Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum care in the hospital was very short, while the breastfeeding period was very long. On returning home, mother need the closest, affordable and ongoing supporting of trained neighbors for exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months. This study aimed to examine the effect of accompaniment by trained peer neighbor (ATPN) on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) duration and prevalence. Methods: The experimental quasi-design was used to compare duration of EBF in the intervention group (n=49) and the control group (n=49). The intervention group received ATPN by scheduled home visits 15 times with providing informational and practical support. The control group received the postpartum care-standard. Duration of EBF was measured weekly to 24th week postpartum. Survival analysis was used to compare duration of EBF between groups. A Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios for cessation of EBF. Results: The intervention increases the duration of EBF. Median duration of EBF in the intervention and control group were 21.63 weeks and 15.85 weeks respectively (p0.001).  The prevalence of EBF at 12, 20, 24 weeks for the intervention versus control groups were (93.8% vs 69.3 %) (79.5% vs 44.8%), (59.1% vs 12.2%) respectively. Mothers in the control group were four times more likely to cessation EBF each of time than were mothers in the intervention group (HR 4.24; 95% CI: 2.56, 6.99). Conclusion: The ATPN effectively increases exclusive breastfeeding duration. It was easy to implement at a lower cost, sustainable, and effective.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period that experiences many changes in hormonal, physical, psychological, and social aspects. If not controlled properly, these changes can lead to mental disorders in adolescents. This study aims to explore the relationship between social support and adolescent mental health through literature review. The review analyzed articles sourced from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect as a database with a range of publications between 2012-2022 using the keywords mental health, social support, and adolescents. There were 13 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The result showed that adolescents' mental health is largely determined by the social support surrounding them. Adolescents who lack social support from their families, teachers, and peers will result in bad effects of their mental health. The social support of the nuclear family, especially parents, played a very important role in adolescent mental health. In addition, the factor of the history of adolescents also needed to be considered as a risk factor. Therefore, there is a need for interventions in understanding social support to families, teachers, and adolescents, as well as further research in this topic.

Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a significant global health issue, leading to higher rates of infant and child morbidity and mortality. In 2022, Indonesia had a 12.58% rate, while in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, the rate was higher at 16.30%. The Covid-19 pandemic, which severely impacted East Kalimantan also influenced LBW rates. Objectives: Analyzed the determinants of LBW incidence during the Covid-19 pandemic in Kutai Kartanegara. Methods: This population of 1265 mothers delivered in four public health centers with the highest cases of BBLR. This study used a case control design for 240 mothers, including 120 mothers who gave birth to babies with low birth weight and 120 mothers who gave birth to babies with LBW. Data were obtained from e-cohort data according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection occurred from August until October 2022 through interviews with structured questionnaires and maternal child handbooks. Data analysis was performed with logistic regression. Results: Determinant factors LBW were maternal nutritional risk (upper arm circumference <23.5 cm) (OR=2.800, 95% CI=1.237-6.340), history of anemia (OR=3.156, 95% CI=1.716-5.804), history of Covid-19 (OR=4.357, 95% CI=2.355-8.063), living with a smoker (OR=2.505, 95% CI=1.716-2.804), and not having health insurance (OR=2.744, 95% CI=1.435-5.247). Conclusions: Internal factors such as age, under arm circumference, anemia, Covid-19, birth spacing, and parity and external factors (such as living with smokers, not having insurance) were interconnected in contributing to the risk of LBW, the pandemic further influenced these determinant factors.

Abstract

Introduction: Although it has proven to be helpful, the attendance of pregnant mothers in Antenatal Classes (AC) was still low, so an ineffective breakthrough application of AC was needed according to the mother's wishes and interests. Objective: The study aimed to compare various models of practical AC for pregnant mothers to improve behavior prevention of high-risk pregnancies.Method: This study is quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group and pre-posttest design. The population of all pregnant mothers in Semarang City, with 181 samples, was divided into three groups (Extended, Virtual and Conventional). Measurements were carried out four times to see the mean score increasing, and the results of the last measurement were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test to compare the effectiveness of these three groups. Results: There was an increase in the mean value of all dimensions of the behavior of high-risk prevention based on its measurement stages. The extended model has the highest improvement, followed by the Virtual model. Statistically, there was a better chance in all behavioral dimensions after the intervention. There were differences in all dimensions of maternal behavior between the extended and the conventional model. In contrast, only knowledge and practice differed in the virtual model but not in attitudes, beliefs, and intentions. Conclusion: Extended and virtual models of AC effectively improved high-risk prevention behaviors better than conventional models. Although the increase was not as high as the extended model, the virtual model has an excellent opportunity to be developed as a strategy to overcome time constraints for mothers and health providers.
