Abstract

Low reading engagement can affect the quality of young children’s literacy experiences. Although literacy activities have been implemented in kindergarten classrooms, limitations in reading media and the lack of contextual learning materials remain challenges in sustaining children’s attention and participation during reading activities. This study aimed to analyze teachers’ and students’ needs regarding the development of SDG 11 integrated reading media to support reading engagement in kindergarten. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design and was conducted in Class B1 at Undiksha Kindergarten Lab School. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students showed interest at the beginning of reading activities, however, their engagement, attention, and participation tended to decline as the activities progressed. The limited availability and variety of reading materials, the small size of existing storybooks, and difficulties in understanding unfamiliar vocabulary were identified as factors influencing students’ reading engagement. The findings also showed that shared reading activities were conducted but had not yet been implemented regularly, while reading materials integrating SDG 11 themes were not available in the classroom. Furthermore, the teacher expressed the need for visually appealing, interactive, and developmentally appropriate reading media to support literacy learning. These findings indicate the need to develop SDG 11 integrated reading media that can support shared reading activities, enhance reading engagement, and introduce sustainable cities and communities concepts to young children.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for developing a Big Book based on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 (Life on Land) to support English learning for preschool children through shared reading activities at TK Lab Undiksha. This study was conducted as a preliminary stage in the development of learning media that integrates environmental awareness with early English learning. A qualitative descriptive design was used to identify learning needs, classroom conditions, student characteristics, and teacher’s expectations regarding the use of Big Books in English instruction. The study participants included teacher and preschool students at TK Lab Undiksha. Data were collected through classroom observation and interview. The findings indicate that early childhood learners demonstrate a high level of interest in visual and interactive learning materials, particularly those featuring colorful illustrations, repetitive language patterns, and simple vocabulary. However, current English learning materials remain limited in their integration of environmental education themes, specifically SDG 15 (Life on Land). Teacher also expressed a need for engaging, age-appropriate learning media that can enhance students’ vocabulary mastery, participation, and reading engagement during shared reading activities. This study concludes that the development of an SDG 15-based Big Book holds great potential to support English learning for preschool children while fostering environmental awareness through meaningful and interactive shared reading practices.

Abstract

Background: Along with the development of sociolinguistic studies and language education, the orientation of research and learning practices is shifting from a monolingual approach to a more inclusive multilingual framework. In this context, translanguaging is seen as a communicative practice that allows individuals to use the entirety of their linguistic resources dynamically to build meaning, form identity, and establish social relationships. Purpose: This study aims to explore the practice of translanguaging within English Area communities that function as Community of Practice (CoP), focusing on the role of such practices in strengthening social cohesion as well as in the identity negotiation process between core members and outsiders of the community. Method: This research applies ethnographic case study approach. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and review of community documents involving various actors, ranging from core administrators, active members, new members, former members, to external observers. Data analysis was conducted using Thematic Analysis to reveal patterns of language use, linguistic norms that develop, and the dynamics of social identity formation in the community. Results and Discussion: Research findings show that the English Area acts as a community of practice that supports the collaborative and sustainable English learning process. The practice of translanguaging not only serves as a pedagogical strategy to facilitate the understanding of the material, but also as an effective strategy that contributes to decreasing language anxiety and increasing member engagement. The use of language in the community is flexible and situational, where English is applied in accordance with the goals of the activity and the level of readiness of the participants. Although the ability to speak English serves as a symbol of membership, the application of language flexibility actually strengthens the sense of community and reduces the potential for social exclusion. Conclusions and Implications: This study confirms that translanguaging plays an important role in language learning, identity formation, and the sustainability of communities of practice, and has implications for the development of more inclusive and contextual English learning practices.
