had low knowledge, indicating the need for spiritual education. It can be concluded that the level of knowledge of prayer is associated with the quality of prayer practice among Muslim patients at RSUD Haji Makassar. Strengthening spiritual education is needed to support the fulfillment of patients’ religious needs during hospitalization.

Abstract

The increasing consumption of fast food among adolescents has become an important public health concern due to its association with nutritional problems, particularly overweight and obesity. Fast food is generally high in calories, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium but low in essential nutrients. Combined with inadequate physical activity, these dietary habits may increase the risk of adverse health outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the effect of fast food consumption on nutritional status and physical activity among students. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 81 senior high school students were recruited using a total sampling technique. Fast food consumption was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), physical activity was evaluated using a structured physical activity questionnaire, and nutritional status was determined based on Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI-for-age). Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 95% (α=0.05). The results showed that 81.5% of respondents had a low frequency of fast food consumption, while 18.5% frequently consumed fast food. Approximately 45.7% of respondents had normal nutritional status, whereas the remaining participants were classified as underweight, overweight, or obese. Bivariate analysis demonstrated a significant association between fast food consumption and nutritional status (p=0.000). However, no statistically significant association was found between fast food consumption and physical activity (p=0.438). In conclusion, fast food consumption significantly affects adolescents' nutritional status but is not significantly associated with their physical activity. Strengthening school-based nutrition education, promoting balanced dietary habits, and reducing fast food consumption are recommended to prevent nutritional problems among adolescents.

Abstract

The third trimester is a phase of pregnancy that is prone to increased anxiety before delivery, and spirituality is thought to play an essential role in helping to reduce this anxiety. This study aims to analyze the relationship between spirituality levels and anxiety levels in pregnant women in the third trimester. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach and was conducted at RSIA Sitti Khadijah 1, Muhammadiyah Branch, Makassar, from November 10 to December 8, 2025. This study employed a total sampling approach to recruit 31 pregnant women in the third trimester who met the inclusion criteria. Spirituality levels were measured using the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES), and anxiety levels were measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). The results showed that most respondents had minimal anxiety levels (77.4%) and high spirituality levels (83.9%). The correlation test results showed a significant relationship between spirituality levels and anxiety levels (p = 0.000). This study suggests that higher spirituality is associated with lower anxiety levels. Therefore, it can be concluded that spirituality plays a vital role in helping pregnant women manage anxiety before childbirth and can be considered as part of a holistic approach to antenatal care.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to identify the antibacterial activity of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) extract against Staphylococcus aureus using the broth dilution method. The experiment was conducted at the UP3M Research Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muslim Indonesia, Makassar, using a true experimental post-test design. The extract samples were tested at five concentrations (5%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%) to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). The results revealed that all concentrations inhibited bacterial growth, as indicated by clear media after 24-hour incubation at 37°C, demonstrating inhibitory effects even at the lowest concentration (5%). The MBC was observed at 60%, where no bacterial colonies grew on Nutrient Agar (NA). These findings indicate that purple sweet potato extract exhibits strong antibacterial activity, with bacteriostatic effects at low concentrations and bactericidal effects at higher concentrations. The bioactive compounds—anthocyanins, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics—play crucial roles in disrupting bacterial membranes, interfering with metabolism, and inactivating enzymes. Therefore, purple sweet potato extract has promising potential as a natural antibacterial agent for treating infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
