Abstract

Coastal ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities, including urbanization, pollution, and climate change. These disturbances have led to significant biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem services. Understanding effective restoration techniques is essential for reversing these negative impacts and promoting ecological resilience. This study aims to evaluate various ecological restoration techniques applicable to coastal ecosystems affected by human activities. By assessing the effectiveness of these techniques, the research seeks to identify best practices for restoring ecological integrity and enhancing biodiversity. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on case studies of restoration projects in coastal areas. Techniques evaluated included habitat restoration, species reintroduction, and the implementation of sustainable management practices. Data on ecological outcomes, species diversity, and community structure were analyzed. Findings indicate that a combination of techniques, such as habitat restoration and community engagement, significantly enhances the recovery of coastal ecosystems. Successful case studies demonstrated improvements in biodiversity and ecosystem function, highlighting the importance of adaptive management strategies tailored to specific environmental contexts. This research underscores the critical need for effective ecological restoration techniques in coastal ecosystems impacted by human activities.

Abstract

The escalating global environmental crisis highlights the need for effective conservation models, a gap addressed by analyzing indigenous knowledge systems. This study’s objective was to investigate and analyze the ethnoforestry principles and practices of the Baduy community in Banten, Indonesia, focusing on their contribution to the sustainable conservation of forests and water resources. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were gathered in Kanekes village through in-depth interviews with customary leaders (Pu'un), participant observation, and documentation of customary laws (pikukuh). The findings reveal a sophisticated ethnoforestry system rooted in the pikukuh customary law, which strictly delineates forest zones into protected (leuweung kolot) and agricultural (huma) areas. This classification governs resource extraction and ensures the preservation of core ecosystem functions. Crucially, water management is intrinsically linked to forest protection, preserving the Ciujung watershed’s quality. The novelty lies in empirically documenting this successful indigenous system. The implication is that the Baduy’s integration of spiritual beliefs with ecological principles offers a proven, replicable model for sustainable development, underscoring the vital importance of incorporating local wisdom into contemporary environmental governance and policy-making.

Abstract

challenges in effectively engaging the public and catalysing behavioural change, particularly regarding pervasive issues like urban waste. Environmental theatre, an arts-based approach that uses performance to communicate ecological themes, offers an alternative pedagogical tool that can foster deeper cognitive and emotional connections to environmental problems. Purpose. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of environmental theatre as a dual-purpose platform for enhancing public ecological awareness and mobilizing community action on urban waste management. Method. A qualitative case study methodology was employed, focusing on a series of public theatre performances addressing plastic waste in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were gathered through participant observation, post-performance semi-structured interviews with audience members (n=45), and a focus group discussion with the theatre troupe. A thematic analysis was used to identify key outcomes and audience responses. Results. The findings indicate that the immersive and narrative-based format of the theatre performances significantly increased audience members' emotional engagement with and intellectual understanding of the urban waste crisis. A substantial majority of interviewees (over 85%) reported a heightened sense of personal responsibility and expressed a stronger intention to adopt pro-environmental behaviours, such as waste segregation and reducing consumption. Environmental theatre serves as a highly effective and potent medium for both environmental education and social mobilization. Conclusion. By moving beyond simple information dissemination to create an embodied, affective experience, it successfully fosters the critical consciousness and motivational impetus required to translate awareness into tangible individual and collective action.

Abstract

The Kuta Ciamis Traditional Village is one of the Sundanese indigenous communities that still preserves its ancestral heritage. The existence of the Kuta Traditional Village to this day is inseparable from the combination of natural beauty, traditional cultural heritage, and mystical aura maintained by the local residents from generation to generation. Located on the border of West Java and Central Java, the uniqueness and local wisdom found in Kuta Village are the main elements in forming a strong and attractive branding for tourists. This study aims to determine and explain how the branding process of Kuta Traditional Village as one of the cultural tourism destinations based on local wisdom in West Java was formed. The research method was carried out qualitatively by collecting data through observations about the lives of indigenous residents and the existence of traditional institutions, interviews with traditional leaders and literature studies from documents, books, journals and other relevant references about indigenous communities. The results of the study indicate that the branding of the "Sacred Cultural Village" in Kuta Traditional Village is reflected in the local cultural identity and traditional symbols communicated to the public interpersonally and through the media. The conclusion of the study shows that the formation of cultural tourism branding is a marketing communication strategy for tourism destinations based on local wisdom in West Java which can strengthen community participation in preserving local cultural identity values and increasing visibility, interest, and tourist visits.

Abstract

Background: The value of environmental awareness in rural communities has increased in recent years, particularly in areas where traditional customs intersect with contemporary ecological concerns. It is evident in the Indonesian village of Cisayong, located in southern West Java. Purpose: This article employed Giddens’ framework to show how civil society promoted environmental awareness in the village. Methods: This research was conducted through observation, FGDs, and in-depth interviews with local leaders in Cisayong Village. Results: The research indicated that civil society emerges from community, religious, and youth leaders who collectively embrace the environment. Moreover, each of these civil societies has effectively communicated messages about environmental awareness and garnered recognition from the village government for their efforts. Conclusion: The village community exhibits distinctive socio-cultural and economic characteristics that limit its ability to address environmental challenges effectively. However, through the initiative of local leaders, these limitations have become opportunities for developing community-based environmental awareness rooted in religion and culture. Implication: This finding suggested the empowerment of local actors as agents of change to build environmentally conscious social structures. Strengthening these initiatives can improve long-term environmental resilience in similar rural contexts.

Abstract

Communication networks and systems in rural areas often experience obstacles, especially during times of crisis due to disasters due to infrastructure damage and other disruptions that result in limited communication and information channels. This study aims to reveal how community radio contributes to the communication resilience system in facing crises in rural areas. The community radio referred to in this study is the RaSi FM Community Radio in Cisewu Village, Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia. This research is a qualitative study using a case study approach. Researchers obtained data through in-depth interviews involving community radio managers and local residents and participant observation. The data analyzed included interview results, broadcast content, and other data deemed relevant to the study. The research findings indicate that community radio can function as an alternative communication channel that can replace other communication tools that experience obstacles and disruptions such as internet connections, telecommunication network interruptions, especially during crises such as natural disasters. Community radio provides verifiable information about the current conditions for both the surrounding community and those still within the limited service coverage area. In addition to the information provided, the presence of community radio encourages social coordination within the community and produces a collective response to various potential risks that may arise. These findings suggest that redundancy through community media can strengthen communication resilience in rural crisis systems.
