Abstract

Although many studies have investigated learning loss in the context of online education during the pandemic, few have explored it across diverse educational settings, including hybrid-flexible and offline learning. This research aims to identify and analyze learning loss that occurred during and after the pandemic in Indonesia. Employing a case study approach, it examines the full spectrum of educational experiences during the pandemic era. The study was conducted at a leading school in Denpasar, Bali, involving 192 students and 10 teachers. Data were collected through surveys, observations, and interviews, and analyzed using inductive methods with an emphasis on qualitative insights. Findings indicate that learning loss occurred across all modes of instruction – online, hybrid-flexible, and offline. Importantly, the frequent transitions between these learning modes, rather than the pandemic itself, emerged as the primary driver of learning loss. This study offers a comprehensive perspective on learning loss, outlining its manifestations, underlying causes, and potential mitigation strategies. The findings underscore the urgent need for stable, effective educational policies and targeted interventions to address emerging learning gaps. Given the study's focus on a single high-performing school, further comparative research involving both high-performing and regular schools is recommended to develop a broader and more inclusive understanding. Abstrak: Meskipun banyak penelitian telah menyelidiki penurunan kemampuan belajar (learning loss) dalam konteks pendidikan daring selama pandemi, hanya sedikit penelitian yang meneliti penurunan kemampuan belajar dalam berbagai lingkungan pendidikan, termasuk pembelajaran hibrida-fleksibel dan luring. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis penurunan kemampuan belajar yang terjadi selama dan setelah pandemi di Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus, penelitian ini meneliti seluruh aspek pendidikan di era pandemi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di sekolah unggulan di Denpasar, Bali, dengan mengumpulkan data dari 192 siswa dan 10 guru melalui survei, observasi, dan wawancara. Data dianalisis menggunakan metode induktif dengan fokus pada wawasan kualitatif.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penurunan kemampuan belajar terjadi di berbagai fase pembelajaran—daring, hibrida-fleksibel, dan luring. Studi ini mengungkap bahwa penyebab utama penurunan kemampuan belajar bukanlah karena pandemi, melainkan karena seringnya peralihan antara metode pembelajaran. Penelitian ini memberikan pandangan komprehensif mengenai penurunan kemampuan belajar, termasuk bentuk, penyebab, dan upaya mitigasi yang memungkinkan. Temuan ini menekankan perlunya strategi pendidikan yang stabil dan efektif serta intervensi yang terarah untuk mengatasi kesenjangan pembelajaran. Karena penelitian ini terbatas pada satu sekolah unggulan, disarankan agar penelitian lebih lanjut dilakukan dengan membandingkan penurunan kemampuan belajar di sekolah unggulan dan sekolah reguler untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih luas.

Abstract

Background: The integration of information and communication technology (ICT) has transformed the educational landscape, including translation and interpretation education. Technological advancements, such as machine translators (MT), have driven the need for innovative teaching methods that enhance both the effectiveness of instruction and students' translation skills.Aim: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of teaching translation and interpretation courses using an ICT-integrated and pedagogical approach.Method: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test, involving 26 students selected through random sampling. Data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test to measure significant differences in learning outcomes before and after the implementation of the ICT-based teaching method.Results: The findings indicate that the ICT-integrated and pedagogical approach effectively improves students' translation skills. The paired samples t-test analysis revealed a significant p-value of less than 0.05 (p-value 0.00). Overall, students perceived that the use of Machine Translators (MT) significantly facilitated their translation process, especially when structured practice was provided.Conclusion: The integration of an ICT-based approach in translation instruction has been proven effective in enhancing students' skills. Understanding the concerns and motivations of both students and educators enables curriculum developers to address learning barriers, boost confidence in the use of machine translators, and guide students toward the efficient utilization of technology.

Abstract

This research addresses the critical issue of low student engagement in English language learning among seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Singaraja, where preliminary observations revealed that only 3 out of 32 students actively participated in class discussions. The study aims to develop and implement Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activities to enhance cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement in English language learning. The research employs a mixed-methods developmental approach using the ADDE model (Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation). Data collection methods include classroom observations, structured interviews with teachers and students, questionnaires using both Guttman and Likert scales, document analysis of curriculum materials, and expert judgment evaluations. The study focuses on creating a prototype of PBL activities tailored to address the specific engagement challenges identified in the target classroom. Preliminary findings from the analysis phase indicate that 62.75% of students experience obstacles in cognitive engagement, 58.64% show low emotional engagement, and 34.29% demonstrate minimal behavioral participation. The research expects to demonstrate significant improvements in student engagement through the implementation of authentic, real-world problem-solving activities that encourage critical thinking and collaborative learning. The study's implications extend beyond the immediate classroom context, offering educational practitioners a framework for implementing PBL methodologies to enhance student engagement in English language learning, potentially transforming traditional passive learning environments into dynamic, participatory educational experiences.

Abstract

Permasalahan pada Pokdarwis Purwa Hita yang beranggotakan 41 orang terletak pada aspek sosial kemasyarakatan dan manajemen dalam pengelolaan wisata spiritual melukat, yoga/ meditasi, dan konservasi terumpu karang. Sedangkan Permasalahan pada Karang Taruna dengan 25 anggotanya terletak pada aspek manajemen dan pemasaran public speaking, branding, dan penggunaan sistem digital. Sehingga tujuan program Kosabangsa ini terletak pada upaya menumbuhkembangkan SDM dan SDA yang ada. Metode pelaksanaan dirancang dengan memperhatikan permasalahan yang dihadapi mitra, teknologi yang relevan, dan kemampuan mitra. Adapun metode pelaksanaan dimasing-masing mitra  meliputi: tahap sosialisasi, pelatihan dan diskusi, penerapan Iptek, pendampingan, monitoring, dan evaluasi, dan keberlanjutan program kosabangsa. Hasil yang diperoleh dalam  pengabdian ini, pertama mitra Pokdarwis Purwa Hita berhasil mengembangkan sistem eticketing yang mampu mensingkronisasi wisata spiritual melukat, yoga meditasi, dan konservasi terumbu karang. Kedua pemetaan potensi posisi terumbu karang mampu diwujudkan; Ketiga keberadaan sampah yadnya mampu diolah menjadi pupuk kompos. Sedangkan pada mitra Karang Taruna Dharma Karya berhasil mewujudkan; Pertama, pemetaan pohon lontar; Kedua, pembuatan label branding minuman tradisional arak Pacung; Ketiga, membantu meningkatkan SDM mitra dalam pengelolaan administrasi keuangan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa pendampingan e-ticketing dan portal pacung mampu mensikronisasi obyek wisata wisata spiritual melukat, yoga/ meditasi, konservasi terumpu karang, dan pengelolaan arak pacung.

Abstract

The integration of first and second languages in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, termed translanguaging, is gaining recognition for its potential to improve comprehension and student engagement. This study investigates students’ perceptions of translanguaging in Bali, a unique multilingual setting, and examines its correlation with their English learning achievement. Bali’s sociolinguistic environment, where students frequently use Balinese, Indonesian, and English, offers an ideal context to explore this phenomenon. This study employed a correlational research design, involving 65 fourth-semester students aged 18 to 22, to assess perceptions of translanguaging through a structured questionnaire and their English achievement through standardized tests. Descriptive statistics showed that students held positive perceptions of translanguaging, finding it beneficial for understanding course content and encouraging participation. However, Pearson correlation analysis revealed a minimal, non-significant correlation between students’ positive perceptions and their English learning achievement (r = 0.039, sig. = 0.758). While translanguaging created a supportive and engaging learning environment, its direct influence on academic achievement was limited. These findings suggest that although translanguaging may foster an inclusive and interactive classroom setting, it does not significantly impact measurable language achievement. This study contributes valuable insights into the role of multilingual practices in EFL education and encourages further research on their complex effects on learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study proposed developing micro-learning-based English video materials for junior high school. This study was designed in the form of successive approximation model (SAM) by Allen (2012) to design some phases namely preparation phase, iterative phase, and iterative development phase. The English video materials needed were identified based on the observation, interview the English teacher, and interview the learners. The study found that the lesson plans did not provide learning video materials and the lesson plans did not provide suitable teaching model in learning English. Furthermore, the English teachers used conventional model in teaching and learning process and did not provide learning media to assist them in the teaching and learning process. Based on the interview with the English teachers, the researcher concluded that the learners were still having difficulties to understand materials and they have short memorization in learning English. It could be seen from the result of interview with the English teachers and the learners.  Moreover, the English teachers need the suitable learning media to assist the learners in the learning process. Therefore, the researcher developed three English video materials used the micro-learning concept and combined with three teaching model namely; problem-based learning, project-based learning and discovery-based learning. The effectiveness of the develop English video materials for the learners of junior high school was evaluated using criteria of a good English materials suggested by the formula proposed by Nurkancana and Sunartana (2011). The result showed that the quality of developing micro-learning-based English video materials for junior high school was good. Thus, the micro-learning based English video materials were good to be used as a teaching and learning English video materials for eight grade junior high school students in Denpasar.

Abstract

The study aimed at developing a microlearning video-based discovery learning for teaching English at SMK Pariwisata Nusadua Sidemen. The development was conducted by adopting SAM model. There were three stages; preparation, iterative design, and iterative development. The research subjects were three English teachers and 30 eleventh-grade students at SMK Nusadua Sidemen. The sampling techniques used were purposive and simple random sampling. The data were obtained by conducting an interview, a survey, and document analysis. The research instruments were interviewing guide, questionnaire, and note. The result revealed that the microlearning video-based discovery learning was developed for teaching the expression of asking and giving opinion with good category.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang pengembangan materi pembelajaran berbasis kurikulum kelas XII SMA semester kedua. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengembangan materi pembelajaran dengan menggunakan metode kuisioner kepada perwakilan siswa di dua sekolah, (Sekolah A) dan (Sekolah B) kuisioner disebar melalui google form didapatkan hasil bahwa sekolah A kelas 12 sebagai subjek penelitian didominasi oleh pembelajaran auditori oleh karena itu, siswa kelas 12 sekolah A lebih dominan gaya belajar pendengeran. Sementara itu nilai sekolah B berada di bawah. Berdasarkan hasil angket dibereikan peneliti pada sekolah B, terdapat dua kelas dengan siswa pada setiap kelasnya, sehingga jumlah responden sebanyak 66 siswa. Persentase gaya belajar di sekolah A adalah auditori (33%), baca/tulis (25%), kinestetik (22%), dan visual (19%). Evaluasi materi pembelajaran oleh ahli dan melakukan perbaikan langkah ini merupakan akhir dari ADDE dan dianggap sebagai langkah penutup dalam penelitian pengembangan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang pengembangan materi pembelajaran berbasis kurikulum kelas XI SMA di daerah Buleleng Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengembangan materi pembelajaran gaya VARK dengan menggunakan metode kuisioner kepada perwakilan siswa di dua sekolah (Sekolah A) dan (Sekolah B) ) kuisioner disebar melalui google form didapatkan hasil bahwa sekolah A kelas menunjukan adanya distribusi preferensi belajar yang beragam dikalangan siswa. Data menunjukkan bahwa 30% siswa merupakan pembelajar auditori, 25% pembelajar membaca/menulis, 23% pembelajar kinestetik, dan 22% pembelajar visual. Distribusi yang seimbang ini menggarisbawahi kebutuhan penting untuk mengembangkan materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang memenuhi semua gaya belajar VARK. Pendekatan universal terhadap bahan ajar yang ada saat ini mungkin tidak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan semua siswa secara efektif, sehingga berpotensi menyebabkan 75% siswa kesulitan untuk sepenuhnya terlibat dengan konten jika konten tersebut tidak sesuai dengan gaya belajar utama mereka.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance students' engagement through the development of English learning activities using project-based learning method for grade IX students at SMPN 5 Singaraja. Based on preliminary data students' engagement was low: 73% cognitive, 87% emotional, and 64% behavioural. This research used the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, Evaluation) method, to produce a prototype. As a result, project-based activities were effective in increasing student engagement through relevant tasks, collaboration, and critical thinking. This research provides a practical contribution for teachers in providing innovative learning and impact on students' engagement in English language learning at junior high school level.
