Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has significantly influenced the landscape of higher education, including English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. However, many lecturers still struggle to integrate technology effectively into their pedagogy. This study investigates EFL lecturers’ technological familiarity and knowledge in a maritime higher education context, aiming to identify their level of technological competence and the underlying factors influencing technology use in teaching. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 15 lecturers from a maritime higher education institution in Indonesia. The findings revealed that lecturers possess moderate familiarity with digital tools such as learning management systems and video conferencing platforms. However, their pedagogical integration of technology remains limited, with most using it mainly for material delivery rather than interactive or student-centered learning. The analysis indicates that the lecturers’ technological knowledge (TK) has not yet been sufficiently linked with pedagogical (PK) and content knowledge (CK), as conceptualized in the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. Barriers such as insufficient infrastructure, lack of institutional support, and limited digital pedagogical understanding were found to hinder optimal technology integration. The study suggests that sustainable professional development programs focusing on digital pedagogy and contextualized training are essential to enhance lecturers’ competence in integrating technology for effective EFL instruction in maritime education.

Abstract

This research explores the adaptation of the English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum to address the significant resource limitations faced in rural areas, specifically in Sorong, West Papua, Indonesia. The study aims to investigate how teachers creatively modify lesson plans, instructional methods, and assessment strategies in environments lacking essential resources, such as teaching materials, technological tools, and professional development opportunities and the impact on the students' outcomes. Using a qualitative multi-case study approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis over a two-month period. The findings reveal that teachers employed various strategies to cope with resource constraints, such as simplifying lesson content, utilizing locally available materials, and incorporating peer collaboration in the classroom. These adaptations resulted in enhanced student participation and improvements in oral communication skills. However, significant challenges were observed in fostering literacy, particularly reading and writing skills, due to the scarcity of instructional resources and limited teacher training. Moreover, while short-term engagement and speaking proficiency increased, the long-term impacts on overall English proficiency remained limited. The study underscores the need for comprehensive professional development for rural teachers and better access to teaching materials to fully bridge the educational gap between urban and rural students. Ultimately, these findings offer valuable insights for future curriculum development aimed at improving language education in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess pre-service teachers' competency in teaching English to young learners, with a focus on essential pedagogical and communicative skills. A mixed-methods approach was applied, utilizing quantitative surveys, standardized tests, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations. Data were gathered from 24 pre-service teachers in the English Education Department at the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, UIN Mataram. Quantitative findings from Likert-scale questionnaires and standardized assessments indicate moderate confidence in pedagogical skills but reveal significant gaps in practical application, especially in lesson planning, classroom management, and adapting teaching strategies. The study highlights the need for comprehensive training in crafting age-appropriate lesson plans, employing diverse teaching styles, and establishing effective classroom management. Regarding communication, pre-service teachers were generally comfortable giving instructions and promoting participation but needed improvement in clarifying complex topics, providing constructive feedback, and adapting communication to varied student needs. Qualitative insights reveal that pre-service teachers often feel unprepared for real-world classroom challenges, underscoring the importance of hands-on training that mirrors classroom dynamics. Classroom observations confirm these findings by reflecting variation in instructional and communicative effectiveness. These results emphasize the need for teacher education programs to intensify practical, hands-on training, enhancing readiness for teaching English to young learners and contributing to a more robust foundation in pre-service teacher preparation.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying the measures that EFL teachers take to minimize learners’ anxiety in English learning at MA Arifah Indonesia particularly from the aspect of anxiety and second language acquisition. The study adopted a concurrent triangulation design in which quantitative data was collected from the questionnaires while qualitative data was collected from interviews. The study shows that anxiety arising from fear of negative evaluation, communication apprehension, and test, hurts the students’ performance in speaking activities and academic achievement. Most of the students benefited from approaches adopted by the teacher such as behaviour modification and support from classmates and Gradualiliarly Increasing the Task Difficulty. But as the results of the students’ feedback reveal, it is not enough for the students, especially those with higher levels of anxiety, to employ these methods; therefore, they require other kinds of interventions, including practices based on mindfulness. The study also brings out the impact of worry on test performance, and there is a need to analyse the existing strategies of assessments to provide for the worried students. Such results suggest that EFL education needs to be more comprehensive to include psychological intervention into learners’ mental state and teaching methods that are best suited for these learners in order to introduce change for a better learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of figurative language in the song album “Eternal Sunshine” by Ariana Grande using Perrine's (1982) theory. The analysis method used refers to the semantic approach by considering Leech's (1981) theory to explore the meaning in various types of figurative language. The research data was obtained from the extraction of 29 figurative language sentences consisting of metaphor (2), simile (6), personification (1), hyperbole (11), apostrophe (1), understatement (2), irony (4), and metonymy (2). The analysis also identified two main categories of meaning that are frequently used, namely associative meaning and connotative meaning. This research provides a deep insight into how Ariana Grande uses different types of figurative language to enrich the reader's experience and convey a profound message in “Eternal Sunshine.” Our analysis reveals the album's distinctive use of figurative language, characterized by the prominence of metaphor and hyperbole. While previous research on albums such as “Thank you, next” by DeniArnita Hulu and “Runaway” by Putu Yoga found similes and metaphors to be the dominant forms of figurative language, our study highlights the dominance of hyperbole in “Eternal Sunshine.” In addition, the novel shows a balanced variety of figurative techniques and a clear distinction between associative and connotative meanings. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of literature and the use of figurative language in modern literary works. Keywords: Figurative Language; Perrine; Leech; Song; Eternal Sunshine
