Abstract

This research attempts to answer the question of why Indonesia supported democratization in Myanmar. In this research, researchers use the constructivism perspective to analyze Indonesia's foreign policy by exploring Indonesia's reasons for promoting democratization in Myanmar. This motivation becomes an interesting thing when Indonesia's reason is more of nonmaterial than material. This research uses qualitative methods by collecting data through interviews with a number of informants and documentation studies. Based on the results of data analysis, this research has found that Indonesia's foreign policy toward Myanmar in supporting democratization is based on consideration of domestic, regional and global ideas, values or norms. These norms and ideas are constructed so as to encourage the formation of an Indonesian identity which is the basis for the production and reproduction of Indonesia's interests in Myanmar in promoting democratization. Indonesia's desire to re-hold regional leadership, the restoration of its image as a democratic country, and a commitment to maintain world peace are part of the production and reproduction of discourses on Indonesia's interests which contribute to the formation of Indonesia's foreign policy towards Myanmar.

Abstract

Abstract This article aims to explain the Chinese public diplomacy towards the Taiwanese public as an effort to support one China principle. Researchers see that this one China principle is a stepping stone for China and Taiwan in establishing interactions based on the 1992 consensus. In analyzing, the researcher used the concept of Mark Leonard with the aim to find out how Chinese public diplomacy towards the Taiwanese public was in an effort to support one China principle. The research method used in this research is a qualitative method that is supported by collecting data through literature studies and also reducing the data in conducting data analysis. The results of this study indicate that Chinese public diplomacy towards Taiwan as an effort to support one China principle has gained support for this one China principle coming from the Kuomintang Party and Taiwanese businessmen based on the 1992 consensus.

Abstract

RADICALIZATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF INCLUSIVE CULTURE IN WEST JAVA, INDONESIA. The aim of the Community Engagement (PPM) research is to explain efforts to deal with radicalization so that the country is not centric in the form of inclusive cultural development. The description seeks to trace the interpretation of Jatinangor District, Sumedang Regency, West Java Province. This was motivated by the tendency to strengthen radical understanding which was observed in West Java after the Reformation era in Indonesia. Strengthening radicalization can trigger the development of a culture of intolerance, verbal and physical violence, and exclusivism that is not impossible to bring the potential for national disintegration or threat to security in Indonesia. The study attachments in this PPM are Problem-Based Learning and Community-Based Research (CBR). Especially, in constructing ideas that are relevant to efforts so that problems in the community can be faced optimally. The formation of an inclusive culture is thought to enable the openness (inclusiveness) of society, tolerance, pluralism, collaboration and cooperation to control the diversity of identities in society. PPM is a follow-up from previous research which found that efforts to deal with radicalization were still state-centric. Based on the results of the PPM, it was concluded the need for awareness-raising and societal empowerment activities on an ongoing basis to deal with radicalization.

Abstract

As a country which has attention to democracy and human rights, also has the strategic role of Indonesia in regional and international level, Indonesia has a political will to help Myanmar in continuing the survival of democracy there. Through the values which upheld ASEAN, namely the principle of non-intervention, Indonesia seeks to use constructive engagement approach, which emphasizes consensus and avoid confrontation with the inclusive spirit and persuasive attention. Indonesia’s efforts shaped positive support by promoting diplomatic role, involvement in co-operation, foreign aid presence in the investment, dialogue, and exchange of ideas related to a variety of issues. This approach is diametrically opposed to a boycott or embargo to turn Myanmar into a democratic state.
