Abstract

This qualitative study explores the determinants of culture shock experienced by students participating in the Program Merdeka Mengajar (PMM) at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Using Orlay’s (2021) framework on cultural adaptation, the research investigates the challenges faced by 5 PMM students as they navigate their academic and social environments in a new cultural setting. Through in-depth interviews, the study identifies key factors contributing to culture shock, including language barriers, differences in teaching methodologies, and habit. Findings suggest that these factors significantly impact students' academic performance, mental well-being, and overall adjustment to university life. The study highlights the need for targeted support mechanisms, such as cultural orientation programs and peer mentoring, to mitigate the negative effects of culture shock and promote smoother transitions for future PMM participants. This research contributes to the understanding of cross-cultural challenges in higher education and provides insights for improving the PMM experience at UNM.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the quality of the English textbook Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress for grade X used in the implementation Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia. This book was evaluated using a descriptive quantitative approach with an instrument based on the Cunningsworth (1995) and Al-Sowat (2012) evaluation framework, which covers nine main aspects: layout, content, objectives, language types, language skills, activities, structure and vocabulary, cultural values, and teacher needs. The evaluation results indicate that this book has quite good quality in terms of layout, content, and teacher support, and covers all four language skills in a balanced manner. However, several weaknesses were found, including the lack of integration of cultural values, the suboptimal development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the limited authentic activities that reflect real life. This book also does not fully consider differences in student learning styles and does not provide a means for independent reflection on learning. Therefore, improvements are needed in the development of cultural content, the variety of high-level activities, and the preparation of formative assessments. The results of this study contribute to curriculum developers, textbook writers, and educators in improving the effectiveness of teaching materials that align with the principles of differentiated learning and strengthening 21st century competencies in Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the family socialization function on preventing dating violence among high school students in South Sulawesi. A quantitative approach was used, collecting data through questionnaires from 208 high school students in South Sulawesi. The sampling technique employed was random sampling. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression, t-test, and coefficient of determination. The results showed that the family socialization function significantly prevented dating violence. The coefficient of determination of 0.895 indicates that the socialization function accounts for 89.5% of the variation in dating violence prevention. This study provides important implications for stakeholders, including schools, families, and local governments, to develop targeted strategies for preventing dating violence. The findings highlight the crucial role of adequate family socialization in shaping healthy, non-violent relationships among adolescents. Future research could explore specific socialization strategies and their long-term impacts on relationship dynamics and violence prevention in diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to explore the implementation of Differentiated Instruction (DI) in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of English language (EFL) learning in the Independent Curriculum at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used to explore the perceptions of six teachers and six students through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that learning planning was not fully based on student profiles. Teachers used uniform lesson plans without differentiation of content, process, or product. DI implementation was carried out in a limited and situational manner, such as student grouping or peer tutoring assistance, but was not yet structured. Evaluation was still predominantly summative, without initial or formative assessments that could direct differentiation strategies. Teachers understood DI intuitively, but did not yet have a strong theoretical basis. Students expressed the need for more varied learning methods, according to their interests and learning styles. The main obstacles in implementing DI were time constraints, a large number of students, and minimal training. This study recommends teacher training in differentiation planning and formative assessment integration to support more adaptive and inclusive learning. Keywords: Differentiated Instruction, Merdeka Curriculum, Lesson Planning, Learning Evaluation, EFL

Abstract

Differentiated Instruction (DI) is central to the Merdeka Curriculum's student-centered framework in Indonesia. Despite theoretical support, its practical implementation, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes, remains inconsistent. This qualitative case study investigates both teachers' and students' perceptions of DI in EFL classes at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings reveal that teachers possess intuitive but limited understanding of DI, with partial and situational implementation. Institutional support was reported as general and inadequate, and barriers such as large class sizes and lack of resources hinder effective DI application. Students perceived the learning experience as uniform and lacking in differentiation by learning style or interest. Although supportive teacher behavior was noted, DI aspects such as content, process, product, and environment differentiation were not comprehensively applied. The study concludes with recommendations for enhanced training, infrastructure, and strategic planning to better align DI with Merdeka Curriculum goals.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PJBL) in a speaking class. As an instructional approach centered on student-driven projects, PJBL is intended to enhance learners’ engagement, communication skills, and collaborative learning experiences. The research aims to investigate how students at SMPN 2 Barombong respond to the use of PBL in terms of motivation, participation, language development, and speaking confidence. A qualitative approach was employed, using interviews with students from an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class who had experienced PJBL-based instruction. Data will be collected through in-depth interviews, and documentations with eleventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Barombong using a qualitative research methodology. The findings indicate that students generally perceive PJBL positively, citing increased opportunities to practice speaking in authentic contexts, greater motivation, and improved teamwork skills. However, some students also reported challenges such as time management and unequal group participation. Overall, the study concludes that PBL can be an effective method to develop speaking skills, provided that it is carefully structured and facilitated. These findings offer useful insights for language educators seeking to implement learner-centered strategies in speaking classes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Inquiry-Based Learning approach in teaching expository writing at the secondary school level. A quantitative method was employed, utilizing a pre-experimental design that involved administering pre-tests and post-tests. Student essay scores obtained from pre- and post-tests were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in writing ability, reflected in a Z-score of -4.534 and a significance level of 0.005 (p < 0.01), indicating that the Inquiry-Based Learning approach had a statistically significant impact on writing achievement. This approach has been demonstrated to promote active student engagement in exploration, problem-solving, and reflection, which significantly contributes to the enhancement of writing quality, particularly in terms of argumentation, coherence, and logical structure. These results affirm the pedagogical value of Inquiry-Based Learning in developing academic literacy skills, particularly in expository writing.

Abstract

Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher concludes that the students made errors in the pronunciation of the words containing silent letters. After analyzing all the data obtained, the researcher found word types of error made by students in Culinary 2 of SMKN 6 MAKASSAR in pre-systematic errors and systematic errors. The dominant type of student pronunciation error is a pre-systematic error. when the researcher analyzed the students' errors directly, the fact is that they did not realize their errors at all. Moreover, the students were not fully aware of evaluating and correcting their pronunciation. It can be concluded, that in pre-systematic errors, the students were at the stage of random guessing where they were vaguely aware of the rules. The students were unaware of some rules because they had no guidance about words in silent letters. Students themselves cannot explain how the error occurred. They could not correct it in silent letters even though the researcher pointed it out. Besides, in the systematic error, the students are familiar with silent letter words but they do not know when or how to apply them in a sentence. The students do not know the silent letter rule in pronunciation, and how to pronounce the words in the silent letters.
