Abstract

Weed control in dry land cane cultivation is usually done chemically with the pre-emergence herbicides spraying since planting until to one week and post-emergence for about 2.5 months. Pre-emergence herbicides are usually used to control weeds when planting until to 2 month periode and 2.5 months post-emergence herbicides to prepare a second fertilization so that sugar cane growth is not disturbed by weeds. The treatment consisted of: ametrine 80 % herbicide at doses of 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0; and 2.4 kg / ha, ametrine 1.6 kg/ha+2,4-D 865g l/ha,ametrine 1.6 kg/ha + metil metsulfuron 8 g/ha, 2 times manual weeding treatment, and control. The experimental design used was randomized block design with 4 replications. The results showed that the herbicides ametrine and ametrine + 2,4-D or metsulfuron methyl were able to suppress the total weeds growth in the cultivation of dry land sugarcane. Ametrine and ametrine + 2,4-D or metsulfuron methyl all doses are able to suppress weeds Borreria alata, Rhicardia brasiliensis, and Digitaria longifolia; except at doses of ametrine 0.8 and 1.2 kg/ha against Borreria alata at 8 and 12 weeks after application. Whereas weeds that are not controlled with all treatments, namely Brachiaria sp., Cyperus rotundus, and Cleome rutidosperma. The growth of plant cane is not suppressed by the treatment of herbicide ametrine and ametrine + 2,4-D or metsulfuron  methyl and as well as manual weeding. The treatment of herbicide ametrine and ametrine + 2,4-D or metsulfuron methyl does not cause toxic in plant cane cultivation. Keywords: Ametrine, 2,4-D, metsulfuron methy, plant cane, weeds.

Abstract

Conventional agricultural practices are very intensively utilizing synthetic agrochemicals. The resulting impact is a decrease in soil quality, thereby reducing fertilizer efficiency and plant yield. Efforts to maintain soil health include restoring organic matter. Organic fertilizers can be produced by utilizing the surrounding agricultural waste. Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) can be produced from organic waste which should be chosen from high content of macro nutient. The quality of LOF could be increased by adding commercial decomposer starter or local microorganism. Organic matter of high energy should be added as well. The process of making liquid organic fertilizer is involved a fermentation process. Microbes will decompose organic material by breaking down the nutrients in the material to dissolve in solution. POC applications have been tested on various agricultural commodities. The provision of POC can increase the growth and yield of plants. In addition, the use of POC can improve soil health. Keywords : fermentation, fruit, industry, microbe, LOF, pulp, quality, vegetable, waste

Abstract

Shade trees provide ecological benefits such as soil conservation, biodiversity conservation, and providing nutrient through litter fall and nitrogen fixation by legume trees. Therefore, shade tree is a key factor for sustainability coffee production. To evaluate productivity and sustainability of coffee agroecosystems a study was conducted at Sumberjaya Sub-district, West Lampung, Indonesia, during 2007-2010. Farmers were interviewed and two plots of Coffea canephora were set. Plot I was a long term experimental plot, established from shrub to young coffee agro-ecosystems with treatments of open-grown (sun) coffee and Gliricidae sepium, Erythrina indica and Michelia champaca shaded-grown coffee. Plot II was mature coffee fields of 15 years old with the same types of shade trees. The results showed that tipe of coffee agro-ecosystems determined productivity which legume-shaded coffee were higher than nonlegume-shade coffee or sun coffee. Based on the value of Sustainable Yield Index, Benefit Cost Ratio, Net Present Value, and Internal Rate of Return, Gliricidae sepium and Erythrina indica shaded coffee were more visible therefore more sustainable than 2 others coffee agro-ecosystems. Based on the survey and experimental plot, productivity of coffee agro-ecosystems of 3-26 yeras old showed two maximum points resulted in a regression of polinomial model. Key words: coffee, shade tree, productivity, sustainability

Abstract

Palm sugar is made from nira, the palm tree extraction. There are fewer palm trees and sugar craftsmen often feel difficulty getting palm sugar raw materials. This study aims to analyze the nira procurement and estimate the income and added value of palm sugar processing in Air Kubang Village, Air Naningan, Tanggamus Regency. There are four palm sugar craftsmen in total at the research location. The four of them become respondents for the interview in November-December 2021. This study used descriptive quantitative and Hayami value-added methods. The results revealed that nira was taken from sugar palm plants that grew naturally. Aside from that, there was no intensive cultivation of the plant even though the nira water is increasingly limited. Every day, two trees are tapped, producing 24.16 liters. The income of palm sugar craftsmen in Air Kubang Village is Rp55,620.00/day or Rp1,668,600.00/month. Palm sugar processing has an added value ratio of 57.03% or Rp1,560.69/liter of nira water.

Abstract

Abstract

Biochar is a carbon-rich solid produced from the pyrolysis of biomass such as wood, manure, and leaves under high temperature and low oxygen conditions which is used for agricultural applications as a soil amendment. This paper reviews the utilization and practical application of biochar. The application of biochar into the soil can improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil, namely increasing porosity, water holding capacity, soil aggregation, increasing pH, cation exchange capacity, soil organic carbon, nutrient retention and availability, and increasing microbial life, meso and soil macrofauna. Aside from being a soil amendment, biochar has a function on issues of global warming, climate change, and the environment, namely its role in carbon sequestration and stabilization, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil pollutant remediation. If biochar is applied properly, namely using the right feedstock materials, method of manufacture, dosage, method of application, and place, it will affect agronomic performance and crop yields. Reduced yields are mostly occured in temperate climates as biochar significantly increases soil pH causing an effect of excessive liming resulting in immobilization of key nutrients such as Mg, Fe, B, and P. Biochar needs to be mixed or applied together with fertilizer ingredients such as chemical fertilizers, bio-fertilizers, compost, and manure. Another effort is to enrich biochar with those materials so that biochar is categorized as a biochar-based fertilizer that has a higher selling price. Key words : Application, biochar, benefit, method, crop yield
