Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The exchange rate is one of the  farmer welfare measuremets in Indonesia. The subsistence exchange rate refers to  a measurement of farmer welfare in terms of gross income from rice farming relative to production costs and household consumption costs. The purposes of this study are  to analyze rice farming income and  the composition of the subsistence exchange rate (NTS) of rice farmers. The research was conducted in Gunung Sugih Village, Kedondong District, Pesawaran Regency from September 2024 to April 2025. The research sample consisted of 65 paddy field farmers. Farming analysis was used to analyze farming income and the subsistence exchange rate (NTS) utilized to analyze the decomposition of the NTS of paddy field farmers. The results show that rice farming income is  economically profitable. Farmers with larger land areas have a higher Subsistence Exchange Rate (NTS) than small-scale farmers, both in terms of main consumption components including  food and fuel, as well as other welfare components such as education, health, clothing, and other household needs. In addition, farmers with large land areas are also attend to allocate a larger proportion of their NTS to productive inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, indicating a more commercial orientation and higher investment capacity. This condition reflects the positive influence of land scale on production efficiency, income, and farmer welfare. Therefore, policies need to be focus on strengthening access to land, capital, and agricultural technology extension to improve  the efficiency of smallholder farmers business , the subsistence exchange value, and welfare of rice farmers.   Key words:   exchange rate, farmer, income, subsistem, welfare

Abstract

The expansion of oil palm in Indonesia increasingly occurs at the expense of traditional perennial crops such as coffee, reshaping land systems and livelihoods. This study analyzed coffee to oil palm conversion in Way Kanan Regency, Lampung Province, from 2018 to 2024 through GIS-based classification, satellite imagery, and field validation. Results revealed a sharp decline in forest cover of around 63% during those periods and the dominance of agricultural lands (197,000 ha), driven primarily by oil palm expansion. Results showed that in Kasui, coffee agroforestry followed a boom and bust trajectory with a 59% increase, but was later displaced by oil palm, which surged by 52%. Results indicated that in Rebang Tangkas, coffee maintained a modest presence with a 36% increase, while oil palm expanded aggressively by 329%, underscoring its dominant role in reshaping land use dynamics. Conversion patterns were amplified by topography and accessibility, with oil palm concentrated in lowlands and coffee surviving in uplands. Institutional frameworks and economic incentives reinforced oil palm dominance, while rising coffee prices have triggered localized reconversion. These findings highlight a dual transition: oil palm consolidation in accessible lowlands and the persistence of coffee agroforestry in upland niches. The study underscores the urgency of place-based governance to reconcile economic drivers with ecological sustainability and rural livelihood resilience.

Abstract

The Anemia is a global health issue affecting many individuals worldwide. Traditional anemia detection through invasive blood testing is often costly, time-consuming, and requires trained medical personnel. This study developed a non-invasive anemia detection system based on Photoplethysmography (PPG) technology and fuzzy logic to estimate hemoglobin (Hb) levels and classify the degree of anemia. The system uses a PPG sensor to measure red and infrared light intensities, which are used to calculate the ratio and estimate the hemoglobin levels. The fuzzy logic system then classifies the estimated Hb results into the categories of Severe Anemia, Moderate Anemia, and Mild Anemia. The results of the study indicate that this system provides an estimated hemoglobin level with an accuracy of 92.1%, and can classify anemia degrees with results comparable to conventional blood testing. This system offers a more practical, efficient, and non-invasive alternative for anemia detection and has the potential to be used for self-health monitoring.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a chronic inflammatory and infectious disease of the middle ear or mastoid cavity that can result in the loss of bodily functions or even death. The higher concentration of CSOM is found in developing nations such as Indonesia, where the population cannot afford treatment. In cases of persistent otorrhea following 3 weeks of treatment with topical ear antibiotics, oral antibiotics may be considered as a second line of treatment. Topical ear antibiotics are insufficiently available at healthcare facilities because they are not included in the Indonesian National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM).Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare the cost-effectiveness of topical ear antibiotics versus oral antibiotics in the treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM).Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study using retrospective data from medical records and cost assessments at a rural hospital in the Gowa district of South Sulawesi. The effectiveness of the treatments was evaluated based on the frequency of visits to the ENT department, with antibiotic prescriptions and positive otorrhea. Results: The findings revealed that the Average Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ACER) for topical ear antibiotics was Rp 161,020, while the ACER for oral antibiotics was Rp 286,968. The Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) was determined to be Rp 351, and the Incremental Net Benefit (INB) was positive (Rp 99,857) at threshold Rp 434,500.Conclusion: Our study found that topical ear antibiotics were more cost-effective than oral antibiotics when considering the INB values based on INA-CBGs, along with fluctuations in cost-effectiveness using sensitivity analysis.

Abstract

The Household Farmer's Exchange Rate (NTPRP) is an indicator of farmer welfare in Indonesia. Farmers' purchasing power can be predicted through the NTPRP. The problem faced by farmers is low income, caused by farmers' expenditures on production inputs not being commensurate with their farm income. Furthermore, low income means that farmers' purchasing power for household consumption is insufficient to meet their basic needs. This study aims to analyze the income of farmer households, the level of farmer welfare with the NTPRP, and the determinants of farmer welfare. This study used a survey of 168 rice farmers in Lampung Province who were selected by random sampling. Lampung Province was chosen purposively as one of the fifth largest rice producers in Indonesia. The research was conducted from February to May 2025. This study used an analysis of farmer household income, cost analysis, and binary logit analysis. The results showed that the income of farmer households derived from rice on-farm contributed significantly to the household income of farmers, and the level of welfare based on the net total revenue to total cost of production of farmers in a less prosperous condition. The determinants of farmer welfare showed that rice farming income and off-farm income were positive and significant to farmer welfare, while food consumption expenditure was negative and significantly affected the welfare of rice farmer households in Lampung Province. The results of this study recommend that farmers diversify their income with the support of the agro-industry in rural areas, ease of access to modern technology, and the government needs to provide superior seeds, fertilizers, mini-mechanization, and sustainable intensification through farmer development and institutions.
