Abstract

This study investigates how Nina Riva resolves her psychological conflicts in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Malibu Rising by employing Kurt Lewin’s theory of Positive, Negative, and Induced Valence. The research aims to reveal how inner struggles and emotional tensions shape the protagonist’s transformation and self-realization. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on the novel’s narrative structure, character interactions, and dialogues that illustrate the stages of Nina’s psychological development. The findings indicate that Nina predominantly resolves her internal conflicts through Positive and Positive Induced Valences, allowing her to attain emotional balance and personal growth. Negative valence also appears as an initial catalyst that triggers her self-awareness before she redirects it into constructive action. The study highlights that inner conflict in literature not only reflects human psychological processes but also functions as a narrative strategy to portray resilience, autonomy, and identity formation. This research contributes to the broader discussion of literary psychology by demonstrating how Lewin’s theoretical lens can deepen understanding of character motivation and emotional evolution in contemporary fiction.

Abstract

Semiotics in general is a sign, symbol, and meaning that exists in our daily lives. Especially in gestures which are also related to gestures and semiotics. Gestures are nonverbal movements with the aim of communicating. The bond between semiotics and gestures here is to be able to understand the meaning of these nonverbal movements so that communication can be smoother. This research uses Mcneill's theory (2005) to find out what types of gestures will be in the nonverbal scenes in the movie “The Silence”. And also this research uses the triadic triangle theory in Charles Sanders Peirce's theory to determine the meaning or meaning of the movements that appear in the scene in the movie. This analysis aims to know more about gestures in the semiotic approach. This research uses descriptive qualitative with Visual Research Method or VRM as a supporting method. According to the results of the analysis, researchers found several types of gestures from 13 Iconic, 4 Metaphoric, 10 Deictic, and 2 for Beat data. There are 28 data observed, we concluded that gestures are very important for our daily lives, because the feelings that come out of body movements never lie. Gestures can also complement verbal communication, and for the communication of people who use sign language. We also concluded that gestures in everyday life found in the movie “The Silence” have no differences in our daily gestures in communicating in Indonesian and American culture.

Abstract

This study explores how hyperbolic expressions in the lyrics of Radiohead’s OK Computer represent depression and influence listeners' perceptions of mental health. Using psychological theories from Edward Bibring and Sigmund Freud, alongside Hans Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic approach, the research examines how exaggerated phrases intensify themes of overwhelming mental struggle, invasive thoughts, despair, and alienation. These hyperbolic expressions vividly portray the emotional chaos and isolation of depression, making it more relatable for listeners. The findings show that these expressions evoke strong emotional responses, deepening empathy and shaping listeners' understanding of depression. This study highlights the role of music in influencing public perceptions of mental health.

Abstract

Abstract

The introduction chapter is a critical hurdle for graduate students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. It functions as a persuasive overture that must establish significance, delineate a clear scholarly gap, and articulate the study's purpose. This article provides a pedagogical framework for students and supervisors on constructing a high-quality research introduction. Drawing on genre analysis, specifically Swales’s Create a Research Space (CARS) model, the guide deconstructs the essential rhetorical moves for a compelling argument. Through a comparative analysis of strong and weak examples, it illustrates common pitfalls and effective strategies. The core of the article discusses the unique challenges faced by EFL scholars in contexts like Indonesia, proposing a scaffolded pedagogical model to improve research writing instruction. The aim is to equip emerging scholars with the conceptual tools and practical strategies to architect an introduction that meets the rigorous standards of international academic discourse.

Abstract

This study examines students' perceptions of content differentiation in teaching descriptive text at Negeri 1 Gowa High School. The study involved students of class X.2 with a qualitative approach through interviews, and observations. The results show that students generally perceive differentiated content positively. They believe that the use of visual media such as videos and images helps them better understand descriptive text. Gradually increasing the level of difficulty makes them feel more confident and less overwhelmed. Students also feel more motivated when the topics are interesting and delivered through interactive methods such as games, group discussions, and multimedia. Many students expressed their hope that teachers will continue to implement such engaging and personalized learning approaches in the future. For future research, it is recommended to examine the implementation or effectiveness of content differentiation in descriptive text materials and use contextual learning methods to increase students' understanding, enthusiasm and comfort in learning.

The study aimed to discover (1) The socio-afffective strategies students use in learning speaking skills. (2) How students applied the socio-affective strategies in learning speaking skills. This study is a type of qualitative research that uses qualitative descriptive methods to collect the data. Interviews and documentation were used as the instruments to collect the data. Five students were selected as participants by using a purposive random sampling technique. This study showed that the students used all types of socio-affective strategies: asking questions, cooperating with others, lowering anxiety, self-reinforcement, self-talk, taking someone’ temperature, empathizing with others, and social-mediating. Eventually, among those socio-affective strategies, the students frequently ask questions, cooperate with others, and engage in self-talk.
