Abstract

The increasing prevalence of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) demands healing approaches that are not only clinically effective but also provide deeper spiritual meaning. Modern psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, and gratitude interventions, have shown significant impact on improving mental health. However, these approaches are often considered limited due to their secular orientation and insufficient engagement with the transcendental dimension of human experience. This study aims to comparatively analyze the concept of gratitude as developed by Robert A. Emmons and the concept of syukur according to Syekh Ihsan Jampes, as well as to evaluate their potential integration within a holistic framework for mental disorder treatment. This research employs a qualitative approach through a literature study, drawing upon Emmons’ work (Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier), Ihsan Jampes’ Sirāj al-Ṭālibīn, the Qur’an, Hadith, literature on positive psychology, and recent empirical studies. Content analysis and comparative methods were applied to examine the definitions, dimensions, similarities, and differences of the two concepts. The findings indicate that, first, gratitude and syukur both function as healing mechanisms by reducing stress, depression, and anxiety. Second, both enhance subjective well-being, sleep quality, prosocial behavior, and emotional resilience. Third, the main difference lies in their orientation: gratitude is rooted in an empirical-secular approach, while shukr is grounded in a theological-transcendental perspective. Fourth, their integration has the potential to create a comprehensive psycho-spiritual therapy that is clinically effective while also strengthening faith, morality, and meaning in contemporary life.

Abstract

The contemporary global mental health crisis—marked by rising rates of depression, chronic stress, and social disconnection—calls for approaches that integrate biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of human well-being. This study revisits the biopsychological framework of Abū Zayd al-Balkhī (850–934 CE), articulated in Maṣāliḥ al-Abdān wa al-Anfus, to assess its relevance for contemporary challenges. Drawing on a qualitative literature review and comparative analysis, the research highlights how al-Balkhī’s classifications of ḥuzn (sorrow/depression), waswasah (obsessive rumination), and faza‘ (panic) bear conceptual parallels to modern diagnostic categories, while his therapeutic strategies—including cognitive reflection, behavioral regulation, spiritual devotion, and social companionship—demonstrate an integrative orientation that resonates with, but is not reducible to, contemporary therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), positive psychology, and mindfulness. The paper also underscores the epistemological and clinical challenges of adapting al-Balkhī’s framework today. These include differences in ontology and methodology, terminological disparities with DSM/ICD systems, lack of empirical validation, and the risk of decontextualization if his thought is applied without critical adaptation. Nevertheless, the study argues that al-Balkhī’s synthesis of Qur’anic theology, Greco-Arabic medicine, and philosophical rationalism offers valuable resources for developing culturally resonant and ethically grounded models of care. His legacy can enrich mental health discourse in Muslim-majority contexts and pluralistic societies alike, provided it is engaged reflexively, critically, and in dialogue with contemporary clinical evidence.

Abstract

Among the factors that can improve the quality of one's faith is the knowledge that based on the correct epistemology. In this case, the information received by the mind is inseparable from the performance of the senses as the first perceiver capable of receiving sensations from sensory objects. By using the comparative descriptive analysis method, this paper aims to determine the concept of senses according to Ibn Sina in processing knowledge and its influence on faith. The discovery in this paper is that the concept of the senses is described by Ibn Sina as perfecting the function of reason in achieving knowledge with its performance in the form of a process of receiving sensory perceptions by external senses which are channeled to the internal senses so that humans can witness and contemplate the existence of God in achieving the truth that affects the quality of faith. In this case, it can be seen that Ibn Sina's concept of senses is different from the West which makes the senses the main source of knowledge without involving revelation.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of consciousness in the thought of William James and Abu Hamid al-Ghazali through an ontological, epistemological, and teleological comparison, and explores its relevance to the psycho-spiritual experience of Muslim minority communities. Employing a qualitative philosophical-comparative method based on library research of primary and secondary texts, the study proceeds through four analytical stages: hermeneutical reading, conceptual mapping, comparative analysis, and integrative synthesis. The findings reveal that James conceives consciousness as a continuous, selective, and adaptive stream of subjective experience grounded in empirical-pragmatic epistemology, while al-Ghazali conceives it as a spiritually illuminated state of the soul (nafs) attained through tazkiyat al-nafs, muraqabah, and muhasabah, oriented toward ma'rifatullah. Despite their divergent metaphysical foundations, both thinkers affirm the transformative, ethical, and meaning-making dimensions of inner experience. This study formulates a three-axis psycho-spiritual integrative model, namely the cognitive-adaptive, spiritual-purification, and ethical-social axes, which demonstrates that James's adaptive consciousness and al-Ghazali's spiritual disciplines function as complementary resources for Muslim minority communities navigating identity negotiation, spiritual resilience, and social participation in non-Muslim majority pluralistic contexts. The model contributes to Islamic psychology and minority religious studies while offering a conceptual foundation for consciousness-based approaches to Islamic education and community empowerment.

Abstract

This article explores the philosophical and spiritual perspectives of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, focusing on his views on the nature of humanity, the spiritual and material aspects of existence, and the pursuit of happiness Al-Ghazali's philosophy is deeply rooted in Islamic thought and draws upon the Quranic and Prophetic teachings.  Al-Ghazali posits that humans are composed of both a physical, ephemeral dimension (the material aspect) and an intellectual-transcendental dimension (the spiritual aspect). The article delves into al-Ghazali's classification of existence into two realms: the realm of decrees ('ālam al-amr) and the realm of creation ('ālam al-khalq). Human beings, according to al-Ghazali, embody both of these realms, with their physicality falling under the realm of creation and their spirituality under the realm of decree. Al-Ghazali introduces various terms to describe the spiritual entity within humans, such as al-‘aql (intellect), al-nafs (soul), al-qalb (heart), and al-rūh (spirit). He argues that while the body is material and earthly, the spirit is divine in origin and immortal.  The soul, as God's creation, reflects this governance by ruling over the body without being located in any specific physical part. It emphasizes that the spirit belongs to the realm of Divine decrees, making it distinct from material entities.  Al-Ghazali identifies different qualities within the human spirit, ranging from animalistic to angelic. He argues that the angelic quality, associated with the worship of God and the pursuit of Divine Beauty, represents the true essence of humanity. To attain happiness, individuals must purify themselves from worldly desires and base instincts.  The article underscores the importance of knowledge in al-Ghazali's philosophy, with knowledge being derived from God and serving as the criterion that separates humans from other creations. Knowledge enables individuals to understand their purpose, responsibilities, and the path to happiness.  The article explores al-Ghazali's perspective on happiness, highlighting his belief that it is primarily a spiritual and intellectual state. It emphasizes the significance of attaining knowledge of God for true happiness, as well as the importance of spiritual discipline and self-purification.

Abstract

The origin of man is monotheism; acknowledging the oneness of God and serving Him. However, in its journey, was most of man forgot his monotheism and disobeyed to serve Him anymore, as a result of their misguidance and destruction. This text intended to know the concept of monotheism in al-Fatihah latter. Through the analytic pattern description, the study found several important points. First, monotheism in al-Fatihah latter was very comprehensive, because it includes monotheism of rububiyah, ulluhiyah and al-asma ’wa al-sifat. Even al-Fatihah latter does not only contain monotheism, but contained the meaning of the entire contents of the Qur'an. Second, any work that started without bismillah will be cut off and has no blessing value. Third, so that one's activities in accordance with his beliefs, a strong will is needed to make monotheism a view of his life. Worldview or one's natural views we are the principle for every human action, including scientific and technological actions. If the concept of monotheism in al-Fatihah letter with all the network of concepts contained in the Qur'an has become a view of life and underlies every activity, monotheism will guide human beings to gain salvation and happiness.

Abstract

Covid-19, which originally came from the Wuhan area, China, is an infectious disease outbreak resulting from an outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The spread of this virus can be through the air or droplets from an infected person. Prevention that has been attempted at this time is the application of health protocols, quarantine for Covid-19 patients, as well as social distancing. This manuscript seeks to explore the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 through the Islamic tradition with the figure of Ibn Sina. The method used is descriptive-analysis that focuses on literature studies with a qualitative approach that describes Covid-19. Some of the conclusions obtained are in the form of efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases at the time of Ibn Sina. First; quarantine. Quarantine is carried out for people with infectious diseases to prevent the spread of disease to healthy people. Second; good food consumption. Consumption of good food can be in the form of nutritious food as well as foods that can prevent the entry of germs in the body, such as garlic. Third; emotional processing. Emotional processing can be done by avoiding fatigue, being patient, thinking positively as well as getting enough sunlight. Fourth; al-wahm al'amil. Al-wahm al 'amil strives to build positive energy in the soul by giving positive perceptions to patients. Fifth; wash with vinegar mixed water. Vinegar water is used to kill microbes that stick to the body and clothes. These 5 efforts to prevent infectious diseases in Ibn Sina's time are very relevant to the current Covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Modernization and materialism increasingly dominate daily life, making it difficult for individuals to find spiritual and emotional balance. This study investigates Muhammad Iqbal's Khudi theory within Islamic psychology and its application to modern psychological issues, particularly OCD. Using a qualitative literature-based approach and Spradley's analytical model, including Domain Analysis, Taxonomy Analysis, Componential Analysis, and Cultural Theme Analysis, the research leads to three key conclusions. First, traditional psychological methods often fall short in addressing the existential and spiritual aspects of mental health crises, especially in disorders like OCD. Second, applying Iqbal's khudi principles-focusing on self-development, self-understanding, and spiritual growth-provides a holistic approach that effectively aids individuals in managing obsessions and compulsive behaviors. Third, incorporating khudi principles such as love, faqr, courage, tolerance, and personal honor into OCD therapy yields significant benefits. Love and personal honor enhance self-esteem and dignity, while faqr reduces reliance on rituals. Courage and tolerance enable individuals to accept imperfections, thereby decreasing anxiety and improving overall emotional and spiritual well-being.

Abstract

This paper examines the model of zikr taught by Sheikh Abdurrauf al-Singkili and its relevance as an Islamic psychotherapeutic approach to mental disorders. Through his works and the practices of the Syattariyah order, Abdurrauf al-Singkili emphasizes dhikr as a means of purifying the heart (tazkiyat al-nafs), cultivating moral character, and strengthening the soul through total surrender to Allah. Through qualitative research using documentary techniques, the researcher seeks to examine and explore the concept of dhikr from one of Indonesia's leading scholars of the 17th century, Sheikh Abdurrauf al-Singkili, who hailed from Aceh. The findings of this study indicate that Abdurrauf al-Singkili's dhikr, as an Islamic psychotherapy model based on the teachings of the Qur'an, can be used as a form of mental healing therapy. This can be understood from several aspects: first, Abdurrauf al-Singkili's zikir model is closely related to the spiritual dimension, which restores the balance of one's soul. second, It uses the tahlil formula in its practice, which theoretically involves deep faith in God, bringing inner peace to its practitioners. Third, The zikir model is highly practical and relevant for application, particularly in terms of breath control, which influences mental relaxation. Fourth, The zikir model relies on a spiritual guide (mursyid) as a director and guide in its implementation.
